To ask for your “game changers”

Things you’ve bought that have essentially changed your life for the better.

For me, it’s a swim dress. Basically a swimming costume with a little skirt that just covers the bikini line. Flattering, hides my stomach and most importantly it doesn’t matter if my bikini line is needing a little attention. It has completely taken the stress out of taking the kids swimming and now we go all the time Smile

Other game changers for me include the perfect prep (🥰), L’Oréal eight-second wonder water, and Pinch of Nom.

-Phillips Lumea hair zapper thing
-Soda stream
-dyson air wrap

 • sage coffee machine

The next one will hopefully be a cordless vacuum but can't bring myself to get rid of my perfectly well functioning chorded one yet

Superking bed and mattress, cost us a fortune but it's amazing. So much space so I can toss and turn all night without waking DH as the mattress stops me bouncing him when I turn 😳(I'm fat)

We also have 2 double duvets rather than one superking.

What brand of bed and mattress if you don’t mind me asking?

Our bed was from Bensons for Beds, our mattress is a ROLO one.

Is the mattress hit to sleep in as it’s foam? I have a naturally filled lattes at the moment and find it far too hot.

My game changers are:

Sachets of 2 minute microwave rice (saves so much time);

Snag chub rub tights;

A car with parking camera. For the first time in 30 years of driving I can confidently parallel park.

I'm definitely going to get the robovac!

Coogee · 29/08/2021 19:03

A cat.

Our domestic rodent problems sorted in an eco friendly way.

TheGoogleMum · 29/08/2021 19:20

Making lots of notes! Robot vacuum has been on my wish list a while already

For me I'll echo some other thoughts
Reversing cameras! Parking so much easier
Dishwasher
Tumble dryer (although I would also like one of those heated airers!)
Streaming TV services, no need for sky or virgin anymore

CautiousOptimist11 · 29/08/2021 19:57

I had a replacement car recently with head up satnav display. Basically the map and your speed is projected onto bottom of windscreen so you never have to move your eyes. When I went back to our own amazing car, I was so sad we hadn't paid the extra ££ to get it in that one!

picklemewalnuts · 29/08/2021 19:58

Ooh, good question.

SandAndSea · 29/08/2021 22:01

@coodawoodashooda - Any chance you could post your kettle link? Many thanks!

KintsugiCat · 29/08/2021 22:04

Shiatsu chair cover

twilightcafe · 29/08/2021 22:25

Sleep headphones so I can drift off to sleep with something more restful than DH snoring.
Water softener for tap water we can drink straight out of the tap.
Audible subscription.
Android Auto app for satnav, music player and Internet radio in the car

Graphista · 29/08/2021 22:36

Noriday continually - taken me DECADES to get a gp that agrees to this and doesn't faff me about. I have endo and suffered for decades with the symptoms. Now I have no periods, no other symptoms, it's ace!

Lencent multi-usb port recommended on here - so much easier than farting around trying to find enough sockets, extension leads trailing everywhere etc

Headlamp which I use for crafting - again recommended on here. An omeril rechargeable. As I said i got it for crafting but soon after I bought it there was a power cut here and it was SO useful during that too. Different light settings and adjustable angle love it!

Prepping - first edged into it due to my parents err this way, then the Brexit prepping discussions on here were very informative. This meant when lockdown hit last year I wasn't totally screwed! I'm housebound and depend on online deliveries which went completely up the spout initially! Thanks to prepping guidelines I had essentials in. A couple of times more recently it's also been handy in terms of the more recent shortages haven't caught me out as much as they would have if I didn't have stocks in! Will be doing this for the rest of my life!

Chilmax pillow inserts - a lifesaver during the heatwave but also for the joys of peri!

Alexa - though I need to get myself sorted to make even better use of it! I find it extremely useful for reminders as I seem to get my best ideas when up to my elbows in chores (and therefore mucky/soapy hands so couldn't pop notes by hand on phone/tablet) so I can pop them on there by going "Alexa, at 6pm tomorrow remind me to call the bank about x" or "to move x to y room" or "source a new z"

I also like being able to check the time while doing chores

What I haven't figured out yet is how to get it to answer the random questions they make out on the ads it can do! I've asked their customer service people a number of times and they have been unable to help with this.

I'm losing weight too so it's also handy if I'm in the kitchen and I've forgotten my phone to use as a calculator when weighing stuff (eg the Mayo starts off as 325g and is now 307g how many g is it I've removed? - and yes my maths is that shit! I suspect dyscalculia) but it can't tell me "how many cals in 100g of x" which I think it should be able to do?

Any users with tips I'd be grateful

Mostly used as a speaker for streaming and playing music which I love I especially love multi room music playing when I'm doing chores as I have music everywhere I go and it keeps me motivated

My disability kitchen aids - can opener, bottle/jar opener etc - resisted this for far longer than I should have as I think I didn't want to admit I needed them felt so stupid when I got them and they made my life soooo much easier. Similar issue someone posted on here on a similar thread about not being locked into thinking we had to do the same things as everyone else or we did/had what we thought we should. This led to me thinking I needed to stop beating myself up about the way I do certain things (I have ocd) so eg if I wanna wash my laundry twice that's my business and I'm not hurting anyone else but it makes my life easier. Also having multiples of cooking utensils because if I drop them (a feature of my physical disability) I was then struggling to finish the cooking using a different but unsuitable utensil (I can't pick them up straight away due to the disability and ocd and can't wash them straight away cos of the ocd and probably causing the dish to burn/get messed up!) so now I have 3 of everything! That way I am covered and again it's not hurting anyone so why not? I was too mired in thinking it wasn't "normal" to have eg more than one slotted spoon!

A comfortable fish slice - I found one I liked and bought ten.

This made me so happy to read and see I'm not the only one on the utensil thing!

@diamondpony80 I'm puzzled on the soup maker thing though. You can make a pot of soup with a normal pot and veggies and stick in 20 mins or so too. How is a soup maker easier?

Tempted by the flat lay make up bags!

Colour catchers I've used for YEARS so much easier than faffing separating colours especially now I live alone as it means I'm not without items while I wait for a full load to build up

Seconding frozen diced/sliced onions. I suffer terribly from the tears/crying thing to the point I'm effectively blinded for about half an hour! Again also living alone is much easier for small amounts for one meal.

Also long charger cables - especially with this bloody phone! Battery draining murder with it especially lately. Can upgrade next month though thankfully

I have airpods but barely use them and feel I am wasting them - any tips? What do people mostly use them for?

A recent one for me - I've started having an actimel drink once a day, it's massively reduced bloating, wind and trapped wind huge difference for me I'm so much more comfortable and generally have more energy but not sure if that's the actimel

@GrandDuchessRomanov studio do indeed have some lovely swimsuits - who'd have thought?!
Shame they don't have great delivery though. I need next day really or at least preferred day

@Workyticket how do you do the Alexa shopping list that ISN'T Linked to the shops app that's just a list I need this

JedEye · 29/08/2021 22:50

Store baking trays in the oven.

Lndnmummy · 29/08/2021 23:27

@KintsugiCat do you have a link?

diamondpony80 · 30/08/2021 06:02

@Graphista You can indeed. It's the convenience isn't it? A stick blender doesn't blend as smooth as the soup maker does either (unless you use it for a very long time). I can't understand why people use things like omelette makers either and yet they're very popular.

diamondpony80 · 30/08/2021 06:04
@diamondpony80 which brand of collagen powder do you use?
Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides

CleanQueen123 · 30/08/2021 07:54

Thanks @diamondpony80. My nails are awful and no amount of strengthening nail varnish and cuticle oil seems to be making a difference.

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/08/2021 08:52

@Graphista Soup makers are just very convenient. When I’m making minted pea It’s half an onion, 350g frozen peas, teaspoon and half mint and a chicken stock cube in water. You just put it all in and when you go back you have perfectly blended soup. If a recipe needs potato you don’t need to peel it because it blends it so smooth.

I made soup on the hob for years but bought a soup maker and I’m converted.

SwimmingUnderwater · 30/08/2021 09:26

I’ve been using Eufy. Firstly there are no cable ties in my box. It is getting stuck all the time , trying to climb the base of floor lamps and the frame of an Ikea chair. I am finding I have to remove everything off the floor, including the lamps. It’s impossible to remove aerial cables etc. I’m not too sure I think it’s the best thing since sliced bread, but we will see. Having to unplug everything and put them out of reach is a pain.

Workyticket · 30/08/2021 09:42

@Graphista literally just ssy to Alexa

"Add bread, tomatoes and toilet roll to the shopping list" or whatever you want

It juat records it in a liat on your phone/ or it can read it back to you. You can then tick things off the app list as you shop
