Does anyone still cook a weekly roast on Sunday?

Does anyone still do this? Just pondering what to prepare today and am quite fancying a curry! Do you cook (or go out for) a traditional roast dinner on a Sunday?

We normally do unless it's really hot when we'll have a bbq instead.

We're not having one today, because I'm having gallbladder surgery on Tuesday and the hospital put me on a special diet to shrink my liver. Well not special....fecking Slimfast for 2 weeks (except its been delayed so was nearly 3). I hate slimfast!

WildBurd · 01/08/2021 11:07

I do unless it's boiling hot or we're out.

Just doing chicken today. PP is right about red meat joints, I wouldn't buy lamb every week. Can't believe how expensive it is these days. Double the cost of a chicken.

Good luck! I had my GB out last year and it's the best thing ever!

AuntieMarys · 01/08/2021 11:08

Never. I'm in my 60s and have never done one. Or Xmas Dinner.

dementedma · 01/08/2021 11:10

No. Too much hassle

Pedalpushers · 01/08/2021 11:11

Not in the summer, I do them quite often in the winter. I do try and do something 'different' on a Sunday though.

Jmaho · 01/08/2021 11:12

I do generally for ease. I hate meal planning and know that a roast chicken on a Sunday (occasionally we have a different meat) will be eaten by everyone, with a few tweaks for the fussy ones. I buy a large chicken and it means we have enough meat left over for a couple of days of sandwiches/rolls for the children as roast chicken is their preferred filling. It also pleases the dog

Nsky · 01/08/2021 11:15

Not often, tho I do like a roast

Newnamefor2021 · 01/08/2021 11:16

My parents do and we go over week. In lockdown we usually did a weekly roast but not always on a Sunday.

eightyfourandahalf · 01/08/2021 11:16

My own mum never bothered, and only cooked roast when she felt like it, so I am the same.

Sunday is the worst day for any cooking, it's the day when we don't have to be home.

PumpkinPie2016 · 01/08/2021 11:16

Not every week - we do enjoy a roast so I do make them sometimes. More so in Autumn/Winter. There are only 3 of us (4 when MIL joins us) so generally, there is enough left over for the following day which is good as it's one less meal to think about Grin

If it's a particular busy week or very hot weather we have something else.

On holiday at the moment so going out for a roast today Grin

KurtWilde · 01/08/2021 11:19

I tend to do a roast during autumn/winter. Occasionally during spring if it's still chilly and we want something substantial.

My mum used to make one week in week out no matter if it was scorching outside! The house would be sweltering with the oven on all day!

Funnylittlefloozie · 01/08/2021 11:19

We normally have a roast on a Sunday- DP loves it, and cooking is my hobby,so it works for both of us. We're NOT doing it this week, though we're still having a joint. I'm doing a slow-roast pork shoulder, Chinese style, and we'll have it with pak choi and rice.

Rosebel · 01/08/2021 11:19

Every week without fail. It's one of the few things everyone else enjoys and eats.
I find it a real pain to do a roast and never feel like eating it by the time I've made it.
If someone else makes it I love it.

VeganVeal · 01/08/2021 11:20

We do but only because cook does it. She makes a wonderful roast dinner

ForeverInADay · 01/08/2021 11:21

Every Sunday. One of the only meals everyone likes. It is a pain if we have other plans though and we have to 'negotiate' having it on Saturday or Monday instead with my youngest who once cried when he got out of the bath on Sunday afternoon and his roast wasn't almost ready 'like normal'. Shock

It does feel like a bit of a family tradition now!

SquirryTheSquirrel · 01/08/2021 11:21

Yes, I almost always do unless it's sweltering hot.

Not wanting to invoke The Mumsnet Chicken Grin but there's just me and DH so the roast leftovers will do at least two other meals on Monday/Tuesday so it's cost-effective and convenient.

WorraLiberty · 01/08/2021 11:22

Every single Sunday no matter what the weather, my DH cooks a roast.

Apart from last week. It was his birthday so we went out for a family meal.

I came home from work the following day to a 'Monday roast' instead Grin

HidingBehindYetAnotherName · 01/08/2021 11:23

Almost always.

FiveShelties · 01/08/2021 11:24

We have just had Roast Chicken for dinner, with roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. I don't do it every week and only during late Autumn/ Winter when it is cold. We are in NZ so winter here and a roast Sunday dinner goes down a treat. I will never get used to winter in June/July and August.

LFQuery · 01/08/2021 11:25

@Haybo26

Yes, come rain or shine. Saves me thinking about another meal idea ha.
Yes this!
Zealois · 01/08/2021 11:26

No, I don't like them enough to make one that often. We probably make one about 3 times a year, during the winter months. Usually chicken or turkey because I like them for sandwiches the next day.

Sunday dinners are just normal meals for us. Today we're having leftover mac and cheese.

ChocolateCakeYum · 01/08/2021 11:30

Not so much in the warm summer months (though I am doing one today as the weather is shite) but otherwise yes. Love a good roast!

Lunaballoon · 01/08/2021 11:31

Not really a roast as such, but I try to do something a bit special and preferably a lot of it so there’s enough for another meal with the leftovers.

StevieNix · 01/08/2021 11:32

We always do some sort of gravy meal but not necessarily just a roast joint of meat if that makes sense?
So could be toad in the hole, Shepard’s pie, chicken pie etc but always with gravy and vegetables.
