New tenants are refusing to hand over my daughter’s parcels

My daughter ordered £200 worth of clothes for herself and her baby from Next and forgot to put her new address on the order form. The courier has sent a photo of the door opened to her old flat with a man’s leg showing accepting the parcels. She asked her upstairs neighbour to pop down and get the parcels and hang on to them until I can get round there, but the new tenants have point blank said they’ve not had any parcels delivered !
I’m going round there tomorrow morning to show them the picture of them receiving them and seeing what they have to say about that.
If they still refuse, which is daylight robbery, would the police take any notice at all?
I’m also a bit nervous as I’m a short and small woman and easily intimidated. WWYD?

I would first tell them that “the courier company have sent the photos and times of you accepting our parcel”

“I'm not leaving here without the parcel, as I have proof that it’s here”

might initially sound more authoritative to them - then “find” the photo of their legs - to show them, if the initial approach fails?

EastWestWhosBest · 27/07/2021 22:35

They can’t really argue it when you show them the picture can they?

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 27/07/2021 22:36

Well unless there's a picture of the house number I don't see how they can know that it's been delivered to the right address

All these photos of open doors and people's feet seem a bit pointless to me

Horst · 27/07/2021 22:37

Problem is a photo of an open door they can then say yes they took the photo and I told them it wasn’t for us so they took the parcel away again.

It’s the courier vs the Tennant he said she said. I’ve had parcels delivered here for others and they haven’t carded and I’ve had my parcels marked as handed to resident when I was in and my cameras show nobody came to my door.

Couriers and parcels are always a hard to argue thing without definite proof. I’ve had to send cctv footage of the exact time parcels have been claimed to be delivered to prove they haven’t. I’ve had photos of parcels at my door that I’ve then answered the door 10/15 later as the driver didn’t actually knock. The photos prove nothing really.

Because most front doors look different?

You want to involve the police because your daughter didn't update her address? 🤔

AnneLovesGilbert · 27/07/2021 22:41

My sympathies. Of course it was her fault but most of us have fucked up similarly.

When DD was tiny I ordered some stuff from a company I rarely used and somehow - I literally have no idea how - I selected the address of my ex MIL who was the last person I’d sent something to from there, who lives hours away. I came out in a cold sweat when I got the delivery confirmation it had gone to her and nearly puked, it was awful.

Had to text my shitty ex husband who I hadn’t spoken to in years and ask him to ask his mother, who I’d had no contact with since I left him. Resolved quickly in the end but OP’s DD isn’t the first to mess up.

purpledagger · 27/07/2021 22:44

I think you just need to go round and keep it light and friendly. I'm sure the tenants will hand it over.

No, because the tenants stole her stuff.

I've read this entire thread in Pat Butcher

Pat Butcher 😂😂

wookneecorn · 27/07/2021 22:52

Irregardless of the parcels being sent to the wrong address, it's theft, because it's not in the new tenants name, and not theirs to keep.

I advise that you don't threaten them with the police. I'd contact the police though and see if there's anything they could do.The parcels have already been asked to be returned and they have refused. I wouldn't want the new tenants to have a claim on harassment. Not likely, but I should think possible.

boogiewithasuitcase · 27/07/2021 22:52

Next time your DD orders anything online, she should put in the directions box 'If I am out do NOT deliver to Number 13' (or whatever the neighbour's house number/name is)l

Fiddliestofsticks · 27/07/2021 22:55

It is a crime. The police do deal with his. They may choose not to pursue depending in available officers etc but it is a crime and you can and should call the police.

You could also take them to small claims, but the photo really needs to be able to show that it is 100% their front door that is open.

pinkstripeycat · 27/07/2021 22:56

Just asked a policeman (DH). It’s theft snd the police WILL help

NotTerfNorCis · 27/07/2021 23:00

Report it to Next and see what they advise. It's illegal to take someone else's mail. The address might have been wrong but the parcel would have had your daughter's name on it.

Nextchapterofmybook · 27/07/2021 23:01

Yep I’ve had the police help me retrieve a parcel from neighbours who wouldn’t hand it over

The OP probably won't get any rent paid either if she uses that approach.
expat101 · 27/07/2021 23:02

I would be sceptical of handing over a parcel to a 3rd party too. I think both you and your daughter need to go knock on the door, apologise for the muck up, and ask for the parcel.

having the photo handy would be helpful just in case.

My only other concern is if one member of the house had the parcel and has given away/sold the items on FB marketplace or such like for the sake of a couple of extra pounds/dollars and the other family members don't know. But cross that bridge if you get to it. Not sure what you would do in that case, but it is a worst case scenerio.

GetOffThatTable · 27/07/2021 23:04

I would tell them you know it is there as the courier company took a photo of it being delivered and if they do not hand it over you will be going to the police. I would then call the police from outside their house in full view of them.

However, to be on the safe side I would contact the police first to find out what their advice is. They have opened or kept something that isn't addressed to them. Could your daughter also contact the landlord or the letting agent?

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 27/07/2021 23:07

'The OP probably won't get any rent paid either if she uses that approach.'

Eh? She's not their landlord...?

Regardless & Irrespective are two different words. HTH

THIS! @PerseverancePays
springiscoming12 · 27/07/2021 23:09

The same thing happened to me recently and Next gave me a refund. I would try to get the items back from the new owner but do give Next a call too, hopefully they’ll be able to sort this out.

Did you get it? What nonsense story did the neighbour's give?
