Neighbour looked after the cats for us while we were away last week. She was there Monday-Thursday.
On Sunday, I noticed my old laptop had looked like it had been knocked about and also I think some jewellery had gone missing.
Grandkids said it was not them and so I got DP to go and chat to neighbour just to see if she could shed any light. First he asked if she managed to lock the double doors to the conservatory which she said she had and that that always did a check before she left the house. Then he asked if she knew about what had happened to the laptop and she said she didn't and hadn't touched it. She said it was not her and DP said she seemed upset and he said he was not accusing her.
She's now given the spare key back and said she doesn't feel comfortable cat sitting for us anymore, given what's going on. Aibu to ask if we handled this right?

Buy your neighbour some flowers and use a cattery in future.

What kind of light did you think she could shine on it?

I would have given your key back too, and told you where to shove it.

A neighbour is not going to steal jewellery when you give them the keys to their house. That sort of crime is committed by strangers or at best tradespeople (no offence intended), not someone you love next to! Can't really fathom what knocking an old laptop about means, but children do lie to avoid getting in trouble. I'd be very upset if I was your neighbour

You 'think' some jewellery is missing and your laptop has a bash that you're not sure if it had before 🤔

Honestly sometimes being away for a while means that you see so many more things than you usually don't notice.

I go away for three/four weeks every year and despite the fact I leave the place clean and tidy, every time I come home I notice things that I totally missed previously, like the random sock in the hallway that got dropped enroute to the laundry or the scuffs on the paint work in the hall or the drawers left half open because there was a last minute panic I had forgotten to pack my passport etc. That sock would have been there for a few days before I left but I didn't notice it in my regular day to day life; the scuffs on the paintwork were not new I just hadn't got used to seeing them; I was sure I left the desk tidy and closed all the drawers before I left; coming back after a few weeks meant I was seeing the place with fresh eyes.

The laptop was probably in the exact same state as when you left, you're just seeing it with fresh eyes and the jewellery may or may not have been misplaced, you can't be 100% sure so you shouldn't be accusing "asking" anyone anything unless you are 100% sure
