Live in south east not sure if that has any relevance. Just doing some walking and stopped of at an ice cream van.Got a small ice cream (one scoop) and been charged £3! Am shocked. Not brought an ice cream from a van for years but are these the prices? And if so how do families with kids afford this?.
Maybe I was just ripped of but AIBU to think things like this are ridiculously expensive and how does a family with a couple of kids afford things like this?

I've realised that I don't know a single soft serve machine which wouldn't be an absolute PITA and break on regular basis😂 Like maccies' milkshake machine😂

newnortherner111 · 22/08/2021 22:13

For what it is compared with other snacks/treats, it is expensive.

justasking111 · 22/08/2021 22:14

Wow that's cheap. Was stunned to be charged£4.50 for grandchildren this year each. N Wales

catsjammies · 22/08/2021 22:25

I don't like those vans generally, so we try and find a Tesco's and buy a box of magnums or whatever! So much cheaper!

mewkins · 22/08/2021 22:29

I'm in the SE and it's £2 for a 99 here! So yes that is expensive.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 22/08/2021 22:52

Its AIBU so expected the vultures to be popping up here and there!

@somewhereovertherain

Some ice cream maths for you

£21 + vat for 5ltr tub of farm made ice cream. 34 scoops from a tub. 62p per scoop

Wafer cone 3p approx
Waffle cone 20p
Flake 9p.

So it's costs £1.10 to produce an ice cream for our shop. This is very good quality locally made ice cream from a farms own milk.

We would sell that at £2.80.

Wafer cone with wimpy costs about 10p but then you need the van and the machine.

And insurance. And salaries people can live on!
VioletSand · 22/08/2021 22:59

Im low income and I spent £25 at an ice cream van last week. Really your priorities are way off.

That's absolute madness. Why are you doing that?

Me and daughter live on less than £1000 a month and once rent and council tax is paid we have very little left.

I don't understand this post though. The poster was saying minimum wage equates to £1600 per month. So obviously in most cases after rent and council tax is paid there'd be less than £1000 per month left if earning the minimum and only one adult in the household?

SuperCaliFragalistic · 22/08/2021 23:04

I paid £3.10 per ice cream today at a nice Italian gelato place in the SW. Was happy to pay it as they had gluten free cones and normally DD is stuck with a calippo or something at a standard place. It may feel like a rip off if you can choose to buy an ice cream anywhere but this was the only place in town DD could have a normal ice cream.

You've forgotten to account for VAT Staff wages Employers national insurance contribution Staff pensions Building or vehicle insurance Public liability insurance Equipment hire or purchase plus maintenance Wastage (broken cones) Spoons and napkins Utilities Business rates Cleaning materials and salary Advertising And then once you've paid for all that you pay Corporation tax on any profits

I mean that's not even an exhaustive list. And a lot of businesses now have a bounce back loan to pay off as well.

We also use a locally made high quality farm ice cream. We wanted to support farms trying to be better. And we didn't want to stock anything with palm oil in it, mostly for eco reasons but also because it ruins ice cream.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 22/08/2021 23:13

But Ive explained this twice n you know this .. so

How would I know this? So I presume that’s what’s was in your deleted posts! I didn’t see them.
You offered to tell posters the name of this farm, which manages to produce milk without resorting to the methods that I described. Of course you were never going to do it because this type of farm doesn’t exist in the U.K.

Lindy2 · 22/08/2021 23:15

That's a bit steep for a single scoop if it had no added extras like a flake and sprinkles.

I once let my DD go to the icecream van herself because I was on the phone. I gave her £10 and said bring me back the change. No joke, she came back with the biggest icecream known to mankind. It had it's own plastic tray it was that big and was covered in sprinkles, flakes, sauce, cream, everything! She had the biggest, happiest grin on her face as she handed me back £2 change. That ice cream has gone down in our family history. 😂

Ilovegreentomatoes · 22/08/2021 23:18

@SupermanWithTheGreyHair honestly this thread is meant to be about the expense of an ice cream and you seem to be on one.

On one? No, just asking a poster to provide what they offered. 🤷🏻‍♀️

correct... I offered to name my cousins Farm..

I spoke to MNHQ and they removed it as naming the Farm would identify me by default ..

Sorry I shouldn't have suggested it.. 🌸

Kanaloa · 22/08/2021 23:23

I don’t think anyone is ‘on one’ but it is a bit odd to say I know an ethical dairy farm and I can share the address of it just to refuse to share the address when asked.

As I said, I do eat dairy products so I’m not on my high horse looking down, but it is odd to offer information then refuse to share it.

QueenBee52 · 22/08/2021 23:23

You know this isn't true but that's not my battle.. you are entitled to your opinion .. but you have derailed OP's thread enough ..

Sorry @Ilovegreentomatoes

Ive already explained.. several times now..

It would be identifying to me therefore I won't be doing so.

It depends - that awful stuff from ice cream van dispensers - not worth it. A good quality ice cream - definitely!
