Spellings of names driving me insane

SimplyAmy1 · 18/08/2021 07:25

So, I was wondering if it’s just me…..

If your name is able to be spelt more than one way, for example Abi, would it annoy you if people spelt it Abby or Abbie even if you’ve signed me off an email/ text etc with the correct spelling?

So my name is Amy and it drives me crazy when people spell my name ‘Aimee’ or ‘Amey’
Once at work, I had a name badge on and the customers kept calling me a-my because of my name was ‘Amy’ it would be spelt a-me!

Another thing to add in, does/would it annoy you if you had a name that can be shortened eg- Abigail to Abi and people automatically started calling you abi even though you prefer and introduce yourself
and Abigail and vice versa?

Aibu or just easily annoyed 😂

I feel your pain. I have a traditional yet rarely used name and people spell it wrong all the time or call me something different. My DD has a name which is spelt correctly for the English version of the name, many people insist we are wrong and give the French version of the name. It's frustrating and lazy.

TheDudesmummy · 19/08/2021 23:38

What does annoy me is when people don't bother to use my full surname because it is two words, like de Niro or Del Rey. You would not say "Robert Niro", or "Lana Rey", so why leave off a whole piece of my name, especially as this then causes me to appear in alphabetical lists/filing systems in totally the wrong place, which can cause real problems.

Clumsyvolcano · 20/08/2021 01:18

I have never in my life heard anybody pronounce ‘Amy’ as A-my. Ever. I’m 31. Which weirdo does that!? 😂😂

Couchbettato · 20/08/2021 02:06

I'm a Betty, and it absolutely infuriates me when people call me Elizabeth. Because that's not my name!

Some people will do it to try and look smart, as in an "I know Betty is short for Elizabeth so I'm going to throw you a curve ball" sort of smug way.

But to be fair it makes them look like idiots.

Hesma · 20/08/2021 04:55

Honestly it doesn’t bother me in the slightest… more important stuff in my life to worry about. The only time I make a point is when I’m giving out my email address obvs

FakingMemories · 20/08/2021 05:46

Jorja? Who the heck spells it like that? It’s as bad as an eBay listing I once saw for a “gorjus dress”.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 20/08/2021 09:28

Jorja is a common name in the US and has been for over 200 years

Less common here but definitely not unheard of.
Nothing new-fangled about it. Grin

Bluesheep8 · 20/08/2021 10:02

*I think what annoys me is parents who spell their child’s name with an alternative spelling to be different.

🙄🙄🙄

Jorja
Sofie
Aimee
Maree*

Isn't Aimee the French spelling of Amy?
Actually I think it's a French name and that's the original spelling - Amy is just the Anglecised version of it

I've always thought it's a female version of Jorge, which is George in Spanish. Mispronouncing it as Georgia is probably more recent.
TheMoth · 20/08/2021 10:13

It's when you have 3 in the same class with the same name, but all spelt in various ways.

Eg
Nickkkla
Nicola
Nicholaaa

And yes, obviously, there are different language versions, but often it's parents who can't or won't spell the name properly.

topcat2014 · 20/08/2021 10:15

Sadly OP a lot of people are just thick

Brissiegirl · 20/08/2021 10:19

Growing up it use to bother me alot, I wouldn't answer to a shortened name, think of Val for Valerie type thing, but I'm ok with it now. I've enough other things to be bothered with 😀. I'd never do it to someone else though, always call them by name I've been introduced to them by

Irishmom7 · 20/08/2021 10:19

People spell my name as a collection of letters that make a different sound altogether. Sometimes they call me the closest word they can think of. It doesn’t bother me and I often find it funny. But I do hate it when people play on their phones in the cinema.

Mama1993 · 20/08/2021 10:35

I don't have an English name or a name that's very pronounceable to English people it gets misspelled all the time and it's really not that hard (five letters)

The worst is when I'm on the phone and spelling out my name to someone for them to then correct me on how to say it 'OH YOU MEAN...'

Ir doesn't annoy me really anymore as I'm very used to it and it's not a big deal. It's funny if anything as it's actually a very simple name that people seem to struggle immensely with Grin

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/08/2021 10:35

I'd love to have a name you can shorten. I don't understand understand why people get so worked up about it. I have the most boring name in the world (Clare) and I hate the fact that you can't do anything with

Knittingupastorm · 20/08/2021 10:46

I find it annoying. I have a name that can be spelled two ways, and my spelling the less common (but it’s not unique, or new, or “out there”, it’s just less common). When I reply to an email, I make sure to check the spelling of the person’s name, and it annoys me when an email comes back to me with the wrong spelling. My name is right there at the end of my email, and in my email address. Just check!

VanillaAndOrange · 20/08/2021 18:33

There are lots of possible spellings of my full first name and at least 2 ways of pronouncing it, of which the way my family always pronounced it is probably less common now. That's one of the reasons I usually go by a short form. My parents encouraged me to be fussy about the spelling, pronunciation and only being called by the short form they preferred, not any of the others. I went along with it for a long time, but I'm middle-aged now, my parents are dead and frankly it's rather liberating to be able to let people call me whatever the hell they like!

This may very well be right. After all, the Spaniards did go to the New World Grin

rothbury · 21/08/2021 11:50

I have a name that can be spelled a multitude of ways.

I couldn't care less how people spell it.

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 21/08/2021 11:54

I was in the pub last night and heard a member of staff tell a table that her sister's name is Margot, and she becomes incensed if people pronounce it properly with a silent 't', as she herself pronounces it 'Mar-GOT'.

Couldn't cope with that.

LindaEllen · 21/08/2021 12:26

It doesn't bother me when it happens day to day, like on Starbucks cups and the like. There are different ways of spelling things, and they're not psychic.

What DOES bother me is on social media, when someone is wishing me happy birthday, and puts 'Happy birthday Lynda!' when my profile that they've just actually clicked on quite clearly says 'Linda'.

Enko · 21/08/2021 13:28

@Awwlookatmybabyspider my name shortens to "Lon" its horrid fugly and I do NOT like it. So I dont answer to it and firmly tell people to not use it. Its hardly difficult to use the name preferred by the person. To me its just polite manners

NewlyGranny · 22/08/2021 13:15

Not Ophelia, Yourstupidity, think Cymbeline. 😉
