Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:46

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

My workplace has got rid of all measures. Im double jabbed yet I’m still dreading going to work tomorrow. hoping most customers will continue to wear them regardless as will I .

southeastdweller · 19/07/2021 10:02

If a shop requires you to wear a mask they can do so, they don't need to explain themselves to you.

Of course but it’s extremely unlikely they would deny a non-mask wearer entry. They need to make money!

gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 10:02

And also.....I see many want shops to ban/refuse/enforce mask wearing..... tyrn people away

Can I ask WHO you think should be stood there doing this task?? And what do you think will happen

DickKerrLadies · 19/07/2021 10:02

I'll probably still wear one in small shops, for the benefit of the staff as in some shops it's impossible to try and keep some distance. But I've never thought of mask wearing as about protecting myself, it's just one layer of protecting others. And it's not just about what I want to do.

FlyingBattie · 19/07/2021 10:03

Each to their own.
I will continue to wear mine in shops, but they can not legally enforce wearing one. I'm not sure if private companies can make it a condition of entry though

gardeninggirl68 · 19/07/2021 10:04

@UrAWizHarry

How will shops prevent entry without a mask? Who will stop the shopper intent on going maskless?

Emmacb82 · 19/07/2021 10:05

I don’t understand why it’s so hard to wear a mask (obviously excluding people who can’t for whatever reason). For most people, it’s a short amount of time whilst they pop in a shop, walk to a table in a cafe etc. I can manage to wear full ppe for over 12hours in this sweltering heat in a hospital with no issue. I wish they had just carried on making them mandatory for now whilst the cases are so high still. We are all so used to wearing them now, it’s second nature. It’s going to be so much worse when they make it compulsory again soon when it’s all gone tits up.

IcedSpice · 19/07/2021 10:05

@Confiscatedpopit

I won’t be wearing one. If I’m asked I’ll be going elsewhere unless they can explain to me a very good reason why I should- e.g it’s a very small shop with a vulnerable staff member. The onus isn’t on me to explain my choice in not wearing one anymore.

Most of the people worried have been working from home for the last 16 months or retired anyway. Time to get back to normal and live with it.

the good reason is that the shop owners want you to?

they dont have to let you in

starfro · 19/07/2021 10:06
@starfro actually Chris Whitby says he will still wear a mask for most of the time, he says …

Which covers most scenarios really!
Sure, however he also said now is the best time to open up. Masks might flatten the peak somewhat so not a terrible idea.

Vaccines are great, but not enough to achieve herd immunity, so we need a substantial number of people to get infected right now. Vaccine+infection gives very good protection, and this is what they are aiming for.

It doesn't really matter now, Delta is so transmissible you can't stop it without an incredibly hard lockdown, so no matter what happens it will rip through the population. Everyone offered a vaccine should take one to minimise risk.

I'm not anti-masks. Someone who is CEV should be protecting themselves for example with a proper protective mask, not just for Covid but for other nasty respiratory illnesses.

Jaxhog · 19/07/2021 10:07

I don't understand why anyone would refuse to wear a mask if asked in a shop. Is it to make a point of it being legal to refuse? What happened to common courtesy towards other people?

IcedSpice · 19/07/2021 10:08

@Frittataz

I see why you might think I’m entitled but if that’s the case why would I have bothered to stick to the rules from the start? If I was genuinely entitled then I could have (easily) lied stated I was exempt and not wore a mask, I could have continued to visit my family, including my two elderly grandparents, I could have refused to put my dc through the hassle of weekly covid tests etc etc. I’m not an arsehole, I’ve done what I was required to do from the start, but I’ve simply had enough now.
Of course you are entitled - and goady!
PaulaPetunia · 19/07/2021 10:08

I only come across gentle reminders on here.
They sound insufferable.

UmpteenthTime · 19/07/2021 10:08

I’ve had emails from my hairdresser and beautician saying they are continuing to wear masks and continue with the measures that have been in place.
I’m happy to comply.
So many employers are stuck between a rock and a hard place with this.
They’re using their own discretion as to what works best for their particular business, employees and clients and I respect that decision.

Flambola · 19/07/2021 10:09

I was in M&S today. Not one staff member was wearing a mask. The majority of shoppers were though. I’m exempt but I attempt to wear them. I am fed up of it though - as someone who is hearing impaired I struggle to communicate with anyone and get sighs and rolled eyes if I mention I’m deaf. No-one thinks of us lip readers!

Jaxhog · 19/07/2021 10:10

Most of the people worried have been working from home for the last 16 months or retired anyway. Time to get back to normal and live with it.

Wow! That's a pretty selfish attitude! So if we're retired, we should just stay at home? What about the vulnerable? Some of us have lives too!

RoisinD · 19/07/2021 10:10

The lack of respect from some towards shop staff who continued to work while so many were cocooned at home is sad. Shop staff were lauded as frontline workers. They have to wear masks all day but some customers will not wear a mask for the few minutes they are in a store. Where's the consideration and respect?

Mydogdoesntlisten · 19/07/2021 10:10

I won't be wearing one. I can't see how anyone can still think they're effective given the daily case numbers. In terms of showing respect for shopworkers, I think the more of us who don't wear them, the more likely shops are not to require their staff to. It must be a nightmare wearing one all day.

Devondonkey · 19/07/2021 10:11

@Frittataz

Not really. There are poorly people in hospital who are genuinely vulnerable so in this instance I don’t mind wearing a mask, and like I said, the letter I got from the hospital states masks are required. Shops will not have signs outside stating masks are required and I assume people who are poorly will not be out shopping.
This is odd. You’re happy to wear a mask to protect the “genuinely vulnerable”. But how on earth can you tell who the unfortunate shop assistant will have to interact with. It’s like you genuinely still don’t understand how this works.
claralara42 · 19/07/2021 10:12

@Frittataz

But they’re not a legal requirement and if I am asked to wear one in shops I will gently remind them of that.
And they can gently remind you that they don't have to let you in without one. YABVU.
HalzTangz · 19/07/2021 10:12

@Frittataz

If thousands of people can attend indoor nightclubs and indoor sporting events then I don’t see people should be expected to wear a mask to go shopping.
Those people all had to prove a negative covid result. That's the difference
Janus · 19/07/2021 10:13

@starfro I always wonder how much Chris Whitty is persuaded to say something that matches whatever the government are proposing?? I bet if he had free speech he would say the timing of this is awful.
To be honest, I have teenagers and early 20s and if they want to go clubbing I can’t blame them with the 2 years of no life they’ve had to protect the older generation. But they still wear masks in every indoor setting.
I understand that things have to open up at some point and when do we choose the right time but the huge rising numbers tell me this is not the right time. I’m not expecting this to go well!!

HalzTangz · 19/07/2021 10:13

@Frittataz

If I was selfish then I wouldn’t have stuck to the rules at all from the start would I. I have wore masks, kept my distance, not seen my family for months etc. If I really didn’t give a shit about other people why would have I done that?
So why stop protecting people now then
HoldingTheDoor · 19/07/2021 10:13

I've been thinking that all along. They can make life so difficult, to put it mildly, for deaf people. I'm not hearing impaired but I have processing disorders and I have often have enough of a struggle to hear exactly what people are saying. The masks make it much harder.

HalzTangz · 19/07/2021 10:15

People who are vunerable are still able to work, you do realise that don't you. Being vunerable doest excempt you from not turning up to work

My line manager likes to give everyone ‘gentle reminders’ with every task set.

He ought to give himself a gentle reminder or two because most tasks have been completed as standard by everyone but him long before the thought crossed his tiny mind.
