We are moving house. This house has a 'presence'. It is not a happy presence. And we would rather not move house with it!

Have already had a priest round to bless the house which helped.

But it's still not gone. The presence not the priest. He went after a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Removal men commented they could 'feel' the presence too.

So. Any ideas?

Any leaving the house ceremony type thing from another culture we could borrow?

We are white British Christian background. So open to any ideas! Thanks

Every Anglican diocese has an exorcist. All very low key and not talked about. Your diocesan office should be able to help. That ministry does not depend on your faith.

Lweji · 24/08/2021 17:33

@Monestera

May I politely suggest that people refrain from giving ill-informed advice? Presences are serious business. Please do not offer advice unless you have done the necessary training, qualifications and ApprenticeShipping.
How do you know you passed? How do we test for presence expulsion or happiness (presumably a happy presence is ok).

If it's serious, there will be sound evidence, right?

I wasn't aware being Pagan/a Practising Witch, or believing in the paranormal precluded anyone from holding down a 'sensible job'

@EmotionalSupportBear

www.infiniteembers.com/sage-smudging-cultural-appropriation/

"It was illegal for Natives to practice their religion (including smudging) until 1978 in the U.S. It’s something they’ve had to fight for. They’re still currently battling to be allowed to perform smudging in hospitals."

"So we’re destroying something of sacred importance for its beauty and making it less accessible for the Native American peoples, who were using it first. This is continuing systemic racism and oppression against Indigenous People. And we’ve already done enough."

"Sage must be respected for the sacred plant it is.
It really is magical. (All plants are!) It can be used as a spice, as medicine, and even to connect to spirit.

The most important takeaway from this post is to respect sage and the original Native American practice of burning it to smudge. The first step is educating yourself—so thanks for taking the time to read this article! Now share it with your friends and community.

And can we all agree that sage should no longer be sold at the checkout counters of expensive (white) clothing boutiques?

(If you live in SoCal, you know)

Respecting sage and the practice of smudging means we are respecting Native Americans. It brings us one step closer to healing as a collective. One step closer to unity."

But sure, cultural appropriation and racism against indiginous people is "fucking hilarious"

The author of the article on cultural appropriation has no idea what she is talking about. It was not illegal for American Indians to practice religion until 1978. What errant nonsense.

The article she refers to (and I doubt she read it) is refers to policy regarding access to sites that are subject to the National Historic Preservation Act.

AlfonsoTheMango · 24/08/2021 17:40

And, no, smudging should not be allowed in hospitals due to health and safety considerations.

I have always been a sceptic until we moved in to our current house. When we were renovating I kept hearing footsteps walking up the wooden stairs and into our dining room. Eventually I spoke to it and said that we were moving in and hopefully we can get along. It has been mostly quiet since but pops up occasionally. It scared our house sitter, who thought they had an intruder, as I had forgotten to mention it. I did have a fascinating conversation with the previous owner who said that they had spent ages researching to see if they could find out who or what it was. Also recently a friend who came to dinner went home and told their other half that they felt we had a presence at the top of the stairs but it seems benign. FWIW I don't really believe in ghosts, but we seem to have moved in with one! We have just let ours be, it was here before us and I expect it will be here after we have gone.

@TerraNovaTwo

To the posters who have zero input other than telling the OP to stop believing in 'woo', just because you haven't experienced supernatural phenomena does not mean it doesn't exist. Even top scientists can neither confirm or deny the existence of the paranormal. Metaphysical science is an actual field of study.
We don't believe in them because they don't exist. I'd suggest OP reads "Hallucinations" by Oliver Sacks. There's an excellent chapter on night hags that could prove very useful.
BeautifulBirds · 24/08/2021 17:55

I can't believe how rude some of these comments are. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Would you be so rude to Muslims, Christians, jew or any other faith?

Ignorant people!

BIWI · 24/08/2021 17:56

Yes, if they were spouting the same kind of tripe.

SwimmingUnderwater · 24/08/2021 17:57

@ThePluckOfTheCoward

Ok, I'll bite. If you are genuine Op, and I keep an open mind on such matters, then my suggestion is that you look for your local spiritualist church and contact them and explain the problem. They may be able to send someone to help the "presence" move on.

The reason I keep an open mind on such matters is because I have known someone who lived in a house which turned out to have two ghosts and someone from the local spiritualist church turned up unannounced to say they had received a message that there was a problem and that my friends needed help. They performed some sort of ritual, refused to take any money and the house was rid of the spirits. My friends were no nonsense people who did not believe in any of this stuff until it actually happened to them.

That’s a very good suggestion.

Gilda152 · 24/08/2021 17:59

@BeautifulBirds I've not read the whole thread but all man mad religion is woowoo and dangerous, so I wouldn't be rude to anyone but I certainly wouldn't prescribe to the (in my opinion) batshit nonsense of organised religion of any type either. By all means have your own beliefs, as long as they're not damaging to other people. But if ghosts exists, I doubt they give a crap about what Jesus Christ would say about stuff or any other religious figure for that reason. Unless they were practising christians in life I guess and then they might tiptoe obliging out of the front door who knows.

The author of the article on cultural appropriation has no idea what she is talking about. It was not illegal for American Indians to practice religion until 1978. What errant nonsense.

I'm pretty sure the author is referring to The Indian Religious Freedom Act (IRFA) which came in 1978. Before that, yes, people were incarcerated, attacked by police among others and had their sites attacked even when on reservation land.

It's pretty well documented marginalized faiths have and still are treated in the States.

I can sort of see an objection to those who delve into the shallow end of the spiritual path, and adopt certain things because it is on trend, but even then you see a propagation of important culture, beliefs and practices that opens the door a crack to those who may pursue things in more depth and richness.

The original requests to stop using white sage came both from environmental conservationists and certain American Indigenous activists when it was being overused by corporations and other companies to sell products often using our imagery to give it credibility when there was no link or benefit to the nations they were using for marketing that not only caused an issue for American Indigenous nations using it for rituals that were long and hard fought for through legal fights in living memory, but was affecting habitats in a significant way. It was nothing to do with how shallow or deep someone's practice is, it's was about the damage being done and asking people to look within their own traditions rather than be sold something that often has no connection to how it's being advertised, some felt that since our image was being used, we had a responsibility to speak out on the harm being done.

I don't have a strong opinion on an individual burning sage though I wouldn't recommend it for what the OP is talking about. I do have one when it comes to people misrepresenting why some of my kin asked people to reconsider it. It wasn't to divide, it was to protect.

Yesitsbess · 24/08/2021 18:13

This thread is brilliant.

In Thailand you have time get a special person out when you're building a home to have a word with the resident ghosts and ask them where they'd like to live, then you have to build them a really lovely ghost house (looks like a Thai birdbox but MASSIVE) and give them Fanta so they don't haunt your house.

You need Fanta and a fancy birdbox.

howdoireport · 24/08/2021 18:13

Another Catholic who has definitely had a priest bless the house ! Funnily enough we have been talking about that as we had a picture with the dates and signatures on it, from the priest . No idea where it’s gone now .... but my mum’s houses, my gran’s house etc all been done . My great granny used to ask them to bless the car too .... (Scottish/Irish family) .

I bet it’s a little girl, they are always little girls. My advice is to bribe them to leave with haribo or cheese-strings. Deffo not dairylea in case they attempt to hang upside down and choke on it

AlternativePerspective · 24/08/2021 18:15

Are ghosts vegan then? well if they are then you’ll be fine. After all vegans object to the use of any animal products, so given humans are also animal they won’t harm you. ;)

Zoflora, isn't that the answer to any household problem on here?

Well that, or a Ring doorbell.
