And it's not after a relative, she just likes it. Is this it for us over 40s? Are there going to be loads of little Lynns and Sharons running round soon?

What other names are we about to see!?

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 30/08/2021 07:46

@Yesitsbess - Carl is about 8 now

Treezan82 · 30/08/2021 07:53

Rebecca is timeless. Like Emma and Sophie.

Names I can see coming back next generation or one after: Lisa, Michelle, Sarah, Laura, Claire, Louise, Christine, Kelly, Hayley, Nicola

Yesitsbess · 30/08/2021 07:53

Still reasonably tiny!

Can anyone beat 8 for a Carl?

Roll up roll up!

Treezan82 · 30/08/2021 07:58

I guess it'll be people born in the 40s and 50s who will see their names come back when this current generation of children have children.

Peter is definitely due a comeback.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 30/08/2021 08:26

How about Neil, Steven, Stuart or Craig?

Clawdy · 30/08/2021 08:27

But will Barry ever make a come-back?!

OoglyMoogly · 30/08/2021 08:29

@FortunesFave I'm Joanne and think your friend has incredibly good taste in names. Grin

TheRabbitStoleMyHat · 30/08/2021 09:05

Yes to 99% of 80s born women having the middle name Louise! I wonder what the modern day equivalent is? Grace

Every girl has Grace/Rose/May/Mae/Mai currently as a middle name, or hyphenated. They’re definitely the Louise of the 80s.

I like Joanna more than Joanne.

PearlyBird · 30/08/2021 09:08

@Clawdy

I think it will.

Some of today's Fins might have Finbar on the birth cert so possibly the next time the name comes around the fashionable nn will be Barry and the unfashionable nn will be Finn or anything similar.

At the moment Finn, Fionn, Findlay, they all sound like children but it's not impossible that Barry could come back.

Not invested in to it coming back at all!!

PearlyBird · 30/08/2021 09:09

What I mean is, I don't think the name Finbar will disappear completely and if it doesn't then there is the potential for Barry to reappear.

CaveMum · 30/08/2021 09:11

@Yesitsbess

Are there any baby Queenies out there?
When doing some family history research I discovered my 3rd great-grandmother was called Querina (born in the 1820s). I’ve never come across the name anywhere else and not sure it’s one likely to make a come back!
BeachDrifting · 30/08/2021 09:11

Phyllis!

Yesitsbess · 30/08/2021 09:15

@CaveMum but what a lovely name! I'm very much enjoying this thread.

No baby Carls yet though...

Yeah I can see this! There’s already names like Ronnie and Ray starting to appear. Peter, definitely. Maybe Susan, Jean and Marilyn, with Dennis, Leslie and Gordon coming next?
TroysMammy · 30/08/2021 09:19

Over 300 posts and no-one has mentioned my name Sad . On the flip side my name will be classed as unusual.

Fuckinellitsme · 30/08/2021 09:27

I was one of five girls in my class through primary who was called a variation of Julie. There were also two Dereks, two Donnas, three Lisas, three Michelles, three Hayleys, and four Sarahs. Clearly naming babies in the early 70s didn't call for a lot of imagination! When DD started school (early 00s) it was the same, but the names were Courtney, Jordan, Callum, Connor, Jake, Jack, Amy, Rebecca and Megan. DD has a very unusual but traditional name which stood out like a sore thumb!

ChiefAdjusterOfRubensShorts · 30/08/2021 09:43

Joanne is an awesome name!

CounsellorTroi · 30/08/2021 09:47

@Clawdy

But will Barry ever make a come-back?!
There were a few Barry John’s in Wales in the 70s after the great rugby player of that name!

I think Gareth also due a comeback.

PearlyBird · 30/08/2021 09:52

''Yeah I can see this! There’s already names like Ronnie and Ray starting to appear. Peter, definitely. Maybe Susan, Jean and Marilyn, with Dennis, Leslie and Gordon coming next?''

Agree, not sure which names will come back, but my DD born 2003 has a fairly frilly name I guess, very typical for that year and the years either side of it. All of her friends have the same pretty la la la names ! (nice names! But you know what I mean). But I'm definitely liking stronger sounding names now. With fewer syllables.

Terriah · 30/08/2021 09:57

I've recently heard of babies named Michelle and Crystal!

ElleOhWell · 30/08/2021 10:00

Born in the 70’s and my name has only been mentioned once, it wasn’t really popular back then and I’ve always disliked it. Usually on threads like this I’m quite used to others having the same opinion.

In my year at school there were lots of:-

Sharon
Tracy
Michelle
Amanda
Mandy
Debbie
Clare
Joanna
Joanne
Nicola
Lorraine
Louise
Heather
Karen

I’m quite pleased that I have a pretty awesome surname though so it sort of evened it all out! Grin

When Alan Bennett wrote some new Talking Heads a couple of years ago, one of the (unseen) characters was a teenage girl called Maureen and it really jarred as it was so unlikely and made him look completely out of touch with modern life. Mind you, the storyline for that one was highly Hmm

YES! I thought the same. The son was Michael - fair enough for a teenage boy. And his sister Maureen! It was very jarring. Given the age of ‘Maureen’ she should have been Millie or Ellie or Mia or something. I’m a huge Alan Bennett fan and that whole monologue was really unsettling
InFiveMins · 30/08/2021 17:38

I like the name Joanne!

I was thinking to myself recently how nice the name Lorraine is.

I also love the name David for a boy.

fedupslummymummy · 30/08/2021 17:54

My 18 year old son has a “70s” boys name (he is named after a close family friend). He is the only person I know of that age with that name and he went through nursery/school/college being the only person with that name. He had several teachers/lecturers with that name though! He always says he is an “old soul” and doesn’t mind having the name of a “middle aged man” Grin
