Does anyone still cook a weekly roast on Sunday?

Does anyone still do this? Just pondering what to prepare today and am quite fancying a curry! Do you cook (or go out for) a traditional roast dinner on a Sunday?

Bluesheep8 · 01/08/2021 11:33

Yep. Every Sunday lunchtime, on rare occasions we go out for Sunday lunch.
If it's really hot weather I'll still roast a chicken and have it with salad.

Katesboy8 · 01/08/2021 11:33

@Chasingsquirrels

My parents do (and we go over and eat it with them). Less often we will and they'll come to us. Over lockdowns when we weren't seeing them we usually cooked one at home. My kids have grown up with Sunday roast & family, as did I, and we all enjoy it.

Occasionally they do a bbq if they can't be bothered, and I feel quite let down (in my head obviously don't say anything).

@Chasingsquirrels omg I’d be buzzing to get invited over for a bbq! You’re so lucky!
olidora63 · 01/08/2021 11:36

No . I have always worked on Sunday’s and the children were never great roast fans anyway. Husband would never eat at lunchtime.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/08/2021 11:36

Not every week by any means, but maybe every 2 or 3 weeks. Probably more often in winter.

We have it in the evening though, never at lunchtime.

TheVanguardSix · 01/08/2021 11:36

Never. I'm not British though so it's not firmly rooted in my DNA to have a Sunday roast. Grin
Ironically however, it's The Sunday Roast that made me love this country. I thought it was brilliant. When I was young, back in the 90s, and new here to the UK, I was always having a Sunday roast in the pub with my mates. But that all passed... along with the Blur vs. Oasis feud and Massive Attack records. Sigh.
Haven't had a roast in years tbh.

MegaClutterSlut · 01/08/2021 11:37

In the winter I do or I get moaned at no chance in the summer unless its like todays weather

DinosaurDiana · 01/08/2021 11:38

Frequently I do, because I’ve got more time on a Sunday.

OhGiveUp · 01/08/2021 11:40

I do, although in fairness it's usually my DH who cooks it.
There's a side of beef sizzling away in the oven as I type and it's not only my dogs who are drooling. 😋

Tlems · 01/08/2021 11:41

Every Sunday unless it's lovely weather and then it's a Bbq, but haven't had that yet this year.

It's only a matter of time before you're sat at a table, wearing your Blur/Oasis t.shirt and tucking into roast beef and yorkshire pudding - lamenting the years that passed too quickly Grin
TheSmallAssassin · 01/08/2021 11:47

We have one most Sundays from autumn to spring, but in the evening. It's one meal we all like. I don't understand why people think it's a faff? The meat just cooks in the oven, potatoes just need peeling, parboiling and turning over, and then it's just veg like you'd have with any other meal? Gravy takes five minutes too.

RuthTopp · 01/08/2021 11:51

We probably have a roast dinner about 6/7 times a year. It makes them really enjoyable when we do . I couldn't imagine having one weekly.

Parker231 · 01/08/2021 11:52

@TheSmallAssassin - it is a faff as it takes too much time - pasta or something on toast is much quicker and easier.

RedLemonadeNTaytos · 01/08/2021 11:54

Probably every other week over autumn & winter. Last time I cooked one was Easter weekend. Probably won’t again until October half term.

Ghosttile · 01/08/2021 11:55

No. Just at Christmas.

TheSmallAssassin · 01/08/2021 11:56

@Parker231, fair enough, though I wouldn't be having those for my main meal, so doesn't seem that much different for me.

Ghosttile · 01/08/2021 11:57

I do stews in the colder months, in a massive le creuset casserole, so they are a bit like the MN Chicken Grin

Tumbleweed101 · 01/08/2021 12:00

Depends on how many of my children will be home. If everyone is here I'll make one but my teens are a bit erratic as to what they are working and where they are going these days. Not worth the washing up just for me!

Movinghouseatlast · 01/08/2021 12:03

Yes in the winter I do. In the summer I often do a summery version, so lemon potatoes instead of normal roast for example and I might do the chicken on the barbeque.

Bbq1 · 01/08/2021 12:09

@Turnthatlightoff

I do most weeks, if its a scorching day I'll do a roast chicken with a salad instead of the trimmings. My children moan but a sunday roast feels like home to me and I love it.
My ds is 15 and a roast is his favourite meal, he's massively disappointed if we don't have one occasionally. It's probably our favourite too, especially in the winter but I make them all year long unless it's scorching.
Brainwave89 · 01/08/2021 12:14

Probably about half the time I do. Others I will try new things. Good fish, paella is a favourite and lamb curry.

MrsTophamHat · 01/08/2021 12:15

In winter I would do it maybe every other week.

I might get into it more when the kids are older but it seems a lot of hassle making all the different components just for two adults and two small child portions, and i'm not a big fan of the leftovers.

Guardup · 01/08/2021 12:16

Yes always (unless it’s hot then we’d probably have a bar b q). I look forward to it and find it one of the easiest dinners to cook. Helped by a lovely glass of red from midday when I’m cooking it and a lovely home made dessert that the children make for us followed with a board game. It’s a real tradition in our family (as it was in my childhood). We rarely deviate from beef though!

HermioneGrunger · 01/08/2021 12:17

I don't understand why people think it's a faff?

I prefer one pot cooking, I just can't be bothered loading several different pots and pans in to the dishwasher.

FizziWater · 01/08/2021 12:18

Yes and it's my favourite meal.
I enjoy all kinds of food and am usually quite an adventuro cook but I love a roast dinner.
