Does anyone still cook a weekly roast on Sunday?

Does anyone still do this? Just pondering what to prepare today and am quite fancying a curry! Do you cook (or go out for) a traditional roast dinner on a Sunday?

'Something on toast' is always going to be quicker and easier than just about most meals though.

Fizbosshoes · 01/08/2021 12:23

My DC think it's the law to have a roast on a sunday. If we even mention the idea of something different its met with huge complaints.
So we do most weeks. When it was ridiculously hot a couple of weeks ago I did pulled pork and new potatoes and salad which was just about acceptable to them!
Occassionally we go rogue and have a roast during the week. ('But we wouldnt do one on Sunday as well)

AlwaysLatte · 01/08/2021 12:24

Yes, although it's often on a weeknight if we're busy at the weekend.

BorderlineHappy · 01/08/2021 12:25

I have roast beef on as we speak.
Most weeks we have a roast .
Mostly beef but we'll buy the cooked chicken from Tesco and have mash some weeks.

Lamb when on special, actually might get lamb for next week.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/08/2021 12:26

I do - the left overs form part of the meals we have during the week, so as well as enjoying the roast I need the meat for other meals.

ShrikeAttack · 01/08/2021 12:27

Like others, the first roast of the season is usually around the end of September when there's a hint of chill in the air, then I'll cook one most weeks unless we're doing something else. Rotate between shoulder of lamb, rib of beef, shoulder of pork and chicken, with occasional duck, game birds, wild boar or venison. Last roast is always on Easter Sunday which is a leg of lamb. It's the law!

I actually quite fancy one now after reading this thread as it's raining and somewhat chilly...

LynetteScavo · 01/08/2021 12:28

I didn't used to every week, but I started in the first lockdown because I had the need to have a routine to stop all of the days blurring in to one.

RosesAndHellebores · 01/08/2021 12:31

Really looking forward to a wonderful loin of pork now with the first apples picked from the garden in September.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 01/08/2021 12:35

No...but that's because I don't like them.

SchrodingersMat · 01/08/2021 12:36

I love cooking a roast, it’s such a lovely family tradition and reminds me of my grandparents. We have one most Sundays between October and March, I rotate between chicken, beef, pork, lamb and duck so it’s not too repetitive.

Shmithecat2 · 01/08/2021 12:37

Depends - if it's not too hot, and DH/DF is here, yes. If it's just me and DS, no.

shazzz1xx · 01/08/2021 12:38

Every Sunday and Wednesday my mum cooks 15 of us a Sunday roast…. She is the best even in scorching weather bless her

Afolnerd · 01/08/2021 12:38

We have one every week. But that’s mainly because it’s about the only meal that all 4 kids will eat without complaining!

VestaTilley · 01/08/2021 12:39

Every Sunday in autumn, winter and early spring then usually something lighter and quicker in summer.

Toddler DS and DH love them, as do I. We go to church and it’s lovely coming home to the smell of the joint in the oven afterwards. We try and keep Sunday’s quite traditional, so a walk or bike ride after lunch if there’s time post DS’ nap, then a tea before his bath and bed.

That’s what I was brought up with, and it’s a lovely way to spend the day, I think.

CremeEggThief · 01/08/2021 12:40

I don't, but I'm in the minority where I Iive. Even on our hottest Sundays, roast dinners are a staple here in the North East. It's not even uncommon for people to have then during the week!Shock

GilbertsLuckySock · 01/08/2021 12:42

Not in hot summer, no!

Sometimes on a Saturday - depends how much work I have to do at the weekend.

It’s nice to have toad in the hole with some veggies as a alternative. We eat a lot of veg (farm). But it’s a nice tradition to uphold having a Sunday roast I must admit. I’m really hoping the children will continue it when they’re adults Smile

crossstitchcat · 01/08/2021 12:42

Not every week, maybe every two or 3 weeks. Cooking a chicken dinner now Grin. My mum used to do one every week up until a few years ago, not so much now.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/08/2021 12:43

I’m actually doing my first roast dinner in months. The family are overjoyed.

BorderlineHappy · 01/08/2021 12:43

Oh I love doing a roast during the week.
Especially when the kids are at school.
None of this is it done and coming in every minute.
Saying "I'm starrviiing"

starbrightstarlight8888 · 01/08/2021 12:43

I do. Every Sunday without fail.

newnortherner111 · 01/08/2021 12:43

I stopped a few years ago after the local butcher closed. Not keen on the same meat for a couple or more days in a row, and have reduced the amount of red meat I eat.

TillyTopper · 01/08/2021 12:45

Sometimes we have a roast - but only about every 4-6 weeks. We like, but prefer more spicier meals. My mother is shocked (and disappointed we don't have a roast every Sunday).

PercyPiginaWig · 01/08/2021 12:45

I love a Sunday roast but not enough to cook it! Only attempted it once.
DH is the chef here and not bothered about a roast so we maybe have it 6 or 8 times a year at home. He's a really good cook so to be fair I always get a good dinner and sometimes we go out for a roast.

My mum does it every week so I know I will get my roast fix when I go there.

niceupthedanceagain · 01/08/2021 12:50

Yes it's the only meal everyone likes in this house... in the summer we have it with new potatoes and salad. Roast beef and Yorkshires today though. Yum

storminabuttercup · 01/08/2021 12:52

Most Sundays, sometimes do a roast midweek too in the winter as it's one meal DS is guaranteed to eat without complaint and I do enjoy making them. I sometimes cheat and buy good prepared mash or cauliflower cheese. I started preparing ours just after 11 it'll be ready at 1 and I've been browsing on here, watching TV and had a shower in that time, I dont find them that much hard work but guess I've got it down to a fine art now (although it's beef today so quicker to cook than say chicken or pork)
