Spellings of names driving me insane

So, I was wondering if it’s just me…..

If your name is able to be spelt more than one way, for example Abi, would it annoy you if people spelt it Abby or Abbie even if you’ve signed me off an email/ text etc with the correct spelling?

So my name is Amy and it drives me crazy when people spell my name ‘Aimee’ or ‘Amey’
Once at work, I had a name badge on and the customers kept calling me a-my because of my name was ‘Amy’ it would be spelt a-me!

Another thing to add in, does/would it annoy you if you had a name that can be shortened eg- Abigail to Abi and people automatically started calling you abi even though you prefer and introduce yourself
and Abigail and vice versa?

Aibu or just easily annoyed 😂

My daughters name is Esmé, but ALWAYS gets spelt Esme. It drives me mad, even at school it’s Esme. It’s not her name!! And people forever call her ESMEE! Even after hearing me continuously call her ESMAY!!!! Urgh don’t get me started.

Is that maybe because people are not familiar with how to do e accents on a keyboard/phone?
Killahangilion · 18/08/2021 10:26

At 13yrs old, I changed the spelling of my first name and added ‘ie’ to it so it was a bit different as another girl in my class had the same name. It wasn’t even a very common name such as Tracey and Sharon were at the time.

I’m still using the ‘ie’ 40 plus years later as it’s on all my legal documents inc. degree certs etc.

However, I’m used to telling people how to spell both my first and last names as my married surname seems to cause a lot of people problems, especially English people. Most Irish and Scottish people manage to get it right strangely enough!

I don't care at all when someone spells my name wrong, even if it's my own family

I would fnd it really disrespectful/uncaring tbh.

That they couldn't even bother to spell your name correctly.

I wouldn't be too bothered about the accent not being used, although presumably that indicates the pronunciation?

Although I've always thought that Esme was pronounced Esmay anyway.

My son has a ‘normal name with a normal spelling’ but still we get very strange spellings in cards and on invites! Confused he also has a name that I thought couldn’t be shortened, how wrong was I. Hmm

Our surname is not very common and some of the ways people say it are crazy it’s like they don’t actually look at the letters in it!

And finally don’t get me started on my name….I have a very common name for the time I was born that it gets shortened ALL the time! It does annoy me as I will introduce myself as long name and straight away I get ‘nice to meet you short name’! Angry. I hate the short version.

youdoyoutoday · 18/08/2021 11:45

People constantly get my name wrong especially the spelling including my nan, I can't be arsed anymore.

Musmerian · 18/08/2021 12:01

@GorgonzolaSouffle

I think what annoys me is parents who spell their child’s name with an alternative spelling to be different.

🙄🙄🙄

Jorja
Sofie
Aimee
Maree

Aimee is the French spelling and it is a French name.
Musmerian · 18/08/2021 12:05

My son is Freddy with a y. Impossible for people to manage. Particularly annoying at school and on Sports cups, certificates etc. He got so hacked off he’s changed it to Fred!

genome · 18/08/2021 12:10

I'm with you. I have a slightly different spelling of a common name. I understand completely if people spell it the usual way if I have not previously sent an email/message with the spelling. I get angry when people use the worng spelling in reply and increasingly annoyed when they do it repeatedly!

Enko · 18/08/2021 12:10

I get annoyed when people argue with me over how my name is meant to be said or spelled. I do t mind them getting it wrong the first time but ask if you are unsure.

I once had someone on the phone argue with me that I HAD to be male as my name was male (its unisex just happens yo be used more with males at the moment) I ended up demanding her manager who first tried to back her up. I was NOT impressed.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/08/2021 12:12

Re the accent. That's ome thing I am absolutely forgiving about. I have it in my surname

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 18/08/2021 12:14

Yes. My name is Elle and it annoys me no end when people spell it Ellie or worse, Eilidh (I'm Scottish so there's loads of Eilidh's around here)

x2boys · 18/08/2021 12:16

Is Aimee the french way of spelling the name?

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 18/08/2021 12:16

Someone thought your name was A-ME? Are they a moron?

I usually feel the spelling completely changes the name. To me Jackson and Jaxon are completely different names, just from the image it conjures in my head.

Same for Jenny/Jenny.
Abbie/Abi.
Amy/Ami.

MaMelon · 18/08/2021 12:17

Life is too short - I really couldn’t give AF. I have a very unusual surname snd if someone pronounced or spells it correctly I’m shocked. My first name can be spelled two ways, so I might be surprised if someone continues to spell it incorrectly, but meh.

Far too many names have ridiculous pronunciations or spellings these days - it’s hard to keep up.

Whilst I get what you are trying to say. (Don't spell unique for the sake of it) most of your suggestions are valid spellings

Sofie is more commonly spelled that way in Scandinavia however it's a valid spelling not even half unusual

Aimee is as already stated French and here Amy would have originally been the angalised version of the name

Maree is Irish and Latin and is related to Mary not Marie .

Jorja is a newer spelling of Georgia not a commonly used one. So likely the only one that makes your point.

I know people who have chosen unique spellings and I am not a fan. However I always ask if there is a reason for the spelling. Like dd2 is Eloisa not Eloise 2 different names from different variants so when I have had people suggest I was trying to "unique it" actually no we liked that name not Eloise. When I have asked I am often told it's due to x heritage so a reason for that spelling. I welcome that. I think we should embrace heritages

Not if it's an email conversation or such..

Enko · 18/08/2021 12:26

@x2boys

Amy is the English variation of the Old French name Amée—Aimée in modern French. Amée was a translation of the Latin name Amata, which derived from amatus, meaning "beloved." Other spelling variations include Amie and Ami.

Hillarious · 18/08/2021 12:28

Lyn, Lynn, Lynne, Lin. I'm quite relaxed and don't expect my name to be spelled correctly, except if I've just signed myself off in an e-mail. It's just poor form and lack of attention to detail if it's incorrectly used in a reply.

But having a name like this does make me more conscious about ensuring I get other people's names correct. I try very hard to get my friend's name - Philippa - correct.

However, expecting me to find the correct diacritic on a keyboard is just asking me to go the extra mile. I do for some people, but not all. I try my best though when writing by hand, but Francois will have his name spelled like that when I'm typing.

Enko · 18/08/2021 12:29

I sometimes gets names wrong but thats on me not the person with the name so I apologise and I aim to get it right the next time.

What I do not do is argue my way is better or correct. Or tell people how to say their name.. they are who they are even if I dislike the spelling / way of saying it

newnortherner111 · 18/08/2021 12:31

YANBU. That's why I will often reply to a thread about baby names suggesting the conventional spelling is used. Saves a lot of having to correct people, though no-one should ever have to be told twice.

Jaxhog · 18/08/2021 12:35

It only really annoys me if I've already emailed/texted etc. with the correct spelling. Can't people read?

My DH hates his name being shortened

Whatifitallgoesright · 18/08/2021 12:37

About 15yrs ago I had a temp job in a council allocating nursery places. I relished correcting 'mis-spelt' names in the decision letters. It was cheeky and wrong I know that now but I was a temp so.....
