AIBU to think ring bells are not unneighbourly?

Aibu to think ring door bells on a mid terrace are ok?

How do you protect a neighbour's privacy?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 21/08/2021 11:24

I hate them. I would be horrified if I was mid terrace and my neighbours had them.

I avoid taking parcels round to my neighbours now because they both have them (semis so far away though)

Thecathouse · 21/08/2021 11:30

Why would you be put off? The neighbour's are hardly going to keep the footage and if you are doing nothing wrong why panic about being on camera for 30 seconds?

I have anxiety, I use it to see who at the door so I can decide whether to answer it, take the dogs with me to answer it or ignore it.

Admittedly we are rural and on our own except for a cattle shed but the neighbour's, the postie, the oil delivery guys are all happy enough with it.

If anything it's a good thing to have them, there is now evidence you did take the parcel round of the neighbour tries to claim you didn't

Our neighbour's are happy because it means we have footage of any suspicious goings on which is important when you have expensive farm machinery and animals around the place

TheSloaneRanger · 21/08/2021 11:35

Why, what have your neighbours said?

Threearm · 21/08/2021 11:39

Neighbours on the left aren't happy.

I've blocked off their property on the zone thing but we've had a lot of issues with car break ins and burglaries over the past few months. Plus the family who have complained have had multiple police cars due to fights that have spilled out onto the road from theirs.

OP posts:
Funnylittlefloozie · 21/08/2021 11:39

You would not believe the number of offences, from minor to serious, that are prosecuted with evidence from neighbours' Ring doorbells. I think they're excellent, definitely have a deterrent effect on burglars, and are generally a Good Thing. Have your neighbours complained, OP, or are you the one who is not happy with your neighbours' doorbells/ cameras?

TheSloaneRanger · 21/08/2021 11:41

Ah OK, fuck 'em then

Lockheart · 21/08/2021 11:42

I couldn't even tell you what kind of doorbell my neighbours have - I really don't care or pay that much attention to their fixtures and fittings.

I can't see why having one would be a problem.

Ilikechips · 21/08/2021 11:44

We have one, we are in a semi and our neighbours who are attached clearly hate it. But they are also the ones who we’ve had to ring 999 on and the ones who are dodgy, if they weren’t doing anything dodgy they wouldn’t care.

GemmaRuby · 21/08/2021 11:44

“I can't see why having one would be a problem.”

Erm… because your neighbour is videoing you every time you come or go from your house?

I don’t like them personally, our neighbour has one and she uses it to pop out for a chat every time I’m struggling up the steps with the pram.

salooone · 21/08/2021 11:47

If you're camera captures images outside of your own property then you need to comply with data protection laws.

And? That's not illegal.

Lots of people have CCTV cameras on their houses if they've experienced problems with crime or antisocial behaviour before. That's not illegal either.

If you were deliberately using a camera to spy INTO a neighbours house, that's one thing? But a camera covering your front door / driveway / front garden is a non-issue.

OMG she comes out for a chat? Thats completely unacceptable , how dare she. I'd have to move 🙄
liveforsummer · 21/08/2021 11:48

My neighbour is a bit creepy. His door faces on to the garages and now he had a ring door bell he appears even more often to put out rubbish just as I go to get DC's bike etc.

grapewine · 21/08/2021 11:55

I'm getting one for security and personal protection. I give very little thought to what my neighbours think about it. Not that I imagine they'll mind. Lots of people have cameras up.

StoneofDestiny · 21/08/2021 11:58

Sounds like you need one with neighbours like that

Meggie2008 · 21/08/2021 11:59

I have one, I've blocked off the zone in front of my neighbours door so I can't see them coming in or out, but if they cross over my path to leave/come in instead of going down theirs, it will trigger the camera.
They don't mind, they know if anything happens it'll be picked up

GemmaRuby · 21/08/2021 12:00

@TheSloaneRanger
Well my neighbour’s chats generally consist of commenting on my baby’s skin colour, and telling me she just can’t understand why people hurt babies but it does happen so often.
So… I don’t really enjoy her watching for me to come out and then pouncing when I can’t make a polite but speedy exit.

gardeninggirl68 · 21/08/2021 12:00

They are a good invention and we should all have them

I belong to missing people forums and they have helped so many cases.

They also played a part with catching Sarah Everards murderer. Extreme, but he could still be out there without the footage from them

OoglyMoogly · 21/08/2021 12:02

I don’t like them personally, our neighbour has one and she uses it to pop out for a chat every time I’m struggling up the steps with the pram

That's friendly. No worse than spotting a friend through the window and popping out to say hi.

Unless you feel the need to move around in ninja mode or under the cover of darkness? Grin

OoglyMoogly · 21/08/2021 12:03

@GemmaRuby just seen your update. oh that's different.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2021 12:04

I have anxiety, I use it to see who at the door so I can decide whether to answer it, take the dogs with me to answer it or ignore it.

And being filmed like this by people I know makes me anxious. Your first paragraph is very dismissive of other people's personal concerns, especially if you have issues in certain circumstances yourself.

Basically spying on someone so you can pop out for a chat isn't friendly!
saraclara · 21/08/2021 12:08

My neighbours are nosy enough as it is. I absolutely do not want them passing comments about my every movement (as opposed to the just ones they see when they're looking out of the window)

Some of us live perfectly law-abiding lives, but like our privacy.

SmookleLaFaberge · 21/08/2021 12:08

We've just had one fitted. Sorry if people don't like them but we have a neighbour that can be quite abusive to other neighbours, so if I can have video proof of their aggressive behaviour then I will. Crime is also on the rise with virtually no police available to deal with it. I will not get rid of it when it will keep our road safer and hopefully keep our house insurance prices lower. Between a few of us neighbours, we have the road covered now.

EastWestWhosBest · 21/08/2021 12:11

But it wouldn’t be any different if she was sat at the front window or listening for the click of the door.

The problem there is the user, not the device itself.
