To have farted in Yoga class and be terrified of returning?

FlatulenceFearer · 21/08/2021 22:23

I knew it could happen and had even read tips on stopping it happening before I went so of course, it was all I could think about, and I bloody did it!

What was worse is that I was a little late so was right at the front of the class. The instructor turned to look at me so i know he heard and there were a few titters behind meBlush. The mats made it reverberate a bit as well.

I spent the rest of the class pretending I had cramp in my legs so couldn’t lift them up.

It was excruciating but I really want to get into Yoga for the relaxation benefits.

I just know it’s going to happen again (undercarriage is wrecked due to having 5 DC and I’m a vegetarian so naturally gassy) so should I just get over my embarrassment and accept it might be a natural side effect? We’re all adults after all.

Will I be known as the farty one?

No one else farted I think. If everyone was doing it I wouldn’t mind so much!

Our teacher wrapped herarns round her legs and did it once and everyone heard it through the microphone. There was a moment of silence and then the whole class started laughing in a sort of ripple from the front row to the back.

Tangled123 · 22/08/2021 06:54

I used to fart all the time coming down from a shoulder stand. Luckily, I was at home rather than in a class, but I don’t do that pose anymore.
I never heard anyone fart when I attended public classes, but I would just be grateful it wasn’t me if I did. By the next class, I probably wouldn’t even know who it was.

Egghead68 · 22/08/2021 06:56

So common. I hope it doesn’t put you off returning. If it does maybe find a zoom class and do it on mute!

Sweetsweetsoul · 22/08/2021 06:59

My issue is not bottom farts but fanny farts in yoga! Any position where you lift your leg up high in the air (from downward dog for example) must suck up lots of air because I then can’t stop fanny farting after. Blush I now don’t do those positions but even so I can never fully relax in a class, which defeats the object of going.

AwkwardSquad · 22/08/2021 07:01

I spend pretty much every yoga class giving my core an extra workout to hold in the gas. But oh the unconstrained fart when I get out of the studio! Bliss!

IckyPop · 22/08/2021 07:02

I had the bloke in front of me fart in my face when bending over in a yoga class. I nearly died trying not to laugh and kept catching the eye of another women and we were silently crying with laughter.
He just styled it out and carried on as if nothing had happened. He also returned to the class the next week, and for weeks after that. Although, he would on occasion take himself out of the class for a minute, presumably to let rip.
In my mind I do call Farting Yoga Man though, and I do tell it as one of my go to stories Grin

IckyPop · 22/08/2021 07:04

@Phyllis321

Don’t worry, it’s not unusual. Bikram yoga is the worst for mighty trumps, apparently. My friend still recounts in indignation when a scantily-clad man’s ball sweat dripped on her mat in a busy Bikram class Grin.

I once snored so loud during the relaxation that I woke myself up.

DelphineMarineaux · 22/08/2021 08:05

There's no such thing as "naturally gassy". You're not supposed to be chronically gassy - that's your body telling you that your diet is wrong. How about cleaning it up and mend your gut health?

It's also not fair to expose other people to your gasses and the smell of them just because you think they are natural. Why should people have to put up with that in a confined space? Please sort your gas issue out, then worry about yoga, honestly.

Boriswentcamping · 22/08/2021 08:21

Used to work as a yoga teacher and these things happen both to teachers and students. It's really not a big deal and although there might be a few sniggers - most people will have forgotten about it by next week. The teacher will just ignore it and move in. Honestly it's not a reason to stop going. Make sure you are not straining in any way or breath holding with the exercises as this isn't good technique. It happens to the best of us though Wink

Idontknowwhat2 · 22/08/2021 08:41

I wouldn't go back

One of the many reasons why I do yoga with Adriene alone at home in my living room 😂
I do my yoga at home too and farting does happen sometimes! I prefer at home yoga as can get easily distracted by others. At home I can concentrate better!
pickingdaisies · 22/08/2021 09:14

I hereby withdraw my windeze suggestion - Oops! BlushGrin

ineedsun · 22/08/2021 09:17

@FlatulenceFearer

Someone thought this was a troll post Hmm. Seriously? Who trolls about farting at yoga Grin.

The Windeze is an excellent suggestion! Should have thought of that before.

The consensus seems to be that I should give it another go then. The next class is tomorrow but I think I’ll leave it until next week after doing some online classes (just thought of that!) to practice the most dangerous positions first. Hopefully, armed with Windeze, the next session will be more peaceful Grin.

The position was lying on your back with left leg straight down on the mat, right one pulled over to touch that knee, then turning your body towards the left leg as far as you can go. I was frantically clenching all the way through but didn’t trust myself after that so sat the rest of it out Grin.

The first part of the pose (before the twist) is apanasana - wind relieving pose - it literally did what it was supposed to do!

Blimey 😳. She didn’t deliberately do it - do you think your attitude to farting might say more about you than other people when you read your response in comparison with everyone else’s?
CorianderBee · 22/08/2021 22:58

Farts at yoga are to be expected. A man once did one in my face while in DWFD. 😂 You just ignore it - natural part of yoga

BittaOrange · 22/08/2021 23:01

Good for you for going to Yoga, don’t let a fart put you off, everyone farts at Yoga sometimes 😳

Hankunamatata · 22/08/2021 23:04

Activated charcoal tablets are good for wind.

I stopped yoga as kept falling asleep at the end, every single time. They had to wake me. Totally embarrassing

Aww you shouldn’t stop going because of that, you must have needed the sleep and the teacher would be pleased that you got what you need out of the class
DelphineMarineaux · 23/08/2021 08:30

No, but she said it's likely to happen again because she's "naturally gassy". Maybe you don't mind inhaling fart gasses and smells in a Yoga class, but I think it's pretty disgusting.

do you think your attitude to farting might say more about you than other people when you read your response in comparison with everyone else’s?
I don't really care how people perceive my attitude to farts, most people have low standards anyway. In my world, farts are not natural, and not something you should accept in yourself or in others. You're not supposed to be gassy, it's actually a sign that something is wrong with your gut, or that you're eating wrong. And just like with any other medical issues or eating issues, it's something you should seek help for.

ineedsun · 23/08/2021 08:56

Okaay…

Except it’s not necessarily a sign of poor diet and nobody’s suggestion we go through life farting at will but if someone does one accidentally they don’t need to feel ashamed or embarrassed because literally everyone does it even if we usually only do it in private.

But, you know, it’s OK to feel the way you do, as long as you don’t go round making other people feel like shit for something they did accidentally.

Bryonyshcmyony · 23/08/2021 09:00

I don't go to classes because of other people farting. I know it's part of it but I hate it. I can think of loads of other things I'd rather do than be stuck on a mat next to someone farting constantly for 40 mins (happened last time I went, I mean poor woman but I was laying in a fug and it was horrible.

Bryonyshcmyony · 23/08/2021 09:02

I mean the odd one, yes I could handle but constantly? It was a busy class so no loss to them if I do at home instead, where the only farts are going to be from aged labrador.

ineedsun · 23/08/2021 09:08

@Bryonyshcmyony

Exactly! No ones forcing anyone to go, but it’s absolutely normal to accidentally let one go (in some poses more than others). If they’re doing it constantly that’s a different issue about respect but the odd one here and there is totally normal.
