Hi all. Name changed as don't want real life hatred.

We've been isolating for 8 days as DH tested positive. We count the 10 days from when he first showed symptoms. Were sending DC1 and DC2 back to school tomorrow.

However just lateral flowed them and DC2 is stongingly positive. We're tempted to send DC1 to school as it's their last couple of days of year 6.

Is this horribly irresponsible? Should we sit out another 10 days as a family? Sposed to be going to Devon on Sunday.

If we should send DC1 to school what should we tell them?

IBU - should do more isolation NBU should carefully proceed with life.

As summer house says, I'm pretty sure the gov explanation chart shows that unless dc1 shows symptoms, then dc1 isolation ends at the 10 days from DH symptoms. Dc1 does not have to start the 10 days again. Only dc2 would need to isolate, everyone else is free 10 days after DH symptoms start. Unless of course they start showing symptoms.

Perhaps not ideal or makes much sense but that's what the guidance says. Unless it's changed since I last saw it.

The chart...

But this irrelevant as tomorrow is only day 9 of their isolation.
Malbecfan · 21/07/2021 11:45

Please do not come to Devon. I live there with my family. My DDs are in their early 20s and have only received one vaccine dose each. If one of your family needs hospital care, we don't have many hospitals. If you came to my s/c cottage (not open this year) I wouldn't be able to accommodate the next guests.

DD2 works in an ice-cream shop which has hand sanitiser and staff wear face coverings. People refused to use the hand sanitiser or wear face coverings when she worked yesterday "because I don't have to". Maybe not, but she and her generation have sacrificed quite a lot to keep their elders and the vulnerable safe. What a shame it is not reciprocated.

EileenGC · 21/07/2021 11:46

The LFT-positive child needs a PCR to confirm the infection. LFT means nothing in this case. They could well be towards the end of their ‘infectious period’ and a PCR will give you a more accurate result.

If it’s positive then no, you don’t send them to school. I guess more than one of the 25+ children in his/her class will also have holidays booked from this weekend, and I couldn’t risk ruining other families’ plans.

Here's the link to the NHS scotland chart

Coronanamechangie · 21/07/2021 11:47

This is government guidance
If other household members develop symptoms during this period, you do not need to isolate for longer than 10 days.

Your child hasn’t just shown symptoms - you’ve tested them and their LFT is positive. Any positive LFT needs confirming with a PCR.
Comedycook · 21/07/2021 11:48

I totally understand, it's really really shit and I'd be so sad if it was my DC missing their last couple of days at primary school, but honestly, you cannot send them.

JoborPlay · 21/07/2021 11:49

But your OP says tomorrow is day 9. So they should be isolating regardless. Day 11 (i.e end of day 10) is when they can go back to school.
pleasedonttextmyman · 21/07/2021 11:50

Name changed as don't want real life hatred.

so you do know that you are completely wrong and unreasonable, let alone selfish.

So why do you ask?

PatchworkElmer · 21/07/2021 11:50

Please don’t send your child to school. Get the child who is LFT positive a PCR test and go from there. It would be hugely irresponsible to send you child in when their sibling is positive for covid.

Shapesorted · 21/07/2021 11:50

And ruin everyone else's holiday too? Nice!

ILoveYouILoveYouIDo · 21/07/2021 11:51

@SummerHouse

The actual guidance says DS can go to school. Obviously positive DS can't and you can't take positive DS on hols but negative DS can go in. Let me find the handy chart...
Not true. If someone tests positive in a house hold, everyone has to isolate.

Op don't be incredibly stupid. You know its wrong, don't do it.

Coronanamechangie · 21/07/2021 11:53

To clarify as well. It's 10 days since first symptom. DH had cold for 2 days before testing positive.

OP posts:
Conchitastrawberry · 21/07/2021 11:55

I’d get your DC1 a pcr test and go from there. Until then really you have to stay home.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 21/07/2021 11:55

I have a feeling you will just do what you want anyway so why bother posting?

MatildaTheCat · 21/07/2021 11:56

Why don’t you call the COVID advice line and ask if you don’t want to accept what people are saying on here?

MordredsOrrery · 21/07/2021 11:56

There is no dilemma here. A new positive (get it confirmed by PCR) in the household resets the self-isolation clock for everyone.

I'm sorry your trip to Devon is off though, that sucks ☹

Youdiditanyway · 21/07/2021 11:57

Your DC needs a PCR, LF aren’t very reliable. If PCR is positive you will need to isolate for a further 10 days. Neither of them should be going to school.

This guidance is irrelevant as they have tested positive, not just developed symptoms.

You cannot send your DC to school.

Littlepool · 21/07/2021 11:57

Thanks to someone doing exactly as you are considering, my toddler and my 8 month pregnant self are currently floored with covid. How Incredibly selfish! I'm borderline for requiring hospital care depending on how the next few hours go and DC is so poorly, they can't even keep water down! It's made even worse by finding out the household we and 3 other families caught it from had confirmed positive cases and still sent dc to pre school!

But of course only you and your family matter so do whatever suits you best Hmm

MrsTWH · 21/07/2021 11:58

OP if today is Day 8 of isolation, you can’t send your DC1 to school tomorrow!
Get DC2 a PCR test and decide what to do about your holiday after that.

100percent21 · 21/07/2021 11:58

This is why this virus is never going away #selfish

jajabanks · 21/07/2021 11:59

You don't restart quarantine when someone else gets it. Everyone who doesn't catch it can leave the house after the original quarantine asking as they haven't caught it. The one that has caught it starts quarantine again. My youngest was stuck in the house for 17 days as he caught it towards the end of original quarantine.
