We are moving house. This house has a 'presence'. It is not a happy presence. And we would rather not move house with it!

Have already had a priest round to bless the house which helped.

But it's still not gone. The presence not the priest. He went after a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Removal men commented they could 'feel' the presence too.

So. Any ideas?

Any leaving the house ceremony type thing from another culture we could borrow?

We are white British Christian background. So open to any ideas! Thanks

@Yesitsbess

This thread is brilliant.

In Thailand you have time get a special person out when you're building a home to have a word with the resident ghosts and ask them where they'd like to live, then you have to build them a really lovely ghost house (looks like a Thai birdbox but MASSIVE) and give them Fanta so they don't haunt your house.

You need Fanta and a fancy birdbox.

This is England, though.

Might they settle for a bug box and a nice cup of Yorkshire Tea?

Blueraccoon · 24/08/2021 18:35

I’d just buy it a nice bunch of flowers 💐

LittleGwyneth · 24/08/2021 18:49

Sage smudge and palo santo I reckon.

Monestera · 24/08/2021 19:01

Sage smudge and palo santo I reckon.

That is incredibly disrespectful.

Rannva · 24/08/2021 19:08

@BeauxRingarde

`Of course a priest can do a blessing. My house has been blessed by an archbishop!

Well, I suppose they have little enough to do these days, they can fanny about on this nonsense instead.

But why would you get your house blessed by a priest unless you were catholic (or similar) and believed your house to be possessed? And if you did believe that, why would you also want to steal from other religions and cultures? Makes no sense.

She'll be getting them all in, a Priest, a Rabbi, the local vicar, a coven of nearby witches, an Imam, Pujari...

Anything for a Facebook post, eh. Tell everyone how special and 'in tune' you are.

@LittleGwyneth

Sage smudge and palo santo I reckon.
Palo Santo contributes to enormous environmental damage caused by the harvesting and exporting of it, to satisfy fashion-led pagans who appear to have forgotten the point is to connect to your surroundings and not pilfer those of Native Americans.

I have no idea whether this thread is full of earnest idiocy or dry sarcasm but either way I love it.

OP, try some Morris dancing, you might frighten the presence off ;)

TirisfalPumpkin · 24/08/2021 19:29

What if it’s like a popular film and OP is the presence, detecting the living moving into her house?

MasterBeth · 24/08/2021 19:31

Is this one of those threads where someone is posting as if they were living in a sitcom?

Saucery · 24/08/2021 19:32

Well that, or a Ring doorbell.

Ringu doorbell, surely?

JustJustWhy · 24/08/2021 19:46

@Monestera

May I politely suggest that people refrain from giving ill-informed advice? Presences are serious business. Please do not offer advice unless you have done the necessary training, qualifications and ApprenticeShipping.
I can't breathe!
Yesitsbess · 24/08/2021 19:46

@NeverDropYourMooncup

Or half a bitter shandy and a ham roll.

GrandDuchessRomanov · 24/08/2021 20:18

Maybe I missed it but why have these "presences" got such an aversion to white sage?

Also offering them sweets and cans of fanta, how are they supposed to open them if they are not physical beings?

SeoultoSeoul · 24/08/2021 20:32

@Honestmary

I bet it’s a little girl, they are always little girls. My advice is to bribe them to leave with haribo or cheese-strings. Deffo not dairylea in case they attempt to hang upside down and choke on it

@NeverDropYourMooncup

A sporran hanging in the wardrobe and and a cold bottle of Irn-Bru sorts them out in Scotland.

Well any sensible ghost buster would surely open the packets of sweets and cans of fanta Hmm

Just checked with DP about the Devon version. It's a scone and telling them that they'll have a new house dreckly.

Yesitsbess · 24/08/2021 21:36

Literally Ghost busting 101. That said I Thailand we didn't. Because bugs.

Apparently it's the thought that counts.

Lubballoo · 24/08/2021 21:42

@NeverDropYourMooncup
Here in London I imagine an overpriced croissant and a link of Farrow and Ball paint about the place might do the job. It'd certainly explain the otherwise nonsensical purchase of either.

Thetepidstepper · 24/08/2021 22:12

That's what was up with the wee girl in The Exorcist. Dairylea

GrrrlPwr · 24/08/2021 22:33

Hello everyone!
Wow moving day was hectic, I'm only just back on Mumsnet now.
Will catch up with any questions. Really curious to see what is recommended!

Probably won't be believed but that's ok

How long have you lived with it

Oh no no, everyone believes you don’t worry about that.

@EmotionalSupportBear

www.infiniteembers.com/sage-smudging-cultural-appropriation/

"It was illegal for Natives to practice their religion (including smudging) until 1978 in the U.S. It’s something they’ve had to fight for. They’re still currently battling to be allowed to perform smudging in hospitals."

"So we’re destroying something of sacred importance for its beauty and making it less accessible for the Native American peoples, who were using it first. This is continuing systemic racism and oppression against Indigenous People. And we’ve already done enough."

"Sage must be respected for the sacred plant it is.
It really is magical. (All plants are!) It can be used as a spice, as medicine, and even to connect to spirit.

The most important takeaway from this post is to respect sage and the original Native American practice of burning it to smudge. The first step is educating yourself—so thanks for taking the time to read this article! Now share it with your friends and community.

And can we all agree that sage should no longer be sold at the checkout counters of expensive (white) clothing boutiques?

(If you live in SoCal, you know)

Respecting sage and the practice of smudging means we are respecting Native Americans. It brings us one step closer to healing as a collective. One step closer to unity."

But sure, cultural appropriation and racism against indiginous people is "fucking hilarious"

Thank you @EmotionalSupportBear for this, it is fascinating. Have spent many years studying the links between 'traditional' orthodox religious belief and magic, and the mis appropriation of ritual by others, I hadn't thought about this one so welcome the chance to read it.
GrrrlPwr · 24/08/2021 23:07

Hi Ive only read to about 4.30pm and I'm shattered so I'll catch up fully tomorrow.

It was in our old house. New house feels lovely. No we didn't tell the new people.

Love the vegan honey, Santa & crystal meth ideas! Fantastic. Sprinkled in amongst proper advice, Mumsnet at its best!

I don't mind if you don't believe me. I wouldn't have either before we experienced weird stuff in the house.

Interestingly I felt we should all say goodbye and thank each room for the fun we had etc. It was lovely! Felt like a proper send off, as well as having given the house a really good clean. Pleased to know that's a 'thing' in Japan. It just felt the right thing to do.

Will catch up properly tomorrow y'all
