to want to look older

54321nought · 16/08/2021 16:51

I am about to retire, and still getting mistaken for 30s/early 40s, and occasionally 20s.

This is not a good situation to be in, as people constantly misjudge me in all sorts of ways. I am nowhere near as strong as people expect me to be, and have far more professional experience.

I don't have any grey hair, and have never died my hair, but I am considering dying it grey before the new term

@Booboosweet

Everyone thinks they look young for their age. It's just vanity.
It's not vanity when you're 30 and still being IDd on a fairly regular basis!
Maireas · 16/08/2021 18:31

Well, @AngryWhompingWillow, I think that foundation is quite flattering...do I detect a hint of Botox?

Maireas · 16/08/2021 18:32

Being IDd doesn't mean people think you look young, it means they have to cover themselves and check.

AngryWhompingWillow · 16/08/2021 18:32

Grin LOL!
LizBennet · 16/08/2021 18:33

If you’re lighter skinned then I think, with the greatest of respect, that they are probably being polite.

Today I learned White Skinned people can’t look young 🤔

20s is a bit of a stretch isn’t it though OP 🤦🏼‍♀️

WorraLiberty · 16/08/2021 18:34

Yeah I think she peaked too soon with that one!

DrSbaitso · 16/08/2021 18:36

and occasionally 20s

They probably can't see you very well when you've jumped that high over the shark.

tattymacduff · 16/08/2021 18:39

You do look eggstremely youthful AngryWhompingWillow. What face cream do you use?

Clocktopus · 16/08/2021 18:39

I have EDS hypermobility type which means I have excess collagen. The plus side, youthful looking skin that doesn't tend to wrinkle. The downside, joints that are easily strained and dislocated (amongst other downsides).

I'm 40 and look around 5-10 years younger depending on whether or not I'm wearing make-up. My mum, also has EDS, is 57 and is the same. My dad, 60, doesn’t have EDS, is a stress head, and looks around 70.

Even with the advantage of all that extra collagen there is nobody who is going to mistake me for 18 or 21 or even 25 because this real life and not Totes Unplausible Land.

@Booboosweet

Everyone thinks they look young for their age. It's just vanity.

This. ^

If anyone is IDd for booze past their early 30s, the person serving them either has awful eyesight, OR they are terrible at telling peoples age. NO-ONE in their mid 30s looks under 18. NO-ONE.

In fact, nobody looks more than 7 to 8 years younger than their age. Maybe at first glance a FEW people look 12-15 years younger. But not when you look properly. When you look close up, the vast majority of people look their age within 7-8 years... in either direction.

@Clocktopus saying she can look 5 to 10 years younger depending on how well she does her make up is believable, but the 'I get mistaken for a generation younger' bollux some people spout on here is laughable!

People are deluded if they think they look like a teenager when they are in their mid 30s, or like they're in their 20s, when they are in their 40s.

Sorry to disappoint you, but virtually everyone looks their age. (As I say, within 7 or 8 years - in either direction.)

Funny how some people (on here) claim they look waaaaay younger than their age, but no-one ever claims people mistake them for looking much older. Wink

AngryWhompingWillow · 16/08/2021 18:47

Nothing from the OP since her first post. SHOCKER! Grin

FunnyWonder · 16/08/2021 18:49

@AngryWhompingWillow Pancake mix!! 😆😆

There's a small chance I might try it.

ValidUser · 16/08/2021 18:49

@AngryWhompingWillow

I'm in my 50s too.

Many people say I look way younger too.

I'm posting picture of me. Smile Don't look like a woman in my 50s do I? Smile

Amazing! 😂
LemonPeonies · 16/08/2021 18:51

Some of these replies are hilarious 🤣🤣. I'm 32 and do look younger, but only by about 5-7 years. I don't think anyone can look much more younger than their age.

Maireas · 16/08/2021 18:56

@AngryWhompingWillow - very, very true.
You can look in the mirror and think you look ok, or not bad for your age, possibly a few years younger, but no-one nearing retirement could ever be mistaken for 20 something.
A few years younger, maybe. Not more than 10.
Even people that have had Botox/work done.
Except me. I'm 61 and often get mistaken for a yr7 at school. Wink

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 16/08/2021 19:00

Yes Angry absolute correct, even Hollywood stars and celebrities with all their access to the best treatments etc. never look more than 10 years younger at best, for example Jennifer Anniston is 52 but could pass for 42, she could not pass for 32 and certainly not 22. If the stars can’t look decades younger no mere mortal can.

Maireas · 16/08/2021 19:03

True, Zara.
Sometimes I think I look ok for my age, then glance down at my hands which look like they belong to bloody Nosferatu.

MiaMarshmallows · 16/08/2021 19:04

Niece definitely looks a hell of a lot younger than she actually is. So yes. You can be mistaken for a teenager in your mid thirties as she is regularly. Same with that corrie actress, Tina O'brien. Read an interview with her and she still does as well even though she is 37/38. It's rare but certainly not impossible.

Maireas · 16/08/2021 19:08

No, Tina O'Brien has looked younger because she's played younger. She's good at acting young, and the clothes and make up help. She's pretty and youthful, but
I would say she definitely looks 30s.

MiaMarshmallows · 16/08/2021 19:12

Niece was asked if she was at uni the other day as well. I know people will say that they just assumed she was a mature student but I was there and they genuinely thought she was 18 and about to start a degree. Was awkward all round.

TheFoundations · 16/08/2021 19:15

I got asked for ID for cigarettes when I was in my 30s. They said if I wasn't under age, why was I in school uniform? I said 'It's Saturday, you bloody idiot, and I've got a suit jacket on for work!' I had to go to a different shop, still.

It is annoying, but it's a bit... well, childish, to concern yourself about it. Everybody gets misjudged sometimes, in one way or another. Those without the maturity to carry their own authority wisely get bothered by it. I wonder if people are mistaking you for young because you act it?
