And it's not after a relative, she just likes it. Is this it for us over 40s? Are there going to be loads of little Lynns and Sharons running round soon?

What other names are we about to see!?

OP posts:
PollyValent · 29/08/2021 13:50

I think Claire is a pretty name.

Janet seems safe from revival however I always think how glam Janette from Strictly is and start to wonder !

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 29/08/2021 13:57

I'm an 80s baby with a name that was definitely more of a 50s/ 60s name. When I was a child I never met any other children with my name. I suspect it may have a resurgence soon though. Hated it as a kid but am ok with it now.

everyone my age seems to be called Laura, Sam, Rebecca, Emma, Sarah/Sara, Rachel or Jess.

PaolaDiLorenzo · 29/08/2021 13:59

My name has been mentioned twice,I was born in the seventies but given a 1940's name. I have never met anybody my age called it, they have always been at least thirty years older.

Yesitsbess · 29/08/2021 14:02

@janj2301

I think I'm safe with Janet, had SEVEN in my year at school, not met any that weren't born in the early 50s (I will be corrected here though!!)
ALL of my chickens are named Janet. All of them! Because they are all identical and I'm a fan of a TV show called 'The Good Place'

So Janet may be on the list for a return...

Thatsplentyjack · 29/08/2021 14:06

Apparently no one has named their baby Gary in years. I say bring back Gary.

notanothertakeaway · 29/08/2021 14:07

Sandra

Yesitsbess · 29/08/2021 14:07

Gary is an endangered name. We have one in the family. And I named the cat Gary to keep the flame alive.

VienneseWhirligig · 29/08/2021 14:08

I know a baby Brian, and a baby Julie. First time I've heard those names for little ones for years!

Toddlerteaplease · 29/08/2021 14:09

@x2boys

Some names should never make a comeback imo, imagine giving birth to a beautiful baby boy and lovingly calling them Derek.
I met one recently called Dennis.
elbea · 29/08/2021 14:09

@Laska2Meryls My one year old is called Elspeth Grin

Octopus37 · 29/08/2021 14:13

Sue's a bit more timeless I think, I'm a Sue (Suzanne) and I've met kids Grandma's called Sue. Would love Carol to make a come back, that was my Mum's name, didn't have any girls so though so couldn't use it. Also have Rebecca in our family (70s though not 80s). Agree that Rebecca and Laura are timeless. Would love to see Lorraine, Elaine and Julie come back. Agree about Derek, not just cause its my Uncle's name and I dont really like him.

DappledThings · 29/08/2021 14:13

I'm awaiting babies called Carol, Susan, Richard and Simon

That's me (if you add 3 letters), MIL, FIL and DH!

DS (5) has two middle names, one is Richard and one is one of the ones that has already had a resurgence from the generation or so that pre-dates FIL (like Stanley or Albert but not those). DD (3) has Jean as a middle name after 2/4 great-grandmothers. Would have liked it as a first name too.

My school year was children born in 78 and 79. At secondary 9 out of about 100 girls were called Emma and 5 were Caroline.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 29/08/2021 14:16

Mid 80s baby here, literally every second girl I went to school with was Joanna/Joanne, Jennifer, Sarah, Laura or Lisa
Most common boys names were David, Matthew and Daniel.

VaguelyInteresting · 29/08/2021 14:23

Oh please god none of the 80s classics.

I have a “classic 80s” name and bloody hate it. It doesn’t suit me and when I tell people they don’t disagree. “No,” they say, you’re definitely not a “Waynetta*”

My bloody mother only called me it because HER mother hated it. My mother being 17 when I was born ofc named me so in spite, so I suppose a family legacy of a sort.

Sigh.

duckduckswan · 29/08/2021 14:33

Claire/Clare
John

duckduckswan · 29/08/2021 14:35

I’m married to a John, have a brother called John. Introduced to a 5 yr old called John last week and it just felt odd

Rubyupbeat · 29/08/2021 14:38

I love the name Donna, hope that makes a comeback.

teraculum29 · 29/08/2021 14:40

@PasstheBucket89

oh dear, I'm a late 80s baby I wonder when Rebecca, Amy and Laura will be making comebacks x
In my DD's class there are 2Amy's, they are 6year old.
lunkitsmum · 29/08/2021 14:42

Almost every woman my generation from uk born late 70s early 80s I know has the middle name Louise, all the others were Marie.

Yesitsbess · 29/08/2021 14:46

@lunkitsmum oh my word you are right!

SundayTwizzle · 29/08/2021 14:47

Clare was on my list for 2 week old Dd but we went with something else, I love it though!

LouiseMarie80s · 29/08/2021 14:49

I've name changed just to share that I was born in the early 80s and my name is Louise Marie. I never realised how dated my name is until now Grin
TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/08/2021 14:50

I think Clare and Anna are beautiful names, would happily see them in greater circulation again.

I can't get worked up about Joanne - Jo or JoJo for short.

Mammyloveswine · 29/08/2021 14:50

@WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly

My kids think Linda and Sylvia are nice names for their future children
Ha I have relatives in their 70s called these names and they just sound old!

I suppose it's like little baby Martha's, and Evelyns and Alfie's! I love them but my mam thinks they are "old biddy names" Grin

ThePlumVan · 29/08/2021 14:52

A name is just a name is just a name !

A new hip name is no different from an 80’s name, it’s just the connections you are making with a particular place in time. It’s neither modern nor old fashioned !

I met a Nell at a restaurant the other day - she was nearly one.
Really want to meet a baby Beryl now you’ve mentioned it.
