I wonder if all the controversy around Laurel's participation led to her losing her nerve?

@drum123

pumper, I know a man who is the same height as me, the same weight as me and pretty much the same proportion as me. He exercises about the same amount as I do, and is the same age. He can beat me in any race, and is stronger than me. Why? Because his male physique is naturally stronger than mine. And while we're talking about Serena Williams, she and Novak Djokovic are almost the same height and weight. They would probably be in the same category according to your rules. He'd win though. She wouldn't stand a chance.
Djokovic is 6ft2. Williams is 5ft9.
Is lung capacity considered a category currently?

Menstruation could be dealt with exactly the same way as it is now: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.independent.co.uk/life-style/women/tokyo-olympics-female-athletes-period-b1892748.html%3famp
What about this article are you pointing out?

That females should what, go on birth control to try to reduce the affects of menstrual cycles? And if that doesn’t work? Having spent 3 decades trying to ‘control’ my menstruation, I can assure you the results are unreliable.

So, a female has to monitor menstruaton and may have less training opportunities than males. And this is not just an advantage for a male competing in that same category ?

You are having a laugh aren’t you?

Pumperthepumper · 02/08/2021 20:55

My point was, they already don’t make allowances for menstruation. So your argument about that being a factor in changing the categories doesn’t work, because it’s currently not happening anyway.

Helleofabore · 02/08/2021 20:59

Why would they be competing against mediocre males in a proportion category instead of people who deserve to be there?

Because we know from looking at numbers and records that the males will dominate just about every category. You just choose not to see it.

You have not once suggested how to mitigate the physical advantages that males have over females within the exact same height and weight category. The muscle ratio to fat even will have an impact.

Enough4me · 02/08/2021 21:02

When men can be genetically changed from XY to XX in every single cell and development reversed to represent their development had they grown as XX, then they can fairly compete as XX against other XXs.

Can't happen can it, crazy eh, well let's just pretend men can be women and no one will notice?

So separate them by muscle ratio to fat!

You seem to be under the impression I work for the Olympic committee. I don’t. I was hoping to have a grown up discussion about the future of the Olympics when we take into account the finite nature of the world record, the increasing number of elite athletes plus the introduction of new and unusual sports.

Waspsarearseholes · 02/08/2021 21:03

@Pumperthepumper - your ridiculously complex system of measuring each athlete and categorising them based on inside leg measurement, little finger length and distance between the eyes doesn't 'open' anything up. It severely reduces the number of athletes in each competition. Imagine if you are the only athlete In your height/weight category, or there's only three of you. Each would end up with a medal for just turning up. Who do you think would want to watch 30 plus versions of each category doing the same race? Here is the 100m race for those with a stride between 150 and 156cm and weigh under 67kg. Here's the 100m race for athletes with a stride between 157 and 163cm and weigh under 72kg. Seriously? You think this will improve athletics? You also appear to be completely ignorant of the physiological differences between men and women. It really sounds as though you're just typing whatever nonsense comes into your head without giving it any thought whatsoever.

When sports are sex segregated, menstruation issues are made as fair as they can be. Unless you actually think adding men to the mix would make no difference.

But I don't think you do.

Helleofabore · 02/08/2021 21:05

Because when a female competes with a female, it is likely that they will have had the disadvantage of loss of training, injury risk and competition day menstrual issues.

Males will never had that disadvantage. So they may be able to train intensively in the 3 months leading up to something like the Olympics, or just never had to miss anywhere near as many as a female.

NiceGerbil · 02/08/2021 21:07

'Pumperthepumper

@Helleofabore height plus speed categories? Weight plus stride length?

And hips?

How do you account for the difference in how female pelvis’s are wider with less stability, and less efficient gait?

Any ideas?'

I think you'll find that nowadays plenty of women don't struggle with those natural impediments that traditionally has meant women were physically inferior.

It's great news!

Jesus. Why would it be thirty plus categories? Why not, say, three? The tall, the midsize, the short. Three of each. They have to have three inches between their eyes (five for midsize, eight for short) and a little finger of 4,6 or 9 inches.

I do think it would improve not just athletics but the Olympics overall. It would stop the race to the records and show talent in each category- think of the variation we could introduce if we weren’t just chasing speed.

HermioneWeasley · 02/08/2021 21:07

Not surprised in the slightest. I knew Laurel couldn’t be allowed to win a medal, Laurel had to make it look difficult so that the TRAs can say there’s no advantage in being male.

Most Olympic athletes when they crash out are devastated. They don’t laugh and smirk.

Absolutely vile.

And if they don’t menstruate? If they’re underweight and their periods stopped? Less of a woman?

‘Pumper’ is a breast pump. Feel free to look me up, ‘Dr’.
DrSbaitso · 02/08/2021 21:10

The tall, the midsize, the short.

As a man, Hubbard would have had to compete in a weight class that doesn't exist for women.

So, have you actually read any studies on this issue?

You are being ridiculous to suggest I am under any impression that you work for the Olympic committee. If you wanted to have a grown up discussion, supporting your alternative model with something more than very simplistic suggestions completely ignoring published facts and statistics would be the start surely?

Enough4me · 02/08/2021 21:13

Competitive levels can start at the chromosome level.
Laurel = XY - nope, not a woman.

DrSbaitso · 02/08/2021 21:13

Bloody hell. The Olympics isn't a summer fete talent show where everybody gets to have their turn and win a badge. It's the world's most elite athletes. You disapprove of them 'racing to the records' and 'chasing speed' when they have literally trained their whole lives to be the best/fastest they can be? You think, instead, the Olympics should be a celebration of mediocrity where everyone should be encouraged to have a go? Your posts get more bizarre and make less sense every time.

Mandalay246 · 02/08/2021 21:13

I imagine all the controversy around Laurel's selection did play some part. How do you think the rest of you would perform if random strangers felt it their "right" to come on social media and tear you to shreds?

I have, yes. Which is why I know that’s the way the world is turning. I think you might be in for a surprise if this is the first you’ve heard of it.
