To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

I think the trick is not to go too far as the worst part of a UK holiday is the drive. If it rains solidly after a long drive you'll feel very cheated.

We try and stay within a 2-3 hour drive of home. Within that time we can be in the Lakes, the Dales, the North York Moors, Peak District, Northumberland, Scottish borders or North Wales so plenty of choice of nice places.

dementedma · 09/08/2021 14:33

We've had amazing weather in Scotland for weeks, so guess were due a deluge or two. Supposed to pick up again in a few days though

Dogvmarmot · 09/08/2021 14:35

obviously a disappointment for most. Me - just home from horrid heatdome/heatwave/drought for over 2 months(35-47c) - fires all round, ash cloud rain, smoke and emergency bag and supplies packed for evacuation. Sadly in quarantine despite vaccines, but if not I would lay out in the rain for a solid week and be thrilled. I plan to go walking in the rain the second I am out. for hours until I am drenched.

Its a pleasure.

I'm sick of perma whinging and lack of realistic expectations.

It costs nothing to have an attitude to make the best of things and to understand that it rains in the UK.

Its not a budget related thing.

No one holds a gun to your head and says "you must sleep under canvas in the uk because you need to have a holiday".

Reality is you aren't getting the relaxing holiday you aspire to, if thats not your cup of tea and all you are doing is going away for the sake of saying you are going away.

Why put yourself through it?

Come up with an alternative plan.

Eustaciavile · 09/08/2021 14:46

Omg do people literally cancel holidays based on weather predictions 🤣🤣🤣

We’ve just come back from a week on the Solway coast. Lots of rain predicted, we only saw a drop or two, and had loads of sun.

As a mum of 4, i’ve seen plenty of rain over 25 years plus of holidays. Luckily me and my family don’t dissolve in the rain so have always managed to adapt and enjoy ( nb camping in the rain not included, that is hard :)

Toughen up people, it’s only rain.

lazylinguist · 09/08/2021 14:55

So yes all you lovelies, with your £££ Gore Tex jackets and lovely heated accommodation, and money to go to restaurants every day, for YOU there is no such thing as bad weather, but to those in tents and tiny caravans, I totally get that this holiday may suck, and I am not withholding my empathy and telling you to just “eat cake” instead

Sorry to spoil your chip-on-the-shoulder stereotyping, but we are of the cheerful 'No such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing' crowd, and we'll be in our tent in Wales and cooking over a camping stove next week, rain or shine, not curling up in front of a log fire in a luxury hideaway in the Cotswolds and going out to dinner every night!

SimonJT · 09/08/2021 15:00

It depends what your plans are and what you like doing, the rain doesn’t bother us so if it does rain we largely carry on with our plans. This week we’re having a little childfree break in the UK, we’re having the first and last night in our camper, the nights inbetween are at a little lodge in the cairngorms. It won’t bother us if it rains, is windy etc. But we do tend to plan things so bad weather won’t ruin what we’re doing.

LadyLaSnack · 09/08/2021 15:04

If you look at the weather apps it often looks like it's going to rain all day every day in Scotland, but in actual fact at this time of year it could just mean a few showers in amongst sunny spells.

RedToothBrush · 09/08/2021 15:04

I have to say I find this entire thread the equivalent of going to Spain and then complaining about people speaking spanish and serving spanish food.

BigPyjamas · 09/08/2021 15:22

I think there has to be an application of common sense here.

Yes, it's likely to rain at some point during a week long British holiday.

But also, a forecast that shows nothing but rain for 7 days is usually wrong.

We were away in Scotland last week, forecast showed nothing but rain clouds but it actually only rained heavily one day. Every other day we managed to get out and do things without getting wet, and on the rainy day we put on some coats and sheltered from the worst showers. Most days it was gloriously sunny and warm, and I was regretting not packing shorts.

Can't believe the poster who cancelled due to forecast of rain.

Hopeisallineed · 09/08/2021 15:27

I can’t believe you would cancel due to forecast either! I live in the Lakes and the forecast is invariably wrong. At the weekend we went out for the day to The Dales and it was supposed to be raining all day but of course it wasn’t, lots of lovely bright spells ( hot almost) and we just bobbed in to a cafe if it rained or sheltered for a minute. If we’d followed the forecast we would never have had such a nice day out.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 09/08/2021 15:30

@nokidshere

What a load of tosh being touted on this thread. I'm in Wiltshire and the rain right now is torrential. No sane person would say they would prefer this over a nice warm day with no rain.

Yes you can 'make the best of it' as I'm sure most people do but making do is what we do all year, it would be lovely to not have to do it on holiday too.

This. Absolutely this.

It's a holiday I want not an endurance test.

uktrippin · 09/08/2021 15:33

Can't imagine wanting to go to Wiltshire for my holidays tbh but it's glorious up North on the coast today.

No kids playing in rain on the beach here today. Because there's only sun and the occasional cloud. Lovely.

Just spoke to some holidaymakers about this thread and they said they were glad they'd never heard of MN 😂

Don't blame them!

Hopeisallineed · 09/08/2021 15:34

But it’s very rare it rains torrentially all day. Yes, I can understand that’s a pain if it’s like it all week but don’t think that really happens without some silver lining!

Hopeisallineed · 09/08/2021 15:35

That’s the great thing about having a camper van, follow the sun!

Imcatmum · 09/08/2021 15:37

@xksismybestletter

I agree. We were supposed to be going to Scotland and the weather is wall to wall rain every single day. We've not gone.
I'm in Scotland. We had a good day yesterday. Pleasant enough for hiking without a coat. And today is glorious. Spent the day on the beach and needed lots of sunscreen.
BoredZelda · 09/08/2021 15:39

One of DD’s best memories during the lockdown was when we had been inside all day and I just needed to get out. We went for a walk that night in torrential rain and jumped in puddles. We were soaked but it was great fun.

Living in Scotland, you soon learn not to let rain stop play. We’ve had holidays in the U.K. for years and rain or shine, it never stopped us.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/08/2021 15:41

Parts of Wiltshire are beautiful as is a lot of the West Country.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 09/08/2021 15:41

No such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing

Clearly nobody that thinks this has experienced hurricane force winds.

Ain't no clothes that transform that into 'not bad weather'.

But I would rather be in the UK and experience rain than in the several places that are currently
or have recently been suffering wildfires.

uktrippin · 09/08/2021 15:45

"Parts of Wiltshire are beautiful as is a lot of the West Country."

Yes, agreed but fleetingly for me. We didn't find enough there to make us want to fill more than a day or two. Nice for a weekend I suppose.

DottyHarmer · 09/08/2021 16:00

The thing is it’s not just a few showers and then the sun comes out. At the moment here the rain has soaked everything, such that the grass is bog-like, footpaths are quagmires and it’s impossible to sit down on a bench/tree trunk without the wet penetrating to your pants.

I am perfectly accepting of a few days of bad weather, but a whole week is very disappointing. At home, who cares, but if you have shelled out ££££ it must rankle.

One of the things about the british weather is it rarely rains ALL day and ALL night for a week. Whereever you are in the country.

You will get dry spells for part of the day or breaks in the weather. You can make the most of things this way if nothing else.

Round my neck of the woods it tends to rain before 8am and then stops until the afternoon, there may be a shower, and then its ok for the rest of the afternoon, before raining in the evening. DH used to cycle to and from Manchester and found it was rare, even in winter for it to rain during his commuting hours because of the natural weather patterns and despite Manchester's reputation for rain (and actual daily rainfall records).

The forecasts aren't that accurate, but I do find them better than they used to be and the % chance of rain by the hour is a pretty useful tool for knowing which day in the coming week is most likely to be a complete right off and which day might be better for a morning outing etc.

Which hurricane force winds in August in the UK were these?
mbosnz · 09/08/2021 16:11

I must say, there's nothing quite like a British summer. It's a real experience! Grin

Reckon cars could have thought of towing a water ski or a biscuit outside my bedroom window. And definitely don't need to go down to the local wildswimming lake here to kayak. . . every cloud. . . silver lining!
