Does anyone still cook a weekly roast on Sunday?

Does anyone still do this? Just pondering what to prepare today and am quite fancying a curry! Do you cook (or go out for) a traditional roast dinner on a Sunday?

@Inextremis That sounds like my kind of thing. I'd happily do a Saturday roast with friends.

Toomuchtodoo · 01/08/2021 13:21

We do most Sundays. I'm about to eat one now.
I don't always like how it cuts into the day, but I love the taste.

ODFOx · 01/08/2021 13:25

I love a roast!
We have one most Sunday's but try to mix it up a bit so it isn't too samey.
Today it's a full on roast beef with Yorkshire's and all the trimmings but other times I may do a slow cooked marinated lamb leg in a Greek or north African style with traditional accompaniments, or aMN style whole tandoori style roast chicken with Bombay potatoes and side dishes.
DS loves roast pork with crackling best. DH loves lamb.

DD likes them all but will complain about them all.
My favourite Sunday roast is chicken, with sage and onion stuffing, chipolatas, roast and mashed potatoes, lots of veg and gravy. So good!

snowone · 01/08/2021 13:28

Pretty much - normally roast chicken if I can't be bothered faffing and roast lamb if I can. Love a roast dinner

garlictwist · 01/08/2021 13:29

No never. We used to have one every Sunday growing up and it was such a drag. Sundays should be for chilling out with no plan and just eating snacks in my opinion.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 01/08/2021 13:29

Every week without fail and never for less than 6 of us. Today there is 9 and we are having beef, lamb and chicken.

JulieChastened · 01/08/2021 13:34

We normally do two roasts a week - chicken, pork or gammon joint. I can get a second meal out of the left-over meat - usually served with jacket potatoes, or a curry, or mixed into a couple of packs of Batchelor's savoury rice. The cheaper meats we used to eat - burgers and mince - have gone up so much they're not cheaper any more.

We do a roast every Sunday and did growing up. It’s nice not having to think of another dinner idea and we use leftover meat for Monday’s dinner so don’t need to cook much then.

MyOtherProfile · 01/08/2021 13:38

Roast here most Sundays. Tradition innit?

Peace43 · 01/08/2021 13:38

No but I love a roast dinner. Sometimes do one on a Wednesday in the winter when my boyfriend is over.

dottiedodah · 01/08/2021 13:47

Usually ,although when DC were very small, and now as well .Will move Roast to a Tuesday evening if we are going to the Beach or New Forest for example .ATM I like those Chickens in a bag .No fuss or mess Cooks cleanly!

YanTanTethera123 · 01/08/2021 13:48

Only if I feel like doing one.
Today we had slow roasted beef short ribs, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, home grown green bean, baby sweet corn and sugar-snap peas with gravy and horseradish sauce. Homemade creme caramel for pudding.
Enough veg etc left over for tomorrow’s lunch with baked gammon 😋

angieloumc · 01/08/2021 13:50

I nearly always do a Sunday roast. I still make far too much as well even though it's now just me and DD 16. She has a part time job now in retail in Leeds so now we have it at about 6pm instead of mid afternoon.

DahliaBlue · 01/08/2021 13:52

Yes except when it's too hot. Beef today.

Manzanilla55 · 01/08/2021 14:03

English food is the worst. Nothing special about a roast.

if you have to hide the meat under gravy, there's a reason... so you do have some kind of point!
eightyfourandahalf · 01/08/2021 14:14

I honestly can't imagine my kids face if I told them we are stuck home on Sundays because it's roast day Grin

Why comment just to be a dick?
RosesAndHellebores · 01/08/2021 14:18

I am sorry @Manzanilla55 but if you say that I don't think you have ever had a well cooked roast.

Double rib of well hung Scottish beef, seasoned well with salt, pepper, mustard powder to form a sizzling delicate crust.
Yorkshire pudding
Crisp, fluffy roast potatoes,
Carrots gently cooked in a closed dish in the oven with a know of butter and tsp of water
Purple sprouting brocoli
Red wine and onion gravy
Horseradish

Leg of Welsh spring lamb dotted with garlic and rosemary
Crisp, fluffy roast potatoes
Mange tout and peas
Carrots or beans
Leeks in garlic sauce
Gravy with red wine and a smidgeon of redcurrant

Pork loin with crunchy crackling (from an animal that has roamed free and whose flesh is infused with fallen apples)
Crisp, fluffy toasties
Savoy cabbage
Roasted leek and carrot
Cider gravy
Bramley apple sauce

Corn fed, free range chicken
Stuffed with sausage meat, sage and onion
The obligatory roast potatoes
Bread sauce and cranberry sauce
Peas, beans, courgettes
White wine gravy (not too thick with poultry).

you have to admit that "English food" is not really a selling point for restaurants worldwide.

eightyfourandahalf · 01/08/2021 14:19

Sounds great RosesAndHellebores
but it also answer the question to the poster above who wondered why people thought as a roast diner as a lot of faff.

Ha, I was going to comment similar.

There's a reason you don't see British restaurants anywhere outside of Britain, lol.

You don't have to be stuck at home though it doesn't take that long to make.
RosesAndHellebores · 01/08/2021 14:25

There's English food and English food:

Steak and kidney pudding and pies are richly unctious

Chicken and ham pie is divine

Pork and game pies with the jelly quivering inside.

Endless game dishes: pigeon, venison, rabbit, pheasant, hare, grouse, etc.

Strawberries, raspberries and endless fruit pies and puddings

Lamb stews and hot pots along with so many other braises, casseroles and stews.

Scottish salmon
Shellfish: crabs, mussels, cockles, whelks

And let's not forget: fresh fruit and vegetables.

HidingBehindYetAnotherName · 01/08/2021 14:25

No, it doesn’t take any longer than cooking a curry from scratch, for example. It can easily be done after a day out, especially in the dark winter evenings.
