Spellings of names driving me insane

So, I was wondering if it’s just me…..

If your name is able to be spelt more than one way, for example Abi, would it annoy you if people spelt it Abby or Abbie even if you’ve signed me off an email/ text etc with the correct spelling?

So my name is Amy and it drives me crazy when people spell my name ‘Aimee’ or ‘Amey’
Once at work, I had a name badge on and the customers kept calling me a-my because of my name was ‘Amy’ it would be spelt a-me!

Another thing to add in, does/would it annoy you if you had a name that can be shortened eg- Abigail to Abi and people automatically started calling you abi even though you prefer and introduce yourself
and Abigail and vice versa?

Aibu or just easily annoyed 😂

As a person who uses her full name, which also has multiple spellings, I will raise my eyebrows at an email with a wrong or shortened version, or if one of my parents did it. But I can't get bothered if a restaurant uses another spelling. And I'll make an effort to try and spell a name properly if there's a way for me to check.
Automatic shortening I dislike as much because of the presumption of informality when there isn't any. But it's complicated and there may well be Rebeccas happy to be Bex to one person, but not others. If someone says please stick to Rebecca then I will make that effort.

I'm Kayleigh and I've grown up with it being spelt Kayley, Kayly, Kaylee, Kaylie, Kailey etc, and people mishearing and calling me Kelly, Keeley, Kylie, Kelsey, Hayley etc. Where I work now they constantly spell it Kayliegh...

My favourite though is when people see the signs for Keighley and point out there is a place near by called Kayleigh, had it too many times as both a child and an adult.

However none of it really bothers me.

Goshitstricky · 18/08/2021 12:51

I work in a place where someone is called Aymi (pronounced Amy) there is a lot of "unique" spellings of otherwise traditional names. It's tough.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 18/08/2021 12:51

It is annoying when people spell or pronounce your name wrong but as I have an Irish name I'm used to it.

The thing that really makes me laugh is when people say oh, you spell it the Irish way. Er... yes. It's an Irish name. Any other way is a made up way Wink

2bazookas · 18/08/2021 13:00

This is why we gave all our children classic old-fashioned names with zero alternative spellings, and never ever abbreviated them.

The ingrates cunningly lay in wait for decades until they had safely left home, and are now known professionally and socially by abbreviations. PAH.

Nothappyland · 18/08/2021 13:00

I WISH mine was spelt like yours, I’m an Amie and it’s so annoying! I changed my name (unofficially) to the Amy spelling for a while but it didn’t catch on unfortunately. I detested having sub teachers at school as I got called Annie during the register, and even Arnie. Getting your way wrong is just ridiculous. I would default to your way if I didn’t know, but tbh, I always check spellings, or ask if necessary.

Bentoforthehorde · 18/08/2021 13:11

Completely out myself but my name is Beverley and people spelling it wrong in emails/Facebook messages annoys me.
For a change from Bev I actually used the name Leigh (Lee) while I was at college.
For some reason over the phone people almost always hear Emily instead of Beverley.

DS1 has a name spelled in a way that riles people on mumsnet up, but it's German, like his surname (which most people can't pronounce) Grin and DS2 Would have had the German spelling too but his dad didn't like it.

DH and I have been married 5 years, together 3 years before that, very regular contact with my mum but DH still spells her (unusual but fairly straightforward) 6 letter name wrong! He just can't seem to get it.

MrsAvocet · 18/08/2021 13:35

My DD has a name with multiple possible spellings. I thought I'd chosen the simplest, most obvious spelling but it seems not. She's used to it now though and rarely bothers correcting people.
I do think it's disrespectful to shorten someone's name if that's not how they normally refer to themselves (or vice versa). Everyone in my DH's family shorten my name which I loathe, but I've given up trying. Though I know someone who dislikes their grandchild's name so much that they just use something different, which I think is incredibly rude.

MacSmirving · 18/08/2021 13:35

I have a Gaelic name (though the pronunciation is the same as the English version of my name) so the spelling is very unusual. I never get annoyed when people misspell my name - I would feel I was being a bit precious and self-important if I did.

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/08/2021 13:42

Just shows you how some people pay very little attention to others. Pig ignorant in my book.

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 18/08/2021 16:59

Also my full name is Eleanor and some people can't spell that correctly either. Eleanor, Elinor, Elena, Ellena - they go on. And when I use Eleanor it's on legal things so important it's spelled correctly.

I thought going by Elle would be easier, but it seems not. Another spelling I get often is Elles but I think I can blame auto correct for that one.

ChrissieSparks · 18/08/2021 17:20

My name is Christine.
Not exactly an unusual name.
In a predominantly Christian country, it's surprising how many people can't spell it.

My aunt spelt it Christene on my sixteenth birthday cake.

My BF (now husband) thought it was Kristy till I found out when he gave me a Christmas card a few weeks into the relationship.

Throw in the ones I can remember,
Chris
Chrissy
Chrissie
Kris
Krissy
Christina
Christy
Kristie
Kristine
Kirsty
Kissy
Tina

I suppose people can fail to hear you properly but how does that explain it when you wrote it.

CorianderBee · 18/08/2021 17:21

I have a top 10 name that has about 4/5 spellings.

I don't care if people misspell it tbh. Same name, and they're the ones looking stupid

aerosocks · 18/08/2021 17:30

@SimplyAmy1 Aimee and Amy are both equally legitimate spellings of your name, so I can understand people using either of those if they weren't sure which one you use. Bit like Alasdair and Alistair. Annoying when they get it wrong, but not bad spelling in itself.

Amey is the name of a large construction company.

WeAreTheHeroes · 18/08/2021 17:51

I guess a misspelling or mispronunciation of your actual name is marginally better than being called a completely different one! That's happened to me a few times. I was actually wearing a namebadge too.

tywysoges · 18/08/2021 18:15

I have the Iberian version of a classic name and don’t care if when it’s misspelled, but understand why other people might do. I do spell it for important/official stuff but work emails/Starbucks cups? Nah, it’s all good (though, unlike other people, I took a photo of my cup when they spelled it right Grin).

TitsalinaBumSquash · 18/08/2021 18:20

I have a very classical name but have always been known by the more masculine shorter version and I've no idea why my Mum never used the full version and she's no longer with us to ask (think Samantha and Sam) my work rota they always tell the customers they'll be seeing Samantha and then I show up and say "Hello, my name is Sam!" Smile and every time I get a "oh but Samantha is so lovely and you're not a boy!" so now I've changed it to,
"Hi, I'm Samantha, most people call me Sam but I answer to anything, lovey to meet you!"

I can't get het up about it, there is so much more in my to be pissed off about!

tegannotsovegan · 18/08/2021 18:44

People more often than not pronounce my name like how you'd typically pronounce "Megan" and it really winds me up. Even though I understand their logic behind it, it still pisses me off.

LoveFall · 18/08/2021 19:12

My name has two alternate spellings. I have now developed an irrational hate of the other spelling, i suspect because I am sick and tired of having my name spelt that way, even on official things.

I was also irrationally very annoyed with a man at a dinner party who announced that my name is spelled incorrectly and the alternate is the correct one. He was a Greek scholar and quite pompous about it.

Of corse my shortened nickname has several alternate spellings and it is rare I get the spelling I prefer. Even my daughter in law gets it wrong but I think that is because she uses Siri for texts and darn Siri is in on the misspelling!

BooomShakeTheRoom · 18/08/2021 19:18

My name's always spelt incorrectly. In some situations it bothers me (for example if work colleagues continue to misspell it despite me signing off with my name everytime - just look at my email below!). But most of the time it doesn't bother me.

Most people spell it wrong even when I spell it out. It's an English name but uncommon although the abbreviations are fairly common so people think they know how it's spelt when they never do.

Doesn't bother me when people shorten it although it would if I didn't like the shortened versions

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 18/08/2021 19:18

@LoveFall the siri misspellings are hilarious. That's when I get called Eilidh. At least on my phone now it tells me when a message has been sent with siri (my mum uses siri to text from her car so it's nice to know my own mother isn't actually spelling my name wrong).

LoveFall · 18/08/2021 19:19

And to add insult to injury my profession was male dominated. Most people call me by my shortened nickname and I used to answer the phone using it and my last name.

As my nickname could be used for a male I was constantly being asked to speak to "Mr LoveFall". It was quite difficult sometimes to get the message across that it was me, a woman, they wanted to talk to.

I stopped using my nickname professionally to get around that problem. It was weird explaining that the WAS Mr. LoveFall.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 18/08/2021 19:22

Let it go, let it go....

I have multiple name spelling but l couldn't give a toss.

Sinthie · 18/08/2021 19:25

I have an unusual name that is often mis-spelled/pronounced but I can’t be bothered to get annoyed about it. A security guard at work once mistook my surname for my first name for a while and I quite liked it 😆

CatRamsey · 18/08/2021 19:26

I really don't understand when people get it wrong when it's on an email or something right in front of them!

As for the second issue, this annoys me so much, my name just gets shortened to the first syllable and it annoys me when people do it especially when they don't really know me.

I knew someone who started shortening everyone's names in work. My friend Rebecca went by Becca but this other person kept calling her Becky and I had no idea who she was on about! She'd never been a Becky! Same with turning Charlotte into Charlie.
