Spellings of names driving me insane

SimplyAmy1 · 18/08/2021 07:25

So, I was wondering if it’s just me…..

If your name is able to be spelt more than one way, for example Abi, would it annoy you if people spelt it Abby or Abbie even if you’ve signed me off an email/ text etc with the correct spelling?

So my name is Amy and it drives me crazy when people spell my name ‘Aimee’ or ‘Amey’
Once at work, I had a name badge on and the customers kept calling me a-my because of my name was ‘Amy’ it would be spelt a-me!

Another thing to add in, does/would it annoy you if you had a name that can be shortened eg- Abigail to Abi and people automatically started calling you abi even though you prefer and introduce yourself
and Abigail and vice versa?

Aibu or just easily annoyed 😂

it’s then the fact that they proceeded to tell me my name is spelt wrong

Yeah that’s just rude.

I had to ‘create’ an English pronunciation for my non-English name when I came to the UK, because half my university teachers insisted there was no way of properly pronouncing it Confused They didn’t even spend half a minute trying…

I had a teacher who used to mispronounce Helena, Laura and Luis - what I consider very normal names in a city like London. They taught us for 4 years too Blush

SimplyAmy1 · 18/08/2021 07:46

@KatyN I meant people address me by my SURNAME not my certain name 🙄

Is it the age of the other person - I''m an oldie and Amy was, I think in Little Women, I've always known it and can spell it. But I don't actually know anyone with the name so if younger people have never seen or heard it, only the modern variations, so Amy to them is spelled Aimee and anything else is an unusual foreign name hence A my.

TheRabbitStoleMyHat · 18/08/2021 07:50

I know an Amiee which I find a really odd spelling.

ComeonJulia · 18/08/2021 07:52

I am also called Amy and have had Aimee, Amie, Amee over the years.

I really don’t understand what is so difficult about Amy.

SimplyAmy1 · 18/08/2021 07:54

@ComeonJulia I even got called Amir once in an email but I’m gonna assume it was an autocorrect!

I know, our name literally has THREE LETTERS 😩😅

Standrewsschool · 18/08/2021 07:56

I think it’s fair enough to misspell once or twice, but once corrected it should be spelt correctly.

jelly79 · 18/08/2021 07:56

I spell my name to be asked 'are you sure??'

Erm yes!!!

Shade17 · 18/08/2021 07:57

There are at least 3 spellings of my first name, people get it wrong all the time especially colleagues offshore. I really couldn’t give a shit.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/08/2021 07:58

You think it would be the other way round. My sister is an Aimee and its often mistakenly spelt Amy
I'm a Clare and people often put the i in it which I don't mind so much. However I despise it when people spell it Clair.

SimplyAmy1 · 18/08/2021 07:58

@RichTeaTime I’m 26 and have fairly young parents, dads 50 and mums in her 40s. They spelt amy so it would be easier for me to learn and chose amy generally, so it couldn’t be shortened, the customers who insisted it should be pronounced A-my were maybe 40, 45? I just gave up in the end.
I know maybe 4 other Amy’s and all but one are spelt Amy. The other is spelt Aimee but she’s a little bit older. It’s crazy how many different ways one thing can be spelt! X

ElderflowerRose · 18/08/2021 08:00

My name is one that with one letter difference makes a completely different name. Different spelling, different pronunciation, different meaning.

Even people I’m fairly good friends with sometimes call me a different name Sad

I hate it!

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 18/08/2021 08:02

@KatyN

Yep. It annoys me. I find it strangest when they reply to an email where I clearly spelt my name Katy and they call me Katie.

Mine is also a shortening for Katherine (which is spelt randomly).

My children have really really easy to spell names. Which can’t be shortened.

I have the same name as you. I get so annoyed with Katie when I’ve signed off as Katy. Kate annoys me even more as it’s a completely different name. I find it disrespectful.
Terhou · 18/08/2021 08:02

People seem to have a compulsion to misspell names. I have a mildly unusual first name but I spell it the standard way, I get all sorts of variants on that. When I got married I took DH's surname partly because I was sick of having to spell out my birth name and his was, I thought, such a common name that no-one could mis-spell it. How very wrong I turned out to be.

GoodnightGrandma · 18/08/2021 08:04

People often pronounce my DS’s name wrong. It drives me mad but doesn’t bother him.
My married surname gets pronounced wrong often so I always correct them.

SimplyAmy1 · 18/08/2021 08:07

Another things that’s came into my head….
Stephen. People say my name is Stephen with a p,h- the proper way they say. Then if they shorten it to Steve, it’s spelt S-t-e-v-e but not Steven. My uncles name is Stephen and the only people he let’s call him Steve is my mum!

My dad knows a Stephen but he shortens his name to Steph and wants it pronounced like Steph 🤷🏻‍♀️ 🤯

TheDudesmummy · 18/08/2021 08:08

I use a shortened name of my name which can be spelled a number of ways, my spelling is less common than at least one of the others. Even people who know me quite well get it wrong, it doesn't bother me at all. It is only important that the full version of my name is correct on official docs etc.

manhattenrain · 18/08/2021 08:08

Amy is the most common spelling isn't it? What an odd customer.

@GorgonzolaSouffle
Other then Jorja, those aren't names that are spelt different to be unique, that's how they are spelt in different languages. Like how Isabelle is french, Isabel is Spanish, Isobel is Scottish.Smile

bigbluebus · 18/08/2021 08:09

My first name has 2 possible spellings so people have a 50% chance of getting it right. It doesn't bother me if they get it wrong as I know a number of others with the same name and find it hard to remember which spelling they use. I may roll my eyes slightly if they are replying to something that already has my name clearly written in it though.
I'm more bothered about the mispronunciation of my 6 letter, 2 syllable surname which is pronounced exactly as it is written and yet many people seem unable to say it. They add in an extra letter changing it to a completely different known surname or change the 2 middle letters for a different 2. It is as easy as for example catman - just say the 2 syllables - but I'd say 75% of people who don't know me say it incorrectly and those who say it right do so with hesitancy. It is a very English sounding name so not something that looks foreign either. I'm not really sure why people struggle with it.

NotMyCat · 18/08/2021 08:11

My name is always wrong from other people. There is a male and female version so say Samuel and Samantha. My surname is literally the easiest spelling in the world, think Smith

So instead of Samantha Smith I'll be sat there and they'll shout (doctors etc) "Samuel Smithy?"
And then wonder why I don't answer! A) I'm not male and b) that's not my name Angry

GintyMcGinty · 18/08/2021 08:25

I have a name that can be spelled in different ways. It doesn't bother me hugely. I just ignore most of the time.

I think it's a bit sloppy on behalf of the other person though. Especially in emails where the correct spelling is obvious in your email address.

Dacquoise · 18/08/2021 08:25

It's just one of those things that I am sure most people have to deal with.

I have had that with both my first name and surname. The surname bit is more annoying as I have found that I can spell it out to people and they still write it the way they think it is spelt. Also the pronounciation. I tell them my surname, they then repeat it back to me pronouncing it differently like I don't know how to say it!

I will change my surname at some stage to get rid of my married name (now divorced) but I am sure I will have the same issue. I had it with my maiden name too.

Levriers · 18/08/2021 08:31

Yes I always check & it irritates me if it’s on an email

My name can be spelled a number if ways - think Susanne/Suzanne

I emailed a lady called Carole - she spelled my name incorrectly so I replied to “Carol” interesting that she replied again getting my spelling right. Just sheer laziness

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/08/2021 08:35

I get this occasionally and have taken a decision not to be annoyed at it.

I think most people defer to the spelling they know ie they have a friend who goes by Abbie. So it's accidental.

stillcrazyafterall · 18/08/2021 08:38

I have a common name with pretty much the only spelling of it. My MIL (together 28 years) ALWAYS spells it wrong. So think Sharen instead of Sharon. I reckon it a p/a dig because she's been told numerous times.
