Aibu to think ring door bells on a mid terrace are ok?

How do you protect a neighbour's privacy?

@pleasekeeptotheright

My friends controlling husband uses their ring doorbell to make sure she doesn't get to speak alone with her friends for any length of time.

Wanker.

That's down to the wanker husband and not the ring doorbell
LolaButt · 21/08/2021 14:57

I have cameras, covering my own property only.

A neighbour has six, 360 degree swivel cameras mounted at height which cover my whole property and the two properties next door.

Apparently they were put up after an elderly gentleman the other side of me, asked them not to take his fence down. We’re now all under 24hr surveillance and have zero privacy. Neighbour is too scared of reprisals to go to the police about the cameras put up maliciously.

It’s this scenario I have a massive problem with. Not a neighbour who has a ring doorbell.

We have one and it wasn't until I got one that I realised how much video and sound is recorded and available to rewatch. I still have it but don't know how I feel about them now. We are mid terrace and neighbours are fine with it but I do think they're a massive invasion of privacy.

I'm been conscious when my friends come to the door and I'm having a chat to them not to say anything I don't want my dp to hear as he can dial in love without me knowing. As far as I know he hasn't but it freaks me out. I think they are possibly awful for women suffering controlling partners too.

Great for crime, not great for freedoms and privacy

Terminallysleepdeprived · 21/08/2021 15:04

I am mid terrace, I don't have a ring bell (although contemplating one) but I do have a blink camera above the front door. I have tried every which way to angle it so it protects my property and doesn't catch next door and couldn't. So I spoke to my neighbour, explained and she is over the moon it covers her house too. In fact all 3 external cameras cover both houses. My neighbour is blind and physically disabled also so it gives her massive piece of mind that they cover us both.

I don't get why anyone going about normal legal business would be bothered by them

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/08/2021 15:05

I know quite a people and houses with cctv. It's quite the same thing at the end of the day, but somehow people don't generally have issues with cctv as such.

CovidCorvid · 21/08/2021 15:05

Live in a “doors together” semi, we share a storm porch. Next door have a ring doorbell, doesn’t bother me at all. Him being able to see me come up to my front door is no different than if he was in his front garden and saw me coming to my front door. 🤷‍♀️ If the footage catches anyone dodgy on my property then that’s great.

Sexnotgender · 21/08/2021 15:13

Love ours, house has been broken into several times before we moved in. Had a number of people coming to the door looking for money too, the ring deters them.

Sn0tnose · 21/08/2021 15:23

A couple of our neighbours have them. I’m not too bothered about the surveillance aspect because the neighbours could just look out of their window, and I use Amazon, a mobile phone and I live in a town where cctv is on every corner, so there would be easier ways for hackers to see what I was doing and when. But they are just so bloody loud. The ring is loud, their visitors seem to think they need to shout at it to be heard and their voices come over the speaker like they’re sat next to me.

ChocAuVin · 21/08/2021 15:29

Our elderly neighbour has one and can see every time someone comes in or out of my front gate; to be honest, as a single woman with kids and a crazy ex, my main thought was, good! Nosy neighbour on the case is like my own personal security guard Grin

Magic1525 · 21/08/2021 15:43

A bench and chair was stolen from my front garden (also mid terrace) and the police said there isn’t even any point them coming out as I didn’t have a ring doorbell / cctv 🤷‍♀️

memberofthewedding · 21/08/2021 15:44

I have security cameras all around my house and yes - they have caught my NDN doing illegal things like flytipping on my garden. He found that out when I dropped a note with the thumbnails through his letter box and gave him 24 hours to clean it up before calling the police!

If they complain to me I will tell them they have my permission to move elsewhere. Several people in my street have very prominent CCTV,

LordOfTheThings · 21/08/2021 17:34

My neighbour wasn't happy when we had one fitted. He changed his tune v quickly when his house was broken into when he was on holiday came a knocking for the footage.

lannistunut · 21/08/2021 17:38

Well, I feel like I am quite conflicted on this issue as I find thema bit creepy, I would definitely hate being on one all the time in the terraced house scenario, but I can kind of see the use if you have a lot of ASB problems.

But overall, I am anti-surveillance so I'm not getting one.

AprilHeather · 21/08/2021 17:38

I don’t like the idea of being watched when I leave my house, causes me enough anxiety being out in public as it is!
But maybe they are useful deterrents for criminals ? Don’t know the figures in terms of if they do reduce crime or not

Nothing wrong if it’s all for the good of the Neighborhood

PrtScn · 25/08/2021 00:44

Don’t they get fixed to the outside of your house? So someone could nick it?

Justgivemeamoment · 25/08/2021 07:48

I get the positives but feel uncomfortable about the fact that it's Amazon who is storing the info. In our area there are lots of houses with very small front garden or no front garden at all so I'm always wondering how much they see and record when I walk past chatting to the kids. I'm not doing anything illegal but don't like to be recorded !

MindatWork · 25/08/2021 08:07

We have a eufy doorbell camera - similar to ring but a bit more impervious to hacking. We know someone who was broken into a couple of weeks ago and the burglars disabled their Ring doorbell with a wifi blocker Shock.

When we got ours installed it would start recording whenever it sensed any activity - I made DH change the settings as it freaked me out that he would be able to see me coming and going all the time.

Now it only goes off if someone rings the doorbell and we change the settings back when we’re out or away for any length of time.

Mintjulia · 25/08/2021 08:10

I too have a friend who uses his Ring to spy on his wife. He demands to know the identity of anyone who comes to the door, tracks how long she goes out for, listens into conversations etc.

We have code now for doorstep conversations. Smile He's such a creep.

onelittlefrog · 25/08/2021 08:20

OMG she comes out for a chat? Thats completely unacceptable , how dare she. I'd have to move 🙄

@TheSloaneRanger Sarcasm - the lowest form of wit, donchaknow.

Personally I would find it very annoying if my neighbour was on standby waiting for me so they could come out and talk whenever they saw me on camera.

Obviously it's fine if they just happen to be there and say hello, but this is invasive.

Agreed and I think that this actually would be illegal if you took it to the police.

I don't have a problem with ring doorbells used for their intended purpose.

Pottedpalm · 25/08/2021 08:22

@StrangeToSee

I don’t think I’d install one mid terrace without neighbours agreement. Some people are funny about privacy and monitoring. Even when it benefits them by protecting their door too!

Must admit the security camera mounted on my neighbours’ shed is a little unnerving when it tracks movement (eg when I’m gardening). But I’m sure they’re not interested in what I’m doing, they just want to protect whatever’s in the shed, so I’d never mention it.

I don’t think your neighbour can have the camera trained on your property. Isn’t this illegal?
billy1966 · 25/08/2021 08:31

We have cameras surrounding our house and the road on the advice of a policeman.

In his opinion a good camera system was a far greater deterrent than a security system as people ignore alarms.

He also suggested good windows and to make sure sheds and garages were always locked.

Burglars like to use your own tools and ladders to break into your house.

So much easier than bringing their own equipment!
