If it’s that bad, why aren’t we panicking more??

Climate change.
I keep reading posts about it and it’s scaring the crap out of me for my DD’s future.
How bad is it? Anyone have any positivity about it?

Read uninhabitable earth.
It is that bad.

lannistunut · 07/08/2021 21:01

It is really, really bad.

We are not panicking more because humans are not always good at processing extreme risk, or dealing with our utter lack of control.

The fact the government is opening up more fossil fuel projects is making me feel both furious and completely powerless.

goose1964 · 07/08/2021 21:01

We need to move on from the way were living now to one that allows us to mitigate the worst effects. The Pacific North West has had the highest temperatures recorded this year.

CarlottaValdez · 07/08/2021 21:01

I don’t know. I have days where I feel like everything is going to go to shit and I think why am I paying into a pension for example. But what’s the alternative I do what I can, I vote for reform and I get on with my life.

lannistunut · 07/08/2021 21:04

@Nightgardenisodd

All evidence shows that doing something about climate change reduces the feelings of impotence and worry - so make changes in your own life and do some campaigning even if just writing to your MP to say this is the biggest issue for you.

We have made a lot of changes in our life, and our family carbon footprint is now really quite a lot lower (and well below the target for a UK family).

PlanDeRaccordement · 07/08/2021 21:04

It’s not that bad. It’s been worse. Things have been improving for past sixty years or more. But humans always need something to doomsay about to whip up fear in the populace to back various political or social movements. Climate change is just the latest fad.

BrozTito · 07/08/2021 21:04

Boiling, arrogant frogs

Globaluser · 07/08/2021 21:06

The people on this planet are selfish, unkind, and just absolutely awful; therefore the world is broken! My heart weeps for it and the children that live on it!

LakieLady · 07/08/2021 21:07

I think it's really, really bad. It makes me glad I'm 66 and will hopefully not be around to see the worst of it.

This is really alarming

It seems clear that we will see significant and disruptive changes. The only question seems to be when.

Interesting. How was it worse 100 years ago?
PlanDeRaccordement · 07/08/2021 21:14

How was it worse in 1921?

  • Raw sewage in most of worlds water sources...yum yum
  • No waste removal for rubbish...just heaps rotting outside every town
-coal fired power plants causing acid rain killing entire lakes and rivers
  • polluted air killed millions more than now such that even London still had killer fogs on a regular basis.
  • deforestation was at its peak world wide
  • world starvation and poverty was much higher than now
-infant/child mortality far worse
HasaDigaEebowai · 07/08/2021 21:17

Its very very bad.

PlanDeRaccordament is a climate change denier who thinks it’s all a big conspiracy to help the rich so is take everything they say with a mountain of salt.

This may all be true but has bugger all to do with the climate change impacts we face in the future which is going to make that lot look like a walk in the park.

This type of 'rationalisation' which is in fact denial is a sign of not being able to mentally cope with the reality of climate change.

Theworldisfullofgs · 07/08/2021 21:20

It is that bad. We need big companies to change what they are doing and we need to do our bit too. Less flying etc.
We need a different economic model going forward to support this i.e taxing model change and for large companies to pay their bit and for people to not think its a fad.

CarlottaValdez · 07/08/2021 21:22

I think where I feel it’s impossible is looking at China and Russia.

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/08/2021 21:24

Deflecting by pointing to other countries doesn’t help. We need to be leading the way in this not sitting back and saying there’s no point doing anything because of other countries.

I’m not a climate change denier or a conspiracy theorist.

I have said multiple times climate change exists. It has always existed. It cannot be stopped. Look at the geology of the planet. Seas move. Continents move. Weather changes. The planet was warmer during the fucking Bronze Age than it is now. You are all panicking over a completely natural phenomenon and are brainwashed into thinking humans have caused climate change. We haven’t. We’ve only barely nudged it. Not enough to kill us or all life as the doomsayers and fear mongers would have you believe.

PlanDeRaccordement · 07/08/2021 21:27

Really? So fossil fuels have fuck all to do with climate change according to you. You deviating from the party line.

WallaceinAnderland · 07/08/2021 21:27

It's so bad that even the scientists are scared now. The things they predicted are happening sooner than they thought.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/08/2021 21:28

I like many feel reluctant to change our personal lifestyles when you see India, China and Russia do what suits them- we’re fucked anyway

burritofan · 07/08/2021 21:29

It’s fucking terrifying. I do believe that, though we’ve passed many points of no return, we haven’t yet hit THE tipping point – there’s still hope. Unfortunately it relies on massive, life-changing, sweeping legislation and change that I don’t think our fool of a government will ever enact, or our societies will ever go along with.

frumpety · 07/08/2021 21:29

A lot depends where you live , there are a few places including a lot of the SE where I would be nervous about getting a mortgage over the 15 yr mark.

LaMariposa · 07/08/2021 21:29

I’m full of anxiety over this. I feel hopeless and worried for my children. When I look at big economies like China, Russia, and the destruction of the Amazon I honestly wonder where this world will be.
Things that comfort me...
Doing bits that I can to help. Setting up a wildlife garden, growing stuff, living in as eco friendly way as I can.
The fact I’m not alone feeling this way. There’s a lot of people doing their best to stop climate change, and it’s becoming more mainstream.
Trying to enjoy the little things each day.
The knowledge that we all die, whatever happens. The earth, and life in some form, will survive even if we don’t. Which is a bit a of weird comfort but there you go.

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/08/2021 21:33

I’m full of anxiety over this.

Try not to feel too anxious. The more you do to minimise your own carbon footprint and the more it becomes normalised to prioritise this, the more hope there is.

Retrievemysanity · 07/08/2021 21:34

It’s awful. No positivity about it unfortunately. But what good will panicking do about it?
