To have farted in Yoga class and be terrified of returning?

I knew it could happen and had even read tips on stopping it happening before I went so of course, it was all I could think about, and I bloody did it!

What was worse is that I was a little late so was right at the front of the class. The instructor turned to look at me so i know he heard and there were a few titters behind meBlush. The mats made it reverberate a bit as well.

I spent the rest of the class pretending I had cramp in my legs so couldn’t lift them up.

It was excruciating but I really want to get into Yoga for the relaxation benefits.

I just know it’s going to happen again (undercarriage is wrecked due to having 5 DC and I’m a vegetarian so naturally gassy) so should I just get over my embarrassment and accept it might be a natural side effect? We’re all adults after all.

Will I be known as the farty one?

No one else farted I think. If everyone was doing it I wouldn’t mind so much!

Blimey 😳. She didn’t deliberately do it No, but she said it's likely to happen again because she's "naturally gassy". Maybe you don't mind inhaling fart gasses and smells in a Yoga class, but I think it's pretty disgusting.

do you think your attitude to farting might say more about you than other people when you read your response in comparison with everyone else’s?
I don't really care how people perceive my attitude to farts, most people have low standards anyway. In my world, farts are not natural, and not something you should accept in yourself or in others. You're not supposed to be gassy, it's actually a sign that something is wrong with your gut, or that you're eating wrong. And just like with any other medical issues or eating issues, it's something you should seek help for.

Of course it is natural to fart! Grin It is impossible to stop air getting into the digestive system, even if you ate no "gassy" food. Breathing, chewing and swallowing saliva all puts air into your digestive tract and it has to come out at some point!

There's definitely something about worrying about farming that seems to make it more likely though. And more intrusive when it does!

You've got to be kidding @DelphineMarineaux

your world is factually wrong

Confusedandshaken · 23/08/2021 09:52

Don't give it another thought. I do a lot of yoga including residential retreats where the food is nearly always vegetarian. After a delicious lunch of dhal and brown rice or a vegetarian chilli nearly everyone will be farting! And don't get me started on the fanny farts!

Girasole02 · 23/08/2021 09:56

Go back. Most people have already forgotten about it and they'll be too concerned about them doing one to worry what you are doing .

Bryonyshcmyony · 23/08/2021 09:59

I must say since I've cut out sugar from my diet I fart much less.

Camrette · 23/08/2021 10:30

I farted at yoga last week and I hardly ever fart. I’m similarly mortified but my one saving grace is that the friend I usually go with wasn’t there so she didn’t witness it! It’s happened to a few people in my classes and everyone just ignores it but it doesn’t stop me feeling really embarrassed.

OP I work in a gym and no instructor will give two craps. Just so that you know though, it's easy for it to happen a lot if you're susceptible to it and have pelvic issues etc so you might not relax at ALL if you go to yoga worried about it, which kind of defeats the purpose of the relaxation you're after. Maybe try a couple of at home classes instead first?

Btw you shouldn't be naturally gassy just because you're a vegetarian. Might be food intolerances, imbalanced gut Flora, etc at play there which'd be worth checking out.

Polkadots2021 · 23/08/2021 11:01

@DelphineMarineaux

There's no such thing as "naturally gassy". You're not supposed to be chronically gassy - that's your body telling you that your diet is wrong. How about cleaning it up and mend your gut health?

It's also not fair to expose other people to your gasses and the smell of them just because you think they are natural. Why should people have to put up with that in a confined space? Please sort your gas issue out, then worry about yoga, honestly.

@DelphineMarineaux while you might be right, why be so judgemental and shaming? Passing gas is natural and we all do it (without realising for a lot of us, as all human bodies have to release gas during the day-its a required part of our normal digestive work although yes, if healthy, there shouldn't be odor).

You're right that gassy, odorous flatulence definitely points to gut imbalances and so on - I help a lot of clients with this. It might not be pleasant but it doesn't make someone a slob if they're battling undiagnosed food imbalances, maybe autoimmune conditions that affect the gut in complex, hard to determine ways, if they've suffered chronic stress that has impacted digestion, lots of birth issues that cause strapped wind and poor stomach and pelvic strength, and so on.

I recognise the exact same issues you do, but don't be cruel. It's embarrassing and uncomfortable for a lot of people who are just trying to improve their health.

Bryonyshcmyony · 23/08/2021 11:33

I agree with everything that you say but I still hated it. It's not relaxing if you are laying down taking deep breaths of someone's farty bum.

WTF0ver · 23/08/2021 11:51

My yoga mat makes lots of loud farting noises sometimes, blame it on your mat!

tenterden · 23/08/2021 11:55

This is why I had to give up yoga classes! I am one of those unfortunates who has no advance warning whatsoever of an impending fart - they just sneak out, taking me completely by surprise.

ViciousJackdaw · 23/08/2021 12:33

Oh come off it @DelphineMarineaux, I bet your farts reek!

Mydogisagentleman · 23/08/2021 12:45

If it’s any comfort OP, you were in a class with more than one person.
I was alone with the physio this morning, I made a noise like a vuvuzela

Egghead68 · 23/08/2021 14:19

I was once in a one on one meeting with my boss and she farted. She styled it out beautifully.

Bryonyshcmyony · 23/08/2021 14:27

All farts reek. Surely if you fart loads you just need a poo? Apart from all those with gut issues.

mumcop · 23/08/2021 14:30

We've all done it!

kidsatuniemptynester · 23/08/2021 14:34

Fear of farting is my prime reason for not going to yoga classes. Last time I went, I was so uptight, holding it in that the class was pointless. I am also a giggler and if someone, especially a pompous theatrical deep breather type let out a fart, I would be cramped over with suppressed laughter.

They really don’t.
