Live in south east not sure if that has any relevance. Just doing some walking and stopped of at an ice cream van.Got a small ice cream (one scoop) and been charged £3! Am shocked. Not brought an ice cream from a van for years but are these the prices? And if so how do families with kids afford this?.
Maybe I was just ripped of but AIBU to think things like this are ridiculously expensive and how does a family with a couple of kids afford things like this?

@Blankscreen

At a National Trust place in Surrey today it was £2.75 a scoop. 75p for a flake I was a bit shocked but bought them anyway what do I think it was worth?

I guess if you can afford to spend £1.75 for example on an ice cream the you can afford £2.75

iMO The extra £1 extra doesn't make it affordable or unaffordable it's just our perception of what an ice cream is worth.

If money is tight I wouldn't be buying any ice creams out in the first place

I was told that there was a national shortage of flakes. I don't know if they've caught up yet though. Perhaps prices of flakes have been pushed up as a result
LesLavandes · 22/08/2021 21:02

What was the location/area?

Boatonthehorizon · 22/08/2021 21:08

How low do you think low income is? 10ph is min wage.
Its a third of an hours work.
40 hours = 400 pw
1600 pm is min wage.
Im low income and I spent £25 at an ice cream van last week. Really your priorities are way off.

Spidey66 · 22/08/2021 21:09

I'm in London (zone 3 so not central) and that sounds about right....£2-3 Sounds right. If you think it's dear, maybe get a tub.

AngryWhompingWillow · 22/08/2021 21:14

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland

My parents never ever bought an ice cream from a van when I was growing up and we were well off. I earn plenty enough to afford it but don't, I just buy tubs for the freezer.

Awwww, how sad. Sad I feel bad for you. Sad

Running up the road after the ice cream van, clutching the money for an ice lolly, is a rite of passage for many children.

You seem to have the attitude in your post that your family is a bit superior because you never had ice creams from the 'ice cream man.'

I actually find it somewhat sad and a bit depressing.

At least you managed to tell us all that you earn plenty of money though, so I am sure that will make you feel a bit better... Smile

Neolara · 22/08/2021 21:16

I'm currently on holiday in a remote part of Wales. An ice-cream cone seems to be £3. But the ice-creams are spectacular ( made in local farms) and enormous.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 22/08/2021 21:19

Minimum wage is £8.92 ph.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 22/08/2021 21:20

For the post that said it was £10 ph.

In Leeds, £2.50-£3.00 is standard, although you can add sauce and sprinkles. I hate ice cream so I cannot judge if this is extortionate or inflation. Crisps certainly were 10p growing up.

Blossomandbee · 22/08/2021 21:24

I'm in the Midlands and a van comes round regularly. A small cone is £1 and they're absolutely huge (I struggle to manage one) that also includes any sauces and sprinkles.
I wouldn't be overly surprised at £3 though, especially in the South East

Kanaloa · 22/08/2021 21:28

I wouldn’t say it’s sad and depressing if someone’s never had an ice cream from a van. And I don’t think it’s a rite of passage either, it’s just a treat some people have and some don’t. I’m sure those that have ice cream from the freezer do other things that the ice cream van children don’t.

canonlydoblue · 22/08/2021 21:29

I generally avoid ice cream vans. We passed one at a charity day yesterday and my children (I have five) asked for one, but a quick glance at the prices showed Mr Whippy's to start at £2.60. We popped into Tesco and I bought three boxes of fake Magnums, Cornettos and lollies for £3. I know all the local good value ice cream parlors though and can generally get children's cones for £1.50 and basic adult cones for £2-£2.50. There is a lovely lady with a van who does children's whippy cones for 80p and always gives my youngest a free one. I cringed the last time I went to a NT trust property and spent the best part of £20 on tiny tubs of ice cream.

Lucyccfc68 · 22/08/2021 21:30

A ‘99’ is an ice cream in a cone with a flake. It can be Mr Whippy, a scoop or posh ice cream - if it has a flake stuck in it, it is called a ‘99’.

Sh05 · 22/08/2021 21:31

We're in the north west, an ice-cream from a standard Mr Whippy van is around £1,50.
At a local farm you can get two large scoops in a pot or on a largeish waffle cone for £3, extra toppings at that farm are 25p each.
When we on a very low income I'd save on lunches by taking sandwiches from home so we could treat the kids to a luxury ice-cream at the end of the day.

@hashbrownsandwich

First world problem.
The response of the sanctimonious idiots.
PrincessNutella · 22/08/2021 21:36

Why is it anybody's responsibility to do the hard work of sitting in an ice cream van all day selling ice cream at a charity rate? What about that person's children? Who subsidizes them?

Pollaidh · 22/08/2021 21:37

Last week in France we were paying 3.50 EUR for 1 scoop (but nice cone) from one place, and 4.50 EUR for 1 scoop from a more artisan type place.

JudgeJ · 22/08/2021 21:37

@FlibbertyGibbitt

My dad would say 60 shillings ! 🤣
He sounds like my late mother, I often wonder what she's make of some of the things I buy when translated into 'proper money'!
lilmishap · 22/08/2021 21:38

I moved from Leicester where prices were 80p-1.00 for single cone flake and sauce depending on the van, to Tunbridge Wells where the price was 3.99.

That was a fucking shock.

Di11y · 22/08/2021 21:41

Yep my kids have learned you can get 8 ice creams from the supermarket for the price of one from a truck and don't ask me any more.

VioletSand · 22/08/2021 21:42

Not sure I'd get worked up about this. It's not as though you're buying them daily?

Sorry @SupermanWithTheGreyHair

I asked for it to be removed... as it would be self identifying .. and I don't wish myself to be identified .. 🌸

Christ the comments on here. Confused
OP, I agree with you, it is ridiculous. Ignore the bitchy comments, something in the water tonight clearly x

There are people living on way less than what you have quoted here.

Me and daughter live on less than £1000 a month and once rent and council tax is paid we have very little left.

"How low do you think low income is?"
Because I can tell you, it's a lot lot lower than you evidently think.

somewhereovertherain · 22/08/2021 22:00

Some ice cream maths for you

£21 + vat for 5ltr tub of farm made ice cream. 34 scoops from a tub. 62p per scoop

Wafer cone 3p approx
Waffle cone 20p
Flake 9p.

So it's costs £1.10 to produce an ice cream for our shop. This is very good quality locally made ice cream from a farms own milk.

We would sell that at £2.80.

Wafer cone with wimpy costs about 10p but then you need the van and the machine.
