We are moving house. This house has a 'presence'. It is not a happy presence. And we would rather not move house with it!

Have already had a priest round to bless the house which helped.

But it's still not gone. The presence not the priest. He went after a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Removal men commented they could 'feel' the presence too.

So. Any ideas?

Any leaving the house ceremony type thing from another culture we could borrow?

We are white British Christian background. So open to any ideas! Thanks

I'm feeling a bit sorry for the OP now.

I bet she didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition...

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition 😄
EmotionalSupportBear · 24/08/2021 16:43

@Oogachuckachopsy

Are you all usually sensible people who hold down sensible jobs? Confused
I wasn't aware being Pagan/a Practising Witch, or believing in the paranormal precluded anyone from holding down a 'sensible job'
knittingaddict · 24/08/2021 16:44

I'm willing to bet that this house with the "presence" is old. Is that right? A house with creaking floorboards and slightly resembling a house from any number of haunted houses in fiction? It's not a 1980's semi?

I think there's your explanation. It's never a modern house that's haunted is it? Overactive imaginations I think.

@catandcandle

I have been watching this thread with interest. We are in the process of renovating an old house, and will be moving in to it in about a year or so. I know for a fact, from the history of the house, that at least two people (the couple who built it originally) died (of natural causes) in the house (they are both buried in a nearby graveyard). I am not really woo, nor am I a Christian (more of a Buddhist although not actively practicing all aspects) but I wondered what I should do for my own peace of mind in this situation, as I feel a bit strange about it. (The people who died would have been strict Catholics). I have tarot cards and some sage smudge sticks already, and various oils which I use sometimes for mediation. Any suggestions? I have not felt any presence in the house so far but have never spent more than a couple of hours (in the daytime).

(I know the graveyard where their graves are but have not located the graves yet, although I intend to).

You caaaannot move intooooo this house. It waaassss miiiine and I built it for my wiiiifffffeeee

Gosh did you- did you - did you hear that?

knittingaddict · 24/08/2021 16:46

I take it op has been spirited to the "other place", since they haven't bothered to come back to their thread..

In lots of cultures burning sage is a cleansing act so you could do that.

You could also pray in each room.

You could also put in lots of counter-energy: fresh living plants, lots of lamp light, happy images and since you are christian, crosses, icons, bibles, prayer books etc in little displays where the energy feels bad.

Yes, but not White Sage. That would be very bad. Apparently.

@Lweji

Even top scientists can neither confirm or deny the existence of the paranormal. Metaphysical science is an actual field of study.

Sure it is...

Actually, it is. Neuroscientists (like Julia Mossbridge) study intuition and predicting the future and have done for years.

Think you have exorcised the OP, she has disappeared.

FWIW, the NHS does recognise demons. I once worked with a psychiatrist who referred a really complex case to a professorial team and it was agreed (eventually) that they contacted the Vatican for help. Shock

Perhaps they are out shopping for sage, not white sage, obvs.

Op, cooooooome baaaaaaack.

@muffindays

You need the book "Creating Sacred Space with Feng Shui" by Karen Kingston, explains all about dark energy and how to get rid of it! Space clearing technique. Can't recommend enough!
Did you write it by any chance?
TableFlowerss · 24/08/2021 16:56

Could be the tooth fairy? Sometimes when my kids teeth are under their pillow, she clatters around and makes a lot of noise!

Catsrus · 24/08/2021 16:57
@Toddlerteaplease

A priest would do an exorcism. I have also used the word banishment and clearance used. But not blessing.
No.

Only SOME priests are licensed to do exorcisms, it's a bit niche, but any priest would come and do a blessing in a new house. Pretty standard in some cultures.

cooroocoocoo · 24/08/2021 16:58

Where I am from, the first step is usually to burn incense, open windows and state that the place is now yours, that the spirit is not welcome in your home and that it is time for the spirit to leave.

For the worst cases, a priest but while most priests can bless a place, very few can perform an exorcize ritual. There is one per parish at most. Your priest should be able to put you in touch with the relevant contact in your parish. My comments relate to a Roman Catholic context, I cannot comment on other denominations.

Monestera · 24/08/2021 16:58

May I politely suggest that people refrain from giving ill-informed advice? Presences are serious business. Please do not offer advice unless you have done the necessary training, qualifications and ApprenticeShipping.

UpstreamSwimmer · 24/08/2021 17:01

There's a very easy way to know whether your house is possessed: It isn't. Grow up.

-Jimmy Carr

QueeniesCroft · 24/08/2021 17:02

I'm not going to explain the background to this, but I have some experience. Here goes;
If it was there before you came, it will probably stay where it is when you leave. Just make sure you don't take anything (furniture etc) with you that was there when you arrived.
If you have a sympathetic priest, ask him to come back. Nobody does exorcisms without first consulting a psychiatrist these days, but he may perform a requiem Mass, or another blessing. If you feel threatened or uncomfortable, St Patrick's Breastplate is a good protective prayer (if only because concentrating on it will help to calm you).
Have the new place blessed ASAP. When I moved, I made sure the new place had already been blessed.

BeauxRingarde · 24/08/2021 17:02

@BeauxRingarde, to answer your question: it's not the faith of the person speaking that is powerful, but literally the name of Jesus Christ.

Ah come on now, are you telling me that my Irish husband, who says Jesus fucking Christ and Jaysus Mary and Joseph and all the bastarding saints many times a day is going around accidentally exorcising ghosts and demons?

Gilda152 · 24/08/2021 17:08

religion is a man made creation, so are ghosts. So I guess why not use on against the other. That actually tracks.

BiBabbles · 24/08/2021 17:08

Betony is a traditional herb for warding off of unwelcome spirits in the UK and parts of Europe. It can be grown or bought dried. When dried it was hung around or used in teas (it was also used to stop nightmares and ailments) though more recently I have heard it used like those wax melts in the wax burners - heating it releases more of the scent. I bought some for a project, it has a nice herbal woody scent, much nicer I think than sage.

Stop the spiritual pick n mix for a start.

No self respecting Catholic would have any truck with Tarot Cards or Native American spiritual tradition and if they were right, neither will their ultimate boss. They would be, again if they're right, be in Heaven, not rattling around your new home.

And why are you so attached to the thing that is the house that you're worried about some 'souls' wanting to share it? Surely if you are Buddhist, you'd think they've left that life well behind?

Bats, mice and squirrels are more of a real life concern in an old property.

@EmotionalSupportBear thank you for reading my response in good faith, it means a lot in these often cut and thrust internet discussions. You sound rather nice!

I’m sure you will have the opportunity to branch out if you wish. It is as you say a matter of respect. What I often find quite wondrous and beautiful is how often there are commonalities across the world’s spiritual traditions. Like how both the ancient Celts and Chinese both refer to ley lines as the dragon/serpent lines. How often the animal totems across shamanic systems symbolise similar.

There really is so much more that can unite us than divide us, if we look (respectfully) in the right places. As to the young/new to spiritual practice we have all been there, and I doubt either one of us hit the bullseye 100% in the beginning, and in fact speaking for myself I know I don’t get it entirely right now, but failure is a great teacher.

Beautiful3 · 24/08/2021 17:28

Burning sage throughout the house, in every single space every e.g. cupboard & wardrobes too. It will work.
