AIBU to be upset at this disappointment

For the past 18 months I have done as I have been told: stayed in, kept my distance, not seen my Mum or grandchildren, not holidayed, had the jabs and downloaded the app.
When it looked like the easing of restrictions on 19th July was going to happen my DH and I decided to treat ourselves and booked good (I.e expensive) theatre tickets and lunch in a nice hotel in a nearby city. On Monday I booked and paid for the train tickets.
On Wednesday I get pinged and told to self isolate until midnight on Saturday. I calculated that my contact day was last Thursday and what did I do last Thursday? I popped into Tesco. I don't think I was in the shop for 15 minutes - never mind near someone for 15 minutes. Otherwise I have been nowhere and done nothing. 🤢
I have taken a PCR test and am waiting for the results but 3 lateral flow tests have proved negative. I am so upset.
I know people have much worse problems so AIBU for being so upset that I can't go.

Delete the app and go.

Thank you everyone. Smile I am going if my PCR test comes back negative. My isolation is up at midnight on Saturday and the tickets are for Saturday. Spoke to my niece, this morning, as she is having my dog for the day, apparently she had the same thing last week. She is a teacher and her head was desperate for her to be in school, so the head rang the County Public Health Dept who advised that if she had negative PCR test and carried on with daily lateral flow tests until the end of her 'isolation' period she could go into work. By coincidence that is what I have been doing so thanks to you all and my niece I am going.

If PCR comes back negative then take an extra LFT on the day of the outing and if it is negative, go!
The app is over-sensitive. To put this in perspective, my personal trainer tested positive 3 days after I last trained with her (outside in the park). We don’t put our faces close together but she is less than 1m away from me. She told test and trace about her contact with me and they chose not to contact me. I have no idea if I would have got pinged because I don’t take my phone with me to training, but I bet I would have.

TheGumption · 23/07/2021 13:24

Ffs delete the app! Why do people insist on having the damn thing and then moaning when it does what it's designed to do? Get rid!

Roselilly36 · 23/07/2021 13:24

Go to the theatre, leave your phone at home, delete the App.

HaveringWavering · 23/07/2021 13:25

Cross post. Yay, good decision!

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 23/07/2021 13:26

Another vote for go! Smile

I live in a country where we don’t have such an app and you are only considered a close contact if you spend 20 mins unmasked in a closed room and at less than 2 mètres from someone.

Our cases are way lower than the UKs but E do all still wear masks everywhere.

Honestly I would ignore the ping as you know you have not had close contact.

Guavaf1sh · 23/07/2021 13:31

Ignore it. Go

FatAnneTheDealer · 23/07/2021 13:33

Professor Sir John Bell (Regius Professor of Medicine) says if you are pinged you should test, and if negative you should be allowed to go about your business. Other commentators who have done studies suggest the same - perhaps test for several days.

If your PCR test comes back negative, do another test - lateral flow quickie - the day before you go. If still negative and no symptoms, there is very very little chance that you are infected or could infect anyone. That’s what the science says. Go and enjoy yourself!

Hallyup6 · 23/07/2021 13:39

Delete and go.

Doodlebug71 · 23/07/2021 13:39

The variant that's persuaded Aus to lock down has been passed by "fleeting" contact in supermarkets. All it takes is one asymptomatic person not wearing a mask, and the space is infected.

You isolate. If you don't, you're putting everyone you come into contact at risk.

Jasmine11 · 23/07/2021 13:40

YABU to not ignore the ping. If you know you were only in Tesco's briefly then use your common sense and just carry on with your plans. Self isolation is only advisory, not compulsory..

OP doesn't need close contact. All that's needed is for one person to spend time in apace where someone else has breathed CV out. All those maskless people: this is what they are doing.
HmmmmmmInteresting · 23/07/2021 13:42

I voted YABU for having this dodgy app

CosmicComfort · 23/07/2021 13:42

I do think if you have the app and contact tracing on, you shouldn’t be surprised if you are pinged, particularly now as cases are quite high!

I’ve turned it off and won’t turn it back on and won’t be checking in to places. I test regularly, still wear masks and am avoiding contact with anyone except work as I am going on holiday in a week.

Turn off the app and keep doing the LFT’s. Enjoy the theatre.

RuggerHug · 23/07/2021 13:43

Were you wearing a mask and also Delta can spread in 5-10 seconds not minutes. Keep doing the tests and I hope you make it to the show on Saturday, you deserve it.

LimeRedBanana · 23/07/2021 13:44

From an outside perspective - sorry, but the UK is an absolute shit show.

What’s the point in saying ‘restrictions lifted’, whilst also ‘pinging’ people, and expecting them to take it in any way seriously?

No-one else will be taking pings seriously - so you might as well go out into it all. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Noterook · 23/07/2021 13:46

Delete the app.

Agree, especially since it seems to be so inaccurate. I never downloaded the app from our health authority in Denmark, but I test twice-weekly (had one Pfizer jab so far).

If I were you, and the PCR test is negative, I'd go.

Sunshineandflipflops · 23/07/2021 14:01

I was pinged and had a lovely weekend planned. I did daily LFT's for the 6 days it told me to self isolate and carried on as normal. I also swiftly deleted the app! Between 2 secondary school kids, we have had enough disruptions to our lives from self isolating (none of us have had Covid and adults double jabbed) so unless it's from track and trace or I have symptoms or a positive test, I won't be isolating.

ShortBacknSides · 23/07/2021 14:01

Tell that to the "Freedom Day" brigade. Loads of them posting here

BewareOfTheAgapanthus · 23/07/2021 14:10

It’s never been about fear. The government opens things up until the health service can stand no more, then they shut things down again.
Anyway OP, enjoy the theatre. The rule was always that being pinged was advisory so you can choose to ignore it; new evidence seems to suggest that LFTs are good at picking up the positive cases most likely to be infectious, and with a PCR test I think you have fulfilled your obligations.

whynotwhatknot · 23/07/2021 14:16

turn off the app its not mandatory-thats why so many people are off work they think its the law its not unless t and t contact you persoanlly

BeautifulWar · 23/07/2021 14:18

Given you’re not legally obligated to have the app I’d delete and ignore. Unless I was notified of a close contact through work or a social situation then no way I’d isolate under these circumstances.

I agree, go and have a wonderful time.
