or were they being total 'jobsworth' meltdown in Ikea

So bit of a long one but... I applied for the ikea finance thingy, it's no interest so seemed good. Got the virtual card - its like a bank card, and on the website it said you had to show it at the till and then they would key in the numbers. So went on Fri eve, took about 3 hours to do all the shopping, mainly a bed, but you know what it's like there. Got to the till, and the guy said I had to have the app. What app? Ikea finance app, he said. So there I was trying to download this app at the till with people queueing behind me. When it finally downwloaded it said I couldnt use it as it needed 14+ update.

So then a 'manager' came over and said I could "do it" online. So she directed me to this website for the finance company. But I couldnt log in as it said I needed a family card number, but I don't have a family card.

She suggested I go over to the doors to get better reception on wifi. I said it wasnt the wifi that was the problem!

I then tried to login in the ikea finance website, but for some reason my phone kept doing the 'circle of doom'. - When I got home I tried it again, and it still did it, only conclusion is that my phone isn't new enough.

So I begged her, to let me use the card. She said no as she "didnt know it was me". So I had to just leave all the stuff and go home.

So back again on Saturday. I tried logging in on my laptop, which is how I applied for the loan and it worked perfectly. So I rang customer service, and said could I show my laptop at the till, no problem.

When I got there to be sure, I found a manager at the till, and explained the problem. I said I didnt want to do all my shopping and then get to the till and the same thing happened, so could I show her beforehand. OK she said. So I pulled out the laptop but couldnt login!!!!!!!!! I think it was the ikea wifi wasnt strong enough. So I went away and was able to connect using my mobile hotspot. Went back and tried to find her but she kept moving away and chatting to her colleagues and ignoring me. In the end after about 15 mins of me standing there trying to get her attention I went up and said 'excuse me' and tried explaining again. I showed her how I had logged in, and she could see the card etc. But... she said the rule was I had to show it at the till when I got there. I said but what if my laptop plays up and I cant get logged in, you've seen it now, cant you say that I can definitely use it? No, she said. I said that it didn't say anything about that on their website, and shouldnt it be a bit clearer. She said no, it was very clear, and nobody else had ever had a problem. It was getting a bit heated now, well I was getting upset. I asked her a few more times but she wouldnt budge. I jsut burst out crying, I was just at the end of my tether. I felt like screaming at the bloody mindedness of the whole thing. Eventually another manager came over, and he took me to a seat, and he phoned another manager, and then another manager, and eventually they said ok, they had seen me login, and "knew it was me", and if I did my shopping I would be able to use the card.

I'm still upset, stupid I know. I'm thinking as well is this just discrimination against people who don't have top of the range phones? I mean my phone works perfect for everything, just not this for some reason. It's a 12 update I think. So it's not ancient or anything. Surely they need to have some flexibility if the technology is not working?

Thanks for reading if you've gotten this far. I honestly don't know what I could have done different...?? I've tried to contact the bank they set up, Ikano , but impossible to get a response...

@Annoyedanddissapointed

Argument about enviroment is bit nonsensical on this thread when someone was having hissy fit over not being able to buy some random stuff in Ikea on credit... (Bed excepted)
I agree, but companies are pushing us to do this. That means upgrading our phones.

You have no idea what else they were buying - so it’s not “nonsensical “. And hissy fit? Give over with your snark.

@MaMelon rug is such a life must have as well.

And yeah. It's a hissy fit imo

MaMelon · 30/08/2021 10:08

Rug?? You still don’t know what she bought.

If any company needs its customers to throw away their old phone and buy a new one in order to use their financial services then they can’t claim eco points. If that same company’s public WiFi is so shit that a customer has to use their hotspot on their laptop then it’s probably quite likely that customer is going to be a bit fed up. If that same company offers credit then it should be there to be used by everyone.

RightYesButNo · 30/08/2021 10:13

@Ceci03 Here’s how you return your your rug. It’s on the finance website.

Here’s the return policy:
www.ikea.com/gb/en/customer-service/returns-claims/return-policy/

In order to avoid issues though, I would return it during the “lifetime” of the loan, since the money will be returned directly to the loan.

Ceci03 · 30/08/2021 11:28

@RightYesButNo yes I also read that to on the website but it doesn’t say anything about the app? Do I need it to return the item would you say? Bit unclear?

Also my dd phone is older than mine so it wouldn’t help me!

And god forbid a poor person buys a luxury item such as a rug. Should they not be saving money and surviving on bread and water. Is a bed even an essential item. Dad has been sleeping on the floor on a mattress the last 18mths so prob not essential.

Does the app only apply to a range of items Ikea have deemed to be essential? Or perhaps an organisation like Shelter could step in here and issue a decree setting out which items can be bought on credit - that might work Hmm

RightYesButNo · 30/08/2021 11:59

@Ceci03 I would say that since it says “in line with our refunds policy” and the refunds policy doesn’t say that you have to have the method of payment with you, only proof of the purchase, which is the receipt, and that the money will be returned the same way you paid. I would check your receipt and it just says “Loan” or something, then maybe you would need the app. If it has the full loan number for reference, then the return shouldn’t be an issue. But you can call IKEA if you want and say, “I want to return something I bought with an Ikano loan. Can I do that with only my receipt?”

If you want a refund, yes return it. Is there a smaller one you can exchange it for?
From the screenshot, it looks straightforward.

@Clymene
Here you go: second-handphones.com/motorola-moto-e-xt1524-2nd-gen-black-white-unlocked-fully-tested-working

And @gofg - I do very much have a clue. I have lived without being able to get any credit so saving was the only way I could get 'big' items. I've sat in the dark because I've not had 50p to put in the electric meter. So I do very much know what it's like to have fuck all

I honestly appreciate the link, I've had a super quick look but will have to go back later properly.

One thing that stands out is that this phone runs Android version 5, which according to google along with versions 6&7 are both no longer being supported as of last year.

I am not familiar with Android and I'm not trying to be goady, it's possible I've just got it wrong but basically apps wouldn't work on this £40 phone either.

Is there actually such a thing as a "cheap" phone that would work with the apps then I wonder?

WhoIsPepeSilva · 30/08/2021 14:12

The crab bucket mentality here is impressive for what it's worth.

I do feel for you OP, when you've been having a rough time of it technical issues are the last thing you need.

Clymene · 30/08/2021 14:19

@WhoIsPepeSilva - sorry I must have got the model wrong and DS Is out so can't check.

But quick google gives me this one - £40 from Argos, brand new, runs latest version of Android

I don’t understand this really. But if shops want people to buy things they should make it easy to pay, not hard. If I’d spent 3 hours in a store then couldn’t buy what I wanted because of this kind of shite I wouldn’t go back the next day - I’d never go back. Shop somewhere else in future. I certainly won’t rush to IKEA after reading this. I’m not surprised you’re livid.

MadKittenWoman · 30/08/2021 18:18

I have an 11+ pro and have everything up-to-date so I don’t think you have the 12 as that is the current model until next month.
@Ceci03, for it to be discrimination it needs to be based on a protected characteristic. What is your protected characteristic that makes it discrimination?
For goodness sake, what is it with some people?! You are just making yourself look silly. It only needs to be relevant to a “protected characteristic” if the affected person is intending to take legal action. It is perfectly possible to discriminate for countless reasons as another poster has pointed out

Miisty · 30/08/2021 18:28

Ikeas customer service is rubbish Bought some glassware pots with lids Found lids did not fit emailed themNo reply (Over 50mes from nearest store)Also bought stuff there and the till person charged me for the persons in front shopping Watch out

Ceci03 · 30/08/2021 18:33

I know I really didn’t want to go back @DonaPatrizia but my dd had picked out this bed wit storage she wanted and she already had an Ikea mattress which I don’t fit standard beds they r a diff size. But yeah I won’t be sorry if I never go back. There is the problem of the rug tho . I can’t find out if I need the app to return it and don’t want to make the journey if they are going to refuse a refund til I login to the app
