We are moving house. This house has a 'presence'. It is not a happy presence. And we would rather not move house with it!

Have already had a priest round to bless the house which helped.

But it's still not gone. The presence not the priest. He went after a cup of tea and a biscuit.

Removal men commented they could 'feel' the presence too.

So. Any ideas?

Any leaving the house ceremony type thing from another culture we could borrow?

We are white British Christian background. So open to any ideas! Thanks

Active imaginations in a house like yours have given you these feelings. By mentioning it to the movers the power of suggestion has led them to thinking they feel a presence too.

ILoveFlumps · 24/08/2021 15:59

@Toooldforthis321

If you are Christian then you need Ephesians 6: 10-18. Ask the vicar to keep praying. I will also pray for you (feel free to inbox me). I've been in your situation and it's awful, but keep the faith and it will go. You're are also right to think it might come with you as they do follow people (as has happened to me). If you are Christian though it cannot possess you, just pester you, which is horrid enough. Keep praying.
Absolutely this. I will join Toooldforthis321 in prayer for you.

Have you tried leaving it out a glass of milk and a (vegan) mince pie?

MINCE PIE, in August? Wash your mouth out with soap and water.

I have been watching this thread with interest. We are in the process of renovating an old house, and will be moving in to it in about a year or so. I know for a fact, from the history of the house, that at least two people (the couple who built it originally) died (of natural causes) in the house (they are both buried in a nearby graveyard). I am not really woo, nor am I a Christian (more of a Buddhist although not actively practicing all aspects) but I wondered what I should do for my own peace of mind in this situation, as I feel a bit strange about it. (The people who died would have been strict Catholics). I have tarot cards and some sage smudge sticks already, and various oils which I use sometimes for mediation. Any suggestions? I have not felt any presence in the house so far but have never spent more than a couple of hours (in the daytime).

(I know the graveyard where their graves are but have not located the graves yet, although I intend to).

Get naked and do a ritual dance

Nocutenamesleft · 24/08/2021 16:11

Ha. A sin eater??

Joking. I read about them recently.

Re honey: It seems vegan honey is made out of concentrated apples, Beet sugar and lemon juice (all plant based) but Odd, seeing as real honey (been honey) is made from nectar also produced by plants.

Also there's a risk that Father Christmas will show up for that and I don't think we want Santa getting mixed up in this.

@RightYesButNo

Sorry, by priest, do you mean Anglican? Because they just sort of generically bless the place. It’s the Roman Catholics you want. I’m not RC, and in general I don’t “believe” in these types of things, but they have VERY official training in exorcisms, and I think *@Toddlerteaplease* is correct re: specialist per diocese. The Catholic church’s chief exorcist also did a single interview I either watched or read and he was such a kindly seeming and unassuming elderly man, but he was very matter-of-fact that he had dealt with some shite.
Anglicans have Exorcists too. But they'll try Blessings first. Exorcisms are a last resort

Just about every house, but particularly old houses will have had people die in them. I've lived in some ancient houses; nothing untoward happened, leave well alone I would say.

And lots of people born in them too. Dying in hospital is a VERY recent thing.

@EmotionalSupportBear, I cannot (respectfully) disagree with you more. Cultural Appropriation is part of a new racism, designed along with other principles to keep people segregated and divided. Although I very much appreciate many flock to it from a place of wishing to do good. It actually accomplishes the opposite as the intention is not a pure one.

I’ve been practising for 25+ years, and yes my practice has been primarily in the western tradition, but I have had the privilege to work alongside many from indigenous cultures both in America, and with those who have made the trip to England and done spiritual work here, and I cannot stress strongly enough I hope many more continue to do so, they are very welcome.

I can sort of see an objection to those who delve into the shallow end of the spiritual path, and adopt certain things because it is on trend, but even then you see a propagation of important culture, beliefs and practices that opens the door a crack to those who may pursue things in more depth and richness.

The world’s spiritual traditions and faith’s interlock and are capable of great synergy and harmony (as long as you aren’t in the fundamentalist energy of “my system is best”). I have spiritual brothers and sisters from across the world, and have indeed been fortunate to receive instruction from many and in many systems.

That said the point on sourcing sustainable resources is a good one. May the light of understanding attend your sleeping and waking.

To the OP, just take whichever prominent figure from whichever religion you were raised in or resonates with you strongly now (Jesus, Buddha, Shiva, etc), and say a prayer for protection and to clear the house. Just doing that is way more powerful than people think. Any fear/anxiety on your part exacerbates the issue so do not fear, repeat as necessary.

BIWI · 24/08/2021 16:23

actual cases of paranormal activity are really astonishingly rare.

You don't say.

Why would you need to "do" anything?

People die. Chances are you've been in plenty places that people have died in. The people who died in your house aren't haunting it.

Oogachuckachopsy · 24/08/2021 16:30

I'm still confused on the sage thing. Thought it was the smudging-with-sage practice that is closed / off-limits to those not from the culture, not whether you use salvia apiana or salvia officinalis.

I feel like some western witch waving burning leaves about in her house is doing no harm to any indigenous culture (objecting to that is imo where cultural appropriation gets a bit ridiculous) - but it getting commercialised and commodified with western spiritual 'educators' speaking over the originators of the tradition is where it does harm and leads to a caricature of the culture getting embedded.

Sage is also lovely with chicken.

I'm feeling a bit sorry for the OP now.

I bet she didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition...

If you are than worried and If the people who died were catholics and are buried in a nearby churchyard, then why not contact the local catholic priest and ask if he would come and bless your new home.

My response on here was based on the OP not being a practising Witch, and someone unlikely to do the research behind a herbs particular use/history/politics...etc.

I can absolutely respect other practioners decisions to use White Sage if they choose, I've been practising 22 years myself :) although i've not had the privilege of being able to travel and work with those with other ethnic backgrounds.

Personally i think if herbs are home grown and sustainably sourced...etc and used in magic with respect, i have no issue with their use, just of late i'm somewhere jaded and irritated by people doing magic or practising without doing the appropriate research and seeing it as a modern 'fad' and running riot through everything i'm sure you and I have been taught to respect and handle with the utmost consideration and care!
