To think people crying ‘Freedom’ today are stupid sheep…

…who have let themselves be manipulated by the right wing media and the Government?

Freedom can mean lots of things and you can look all over the world for examples of people who are not free.

But the Government, supported by the right wing media, are selling this idea of a freedom day as a distraction from rocketing Covid rates.

I think people who buy into it are sheep.

I assume using the word sheep was a deliberate turn around on the anti mask, anti vaxxers, anti lockdown lot shouting sheeple at us. Was it op?

fromdownwest · 19/07/2021 10:07

One could argue people that are allowing their freedom of movements and enforced wearing of a non effective face covering are sheep?

The whole situation is very veru divisive, and not healthy for society.

Viviennemary · 19/07/2021 10:12

I am going out this afternoon to the shops and wont be wearing a mask. I have tolerated one all this time and quite often avoided shops even though I could have been exempt.

AngeloMysterioso · 19/07/2021 10:20

@Farwest

Stop calling others sheep. It makes you sound like a twat.
This.
summersflowers · 19/07/2021 10:25

I think that it seems to me that complying with the original restrictions - mask wearing and social distancing - has been presented to the public as the socially acceptable and moral thing to do.

People obviously don’t let go of that easily: if there is an inkling that not wearing a mask in a shop makes you an inconsiderate arsehole then of course no one wants to be labelled as such.

The problem is that the restrictions aren’t without consequence either. Personally I’d just like to be able to make that call for myself.

B1rthis · 19/07/2021 10:31

@ProtectMaternity what is happening in maternity units?

Fairyliz · 19/07/2021 11:10

@Saucery
They are gorgeous sheep!
Perhaps I could start a nice photo of sheep thread, all this Covid stuff is making me stressed.

I would vote for this.
@ProtectMaternity what is happening in maternity units?
Huge levels of staff sickness absence / self isolation leading to safety concerns and closures. Increased numbers of Covid positive women in maternity units. Big increase in pregnant women being admitted to hospital due to COVID, and 1 in 10 of them needing ICU. Staff who are well working all hours, ambulances often unavailable even for urgent transfers. It’s really really worrying - and it’s not being reported anywhere. I don’t know why. RCOG have released a statement about the increase in hospitalisation amongst pregnant women but the pressures on the service aren’t being discussed. Very worried about what will happen after “freedom day” 🙄

That’s a lovely idea @Fairyliz!

I can’t comment on maternity but my husband’s cancer department is struggling due to people self isolating, or having to stay at home to look after children whose bubbles have popped.

What’s your preferred solution protectmaternity?

gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 11:38

Haha some of you are so quick witted and funny!

Where's the op?

There really is no good solution, but doing away with all restrictions overnight is definitely a bad move!

Constantly having service users ask me why people can go to the pub without a mask but the units still have restrictions - what I want to say is “because if we open everything up, there’ll be nowhere within 3 counties that you can go to give birth, and no ambulances either”.

It’s so bloody frustrating but the trusts are all keeping quiet so as not to scare people I think.

Cam2020 · 19/07/2021 11:48

I haven't heard one person referring to it as 'freedom day' in real life - other than broadcasters discussing aspects of it.

It gov spin, that's all. I haven't heard anyone going around saying 'face, hands, space' either.

Aposterhasnoname · 19/07/2021 11:50

Only twats call people sheep or sheeple.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 19/07/2021 11:51

I do think it's a bit stupid that people are starting to do things that mean covid spreading will be worse. It's like they've forgotten that if the rules change or not, there is still a virus, it's still spreading exponentially, and that yes while it's nice not to have to wear a mask in a shop, you might actually stop someone dying by doing so, so celebrating while the clinically vulnerable are effectively being made prisoners and more and more people are getting ill (even when double vaccinated) and losing wages etc seems a bit off to me

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/07/2021 11:52

Oooh, a sheep thread.
Happy Eid, btw!

The virus will still be here in 5, 10, 1000 years time. What are we to do then? Distance, isolate, masks, limit contact... live totally unnaturally forever? Wait for some breakthrough cure which will likely never come? This virus is always going to spread.
Bryonyshcmyony · 19/07/2021 12:02

It is exactly because I understand how viruses are spread that I will enjoy my pathetic bit of maskless freedom until it mutates again and becomes unvaccinable (ok doommongering but bound to happen)

redcarbluecar · 19/07/2021 12:04

Human beings aren’t sheep; it’s a pathetic last-resort insult. Don’t sink to that level. Agree though about govt and media manipulation.

Boood · 19/07/2021 12:09

I almost hid this thread without reading because I thought it would be yet another screechfest, calling people murderers for wanting to live a normal life. I’m so glad there aren’t as many of those as there used to be.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 19/07/2021 12:18

I find this sort of lazy generalisation offensive to sheep. They have social intelligence which is far superior to that of many human beings, and, as anyone who's ever had to deal with the little woolly monsters knows, they're rebellious little buggers too.

spotcheck · 19/07/2021 12:20

@OppsUpsSide

I think calling people sheep or sheeple is dehumanising and fucking irritating.
