If you've been pinged did you isolate?

FlatteredFool · 23/07/2021 22:26

I've been pinged today for the first time and told to isolate for 5 days. Reading other threads it seems that a lot of people don't have the app or wouldn't isolate if they were pinged.

@Dreamstate

Here is the message sent to me at 3pm and my booking i cancelled was at 12 noon.
This is not an app ping so not linked to your app at all.

The restaurant must have passed all details on to test and trace who have done an alert but it says you dont need to isolate anyway.

I have the app but the trace element is switched off as like others said I have a mortgage to pay.

Faevern · 24/07/2021 10:46

I can't believe people will self isolate and lose money on the basis of a money making app introduced by the government. It's not an NHS app it's private, where has common sense gone? It's like 1984.

The same government who said it was OK to go to horse racing or to football and that the Prime Minister didn't need to self isolate even through proper NHS test and trace.

And now we have a pingdemic just watch how fast the government introduces ways to ignore their mates app.

Bobbybobbins · 24/07/2021 10:49

I deleted my app a while ago. However I would isolate if I was phoned due to being named as a close contact or obviously if it was a family member testing positive.

Champagneforeveryone · 24/07/2021 10:55

I did the first time (January) as knew I had two work colleagues who had tested positive. I took it very seriously and completed the whole period.

Have recently received a ping at work which I have ignored as we are Covid secure and (due to a set of very boring circumstances) I know I was not in contact with anyone outside of the screens.

But what other people do is of no relevance to whether I isolate. This attitude of 'they're doing this so I will too' is childish. I also don't give a shit about the origins of the app in this context. Again, I'm not going to childishly refuse to isolate because of the app. From my perspective. I know that the chances of actually having been a close contact when I was pinged were minimal because I know exactly where I was and what I did on that day.

But I work with vulnerable people, I have friends who are vulnerable, pregnant etc so why on earth would I not want to do everything I can to make sure I'm not putting them at risk?
I will continue to do this when the rules change.

Faevern · 24/07/2021 11:20

@tothelakes Actually some persons decision to self isolate based on an app can often have relevance or an effect on others. The NHS, who work with vulnerable people, would have collapsed if they had all used the app. School children have repeatedly been sent home, businesses are struggling, people are losing income.

The best way to protect people you know is to be aware, not rely on an innacurate app.

It's common sense not childish. I am fully vaccinated and have never broken lockdown rules. I work with vulnerable people too.

I didn't say not isolating is childish, I said that the reasons given were.

I'm aware of the impact of Covid and having to isolate thanks and the blame lays firmly with the government withdrawing/not giving financial support.

Hesma · 24/07/2021 11:30

Yes and yes… do the right thing

But this is not an isolation request is it, the isolation requests do not mention where or when your contact was and your message specifically says "you do not need to isolate". Your gripe is surely with the restaurant who have handed your details over on their list following a positive case.

Faevern · 24/07/2021 13:13

Is it childish or is it conditioning? Naming the app NHS purposely confused and coerced people into using it. Many people who choose to isolate are doing so because others are, so they are not thinking independently either. The app is guidance. I don't think my reasons are childish, the app isn't fit for purpose, I think that's common sense. The government are effectively backtracking on this app now, making workers exempt, including non vaccinated people, because it is affecting the economy.

VestaTilley · 24/07/2021 13:25

DH just got pinged and has to self-isolate at home until Monday - so that’s what he’s doing.

If people keep spreading this virus we will never be rid of it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/07/2021 13:29

We will never be rid of it...

Kingsway · 24/07/2021 13:31

Yes, I did.
I work with schools and have elderly parents. Would never forgive myself if I infect them. Even with the vaccine, the virus would kill my dad.

WoodPell · 24/07/2021 13:32

I turned off contact tracing when my MiL's best friend was pinged through her wall. He hadn't left the house in weeks.

lifehappened · 24/07/2021 13:32

I deleted it after my husband was pinged. Testing every day instead, my new business won't survive if I don't work

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/07/2021 13:33

I am not even sure why these people have it tbh
NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 24/07/2021 13:37

I stopped using the app weeks ago. When our family have genuine close contact - eg spending time with friends, via kids childcare setting, at my workplace, I am contacted by those people. I don't use public transport where I could be seated close to someone I don't know for a prolonged period, and I'm careful to wear a mask and maintain distance in shops etc. I'm also double vaccinated.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 24/07/2021 13:38

If people keep spreading this virus we will never be rid of it.

What an absurd thing to say. We will never "be rid of it" regardless. We need to reach a stage where the vast majority of the population have antibodies/vaccine. It will then continue to circulate as flu does.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 24/07/2021 13:42

Ps. I don't use the app. But I would isolate if I had close contact with a positive case. Each time I've PCR tested I have isolated while waiting for results.

I just think that the app is unrealistically sensitive. It relies on the range of bluetooth, which can extend to well beyond 2m.

Kingsway · 24/07/2021 14:36

@Fairyliz

The only people I know who are isolating are those who work for the council and get paid whilst they are off. They’ve had a good time whilst the weather has been hot Hmm
@Fairyliz - what an awful comment.

I'm council employed - although I couldn't see family, friends or have a social life, I continued working 12 hour days from home, in isolation, holding meetings via TEAMs, supporting schools to educate children amidst the biggest closures we've since March 2020.

Fairyliz · 24/07/2021 15:16

@Kingsway
I’m sure you have been working incredibly hard and thank you.
But in the same way that not every single person who works for the NHS is a ‘hero’ not every single council worker has been busting a gut.

HelenHywater · 24/07/2021 15:24

I don't have the app, but have isolated for 10 days twice in the last 5 weeks as two of my dds have had it.

I would isolate if asked to by T&T.

I was also part of the DCTS study for one of my isolations - made it so much more bearable. I found it impossible for the second isolation.

@Fairyliz I agree, other government departments also pay staff and I know one office where 9 people got up at the same time and walked out for 10 days when their phones pinged. Some have isolated more than once on full pay.

I have friends who work for the NHS at home in admin, yet receive all the discounts and offers that all NHS workers have, including queue jumping at the time

I have far more sympathy for those on minimum wage who were forced to take big risks with their health, who don't receive full pay or any pay when off and who are now being told they may not need to self isolate as they are essential and still on the worst pay.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 24/07/2021 18:30

Mines gone weird. I was self isolating and did a pcr on Thursday. Got the negative result by text this morning and entered ref code and now im green again.

So I isolated for 2.5 days then I'm free? Or is my app up the spout?

Youdiditanyway · 24/07/2021 18:32

Deleted the app. Mum had it and was told to isolate last year. She kept getting phone calls reminding her she should be isolating whenever she took the bins out or went too far out into her garden. She deleted the app because 1984 wasn’t a guidebook.
