Aibu to think ring door bells on a mid terrace are ok?

How do you protect a neighbour's privacy?

@GemmaRuby

“I can't see why having one would be a problem.”

Erm… because your neighbour is videoing you every time you come or go from your house?

I don’t like them personally, our neighbour has one and she uses it to pop out for a chat every time I’m struggling up the steps with the pram.

Get her to help with the pram or carry some shopping up every time. She'll soon stop.

We aren't being un-neighborly by having a ring doorbell.

Our neighbor is un-neighborly by vandalising my fiance's car, painting on our windows, trashing the street and yelling outside all night, forcing us to invest in a ring doorbell.

It's a lovely close, full of nice families and kids, with just one lunatic who regularly needs police intervention.

We love our ring doorbell it's an excellent deterrent.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/08/2021 12:16

@Threearm

Neighbours on the left aren't happy.

I've blocked off their property on the zone thing but we've had a lot of issues with car break ins and burglaries over the past few months. Plus the family who have complained have had multiple police cars due to fights that have spilled out onto the road from theirs.

They're just pissed off that the Police could have some lovely video footage of their fights, so will either have to control themselves or risk it being played back to a court.
Ughmaybenot · 21/08/2021 12:16

Personally I’m of the opinion they can only really be a good thing. Handy if something untoward happens and it’s all been caught on camera.
I don’t really know why people are so bothered about being seen walking to or from their house.

Lockheart · 21/08/2021 12:20

@SoupDragon

Why would you be put off? The neighbour's are hardly going to keep the footage and if you are doing nothing wrong why panic about being on camera for 30 seconds?

I have anxiety, I use it to see who at the door so I can decide whether to answer it, take the dogs with me to answer it or ignore it.

And being filmed like this by people I know makes me anxious. Your first paragraph is very dismissive of other people's personal concerns, especially if you have issues in certain circumstances yourself.

The difference being @SoupDragon is that it's her home and she can fit a video doorbell to see who comes to her door if she so chooses.

It might make you anxious but your anxiety can't take precedence over someone doing something legal to their own home.

HalloHello · 21/08/2021 12:20

People who are up to no good won't like them because they're evidence of their badness! However normal folks would be unlikely to give it a 2nd thought in my opinion

saraclara · 21/08/2021 12:20

I have literally had "You go out rather a lot, don't you?" from my next door neighbours.

WTAF?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/08/2021 12:21

I am getting one. End of terrace. Afaik neigbours actually have a cctv. You can zone the video that it does not record neighbours going on about their business.

Your neigbours are just pissy because now there might be video evidence of the fights🤷🏻

pinkcircustop · 21/08/2021 12:23

We have one. I’m not bothered whether my neighbours like it or not 🤷‍♀️

StrangeToSee · 21/08/2021 12:32

I don’t think I’d install one mid terrace without neighbours agreement. Some people are funny about privacy and monitoring.
Even when it benefits them by protecting their door too!

Must admit the security camera mounted on my neighbours’ shed is a little unnerving when it tracks movement (eg when I’m gardening). But I’m sure they’re not interested in what I’m doing, they just want to protect whatever’s in the shed, so I’d never mention it.

iloverunningslow · 21/08/2021 12:34

After my relative's killer was successfully prosecuted using cctv footage I am entirely in favour of cctv being used anywhere legal (obviously not in stupid places like looking into other people's homes and in public toilets).
It later turned out the killer had made a habit of it and was a danger to any stranger who might cross his path, which made me even more thankful he's in prison where he belongs.

Thecathouse · 21/08/2021 12:36

This. I am not going to sacrifice my own comfort and safety on my own property in case a random person who passes my door is made anxious.

I'm sorry but me taking steps to reduce my own anxiety and also make sure we don't experience thefts - again on my property - is completely legal. I'm not responsible for other people's feelings on the matter, and I don't expect other people to change the things they do to their own homes to prevent my anxiety either.

I have complete empathy with you for this making you anxious, but as people with this issue we have to realise that the things that cause anxiety are not always logical and take steps to manage our reactions to these things without causing problems for those around us.

So they don't want you to have evidence of their carryons. Tough. Loads of people on our street have different types of cameras. Doesn't seem to bother the drug dealer over the road! It's not like they're filming you in your home, you can't really expect privacy while you're walking past your neighbours house.

"This." @Thecathouse "this" what? Confused

pleasekeeptotheright · 21/08/2021 12:46

My friends controlling husband uses their ring doorbell to make sure she doesn't get to speak alone with her friends for any length of time.

Wanker.

Sorry, my quote button doesn't seem to want to work, I did quote the post I was replying to honestly 😳
CovidPassQuestion · 21/08/2021 12:53

I'm with soupy on this. It's not just that you're being filmed on your own property, tracking all your comings and goings Hmm
That footage is also shared with Amazon, and stored, who knows for how long. So your facial image is now in their databanks, and data to Amazon means £££££, at your expense.
People should be entitled to privacy in their homes, not be at risk from being exploited in this way.

Ring doorbells in the US are now being joined up to make surveillance networks... how long until they do it in the UK too?

CovidPassQuestion · 21/08/2021 12:57

And of course, it's just Amazon that it's shared with atm, but then it's police and security services, and then it's hackers, who now know exactly when you're in or out of your home...

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/08/2021 12:58

Btw there are other brands than ring. One i am getting has set perimetr so it wouldn't record neigbours even if it actually saw into their front

StoneofDestiny · 21/08/2021 13:03

My neighbours have CCTV to cover their home but they mentioned it partly covered ours too - our driveway, cars etc. I was delighted - gives me extra security.

gardeninggirl68 · 21/08/2021 13:07

People get them and are a bit obsessed watching everything, but novelty soon wears off

Our neighbourhood groups have screenshots of people breaking into cars.... very clear pics too

LemonSwan · 21/08/2021 13:08

As of last week we are firmly in the pro-ringbell for neighbours camp!

Had an incident at our house and 3 neighbours came round to offer CCTV.

Without that we would have been screwed.

No we have all the evidence required for police and insurances.

A real blessing!!!

But they are irritating because they affect the wifi strength. When the neighbours first started putting them in a couple of years back we ended our net strength fell off a cliff. Man with the magic monitoring stick came round and explained its the bells fault. Quick fix though with a network of super boosters.

TDLR: So initially annoying, in the end bloody brilliant.

Horst · 21/08/2021 13:11

I wouldn’t care if my neighbours had one and wouldn’t remove my own for a neighbour either.

We have a cctv system and many a time the police have been given the footage to aid in their investigations which has helped put a few people behind bars. As long as it’s all legal they are fine.

MK19590 · 21/08/2021 13:14

DH and I have one because we both work long hours. I worry about the house when I'm not there and is also very useful to give instructions to delivery people if a parcel arrives and we're not in

SemiFeralDalek · 21/08/2021 13:22

We're mid terrace and are thinking of getting one. Neighbours both sides have them. And CCTV at the back on one side. I'd like this too.

We have Alexa upstairs and down so amazon know every time anyone farts in our house as it is Confused
