Live in south east not sure if that has any relevance. Just doing some walking and stopped of at an ice cream van.Got a small ice cream (one scoop) and been charged £3! Am shocked. Not brought an ice cream from a van for years but are these the prices? And if so how do families with kids afford this?.
Maybe I was just ripped of but AIBU to think things like this are ridiculously expensive and how does a family with a couple of kids afford things like this?

@ichundich

Bring ice creams / lollies from home or pop into a corner shop to grab some from there instead? I never buy from ice cream vans because (a) I don't like their ice cream, (b) they're overpriced, (c) they pollute the environment.
Wouldn't ice-creams from home melt?
DerAlteMann · 23/08/2021 02:03

Ice cream vans parked up somewhere are always expensive. My DF would never buy from one. If we wanted an ice cream when we were kids we had to wait until we found a shop.

dontshootmeforthis · 23/08/2021 04:24

I don't think that's too expensive, bearing in mind a coffee can cost more than that!

Jennybeans401 · 23/08/2021 04:34

Pretty much standard ice cream van charge, I was a bit surprised though when it cost nearly £20 for ice creams.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/08/2021 05:11

I bet SupermanWithTheGreyHair is the person who gave our local naice 'we make lovely ice cream in 20 flavours with milk from our own jersey cows and you have to queue for ages to buy one on a nice day' ice cream farm a negative review because they didn't have any non dairy options.

They also got a negative review because the farm smelled like a farm...

A ‘99’ is an ice cream in a cone with a flake. It can be Mr Whippy, a scoop or posh ice cream - if it has a flake stuck in it, it is called a ‘99’.
But OP has already said it was the basic ice cream.

I don’t get all the people berating OP, it’s ok to find ice cream vans expensive, OP can choose not to buy from there, she’s not responsible for keeping ice cream vans in business.

stairway · 23/08/2021 06:56

SuperManWithTheGreyHair, surely farms with better welfare standards are the way to go. There is no way you will have sways of people eating soy ice cream. I live fairly rurally and the cows near me all seemvery healthy and happy doing what cows like to do. I wouldn’t want to see them disappear.

liveforsummer · 23/08/2021 07:15

I remember buying from an ice cream van as a child in the 80's and being disappointed that a 99 wasn't only 99p and that the name was misleading 😆. They haven't gone up that much really when you compare to a Freddo or a packet of polos

AdventuresDownRabbitholes · 23/08/2021 07:30

@Ilovegreentomatoes

No price list on display. I can probably see why.
That's a matter for trading standards

www.gov.uk/product-labelling-the-law

But ice cream vans cost an awful lot to run - a new one can easily cost £60-80k, and there's the price of fuel as the engine invariably has to be left idling to run the freezer and Mr Whippy machine - along with things like specialist vehicle insurance, pitch fees, street trading licences... the cost of the Mr Whippy product itself is negligible in comparison to all the other costs.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/08/2021 07:35

I think you need to pay some branding as well in some cases.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/08/2021 07:40

I can't belive that level of derail😂
I thought I was bored on Sunday. Looks like some people have it even worse. Made me feel better abput my lack of plans yesterday 😂

R0tational · 23/08/2021 08:09

TLDR. Life is indeed expensive and it sucks for lots of us.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 23/08/2021 08:25

Some posters do seem to have a bee in their bonnet regarding that I found the ice cream expensive. As I've repeated endlessly it was the basic of basic ice creams and I still think it was over priced but oh well lesson learned and I will not be buying from a van again.

MrsFin · 23/08/2021 08:27

I don't suppose he sold many ice creams last year. Look on it as a charity donation

lollipoprainbow · 23/08/2021 08:27

I'm with you OP, also in South East cost of everything is extortionate but wages don't go up its crap.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 23/08/2021 08:28

And it was a one scoop lemon ice which I've already mentioned up thread.

Standard price for around here, Suffolk coast. We pop to Lidl and get a box of their magnum style ice creams, £1.59 for 6!

TheGenealogist · 23/08/2021 08:50

Gosh, aren't vegans TEDIOUS. Hmm

£3 is probably 50p more than I'd expect to pay, but as others have said as a treat it compares with a coffee from a takeaway place like Starbucks. We don't have takeaway coffee every day we are out, neither do we have ice cream every day.

I also think it's very unrealistic to think that everything should be affordable for absolutely everyone.

LuaDipa · 23/08/2021 09:13

Dh recently had cause to speak to an ice-cream vendor through his work. People think of this as low overhead, but an ice-cream van will cost well over £100K + maintenance, fuel etc and there are huge fees paid to allow them to sell their wares in parks and the like. It’s a business like any other. I’m unsure why anyone would complain about the cost of an ice-cream but not the costs of a coffee, although I do agree that it’s poor form to not have prices displayed.

If you bother to read you’ll see that everyone talking about dairy farming and animal welfare has said they aren’t vegan.

I’m not vegan but I find people who live in denial about farming far more TEDIOUS.

LynetteScavo · 23/08/2021 10:13

I would have asked how much is was going to cost if there were no prices!

I actually think it's odd not to have asked.

Maybe the seller makes up the price according to how well off you look Grin

Seriously?! The thread is about ice cream, not coffee.
Singleorigincoffee · 23/08/2021 10:38

Sounds like the van was making up business profits during the hot season, esp if near beach or tourist spot.

Saying that I was in a rather expensive part of the south yesterday and spent £4.50 on 2 scoops of fancy artisan ice cream to share with DP (and dog got a few licks at the the end) and it was worth it.

Defo not worth if just usual ice cream van type tho imo

labazslovesliving · 23/08/2021 10:43

whipped creamy ice cream with a flake that is a true 99. I remember when I was young liked the ice cream cone with some red sauce and nuts sprinkled on it not sure what that would be called. there was an oyster the outside had chocolate and coconut coating with ice cream inside. or the plastic cone with ice cream and a bubble gum in the bottom yummy. funny faces not like the ones today chocolate button eyes Fab lollies oh heaven
