Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:46

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

What a sad world we live in now , you have all been manipulated!!!!!!

1940s · 19/07/2021 09:18

@Frittataz

But they’re not a legal requirement so how can they do that? If I really wanted to I could simply lie and say that I’m exempt but why should I have to do that.
Just like you can be refused entry to sainsburies for being barefoot or not wearing a t shirt. You would'nt be allowed to walk into Westfield in a bikini for example so they can dictate rules despite it not being 'illegal'
godmum56 · 19/07/2021 09:18

Yabu and asshat

@Frittataz

But they’re not a legal requirement and if I am asked to wear one in shops I will gently remind them of that.
Well don't be surprised if they gently remind you that it's their premises, their policies, and their rules.

There are three pages on this thread in only three hours!

That shows the strength of feeling in this subject.

There are many things in life which arent law but we just do them. Like queuing in an orderly fashion, like tipping your hairdresser for an excellent cut, like holding a door for someone. None of these things have the extreme financial, health and moral repercussions of spreading covid to vulnerable groups of people that not wearing a mask can. Whether or not it’s law.

The rest of the U.K. is continuing making them a legal requirement as figures are rising and it’s the vulnerable who will be forced into isolation if we don’t all continue to think of others and wear masks.

Just wear the mask. Please.

bendmeoverbackwards · 19/07/2021 09:20

@Frittataz you say you are ‘not a knob’ but your decision to ditch the mask now when case numbers are very high is not a good decision.

You are aware that over 1,200 scientists around the world think the UK’s unlocking/freedom day is nuts??

Pissinthepottyplease · 19/07/2021 09:20

Try rephrasing it OP
“I am unreasonable to say fuck the lives of those adults and children who are ECV a who are unable to have the vaccine because I would rather not wear a face mask?”

LemonRoses · 19/07/2021 09:22

@Cam77

No, i actually don’t see the benefit of masks, I never have. I’ll wear one in a clinical setting simply because in my area masks are still a requirement unless you’re exempt.

Studies show that they lower infection rates. I think that would be the benefit.

Then you (original commenter) don’t bother looking at evidence and are one of the reasons we’re about to go into another wave with predictions of 40k deaths this cycle.

In addition the use of masks has significantly reduced other transmissible infection rates - flu, colds, RSV etc and the increased awareness of IPC measures has significantly reduced non-airborne infection spread too - norovirus, for example.

None of us ‘like’ masks, they’re a bit hot and itchy. They don’t reduce the ability to breathe and there are very few who cannot wear them. They are a very easy way to protect people and allow greater freedoms.
I hope most shops and leisure venues continue to refuse to admit non mask wearers.

Goady fucker thread. If a shop still wants you to wear a mask, then they can just refuse to let you on. You clearly don’t give a shit about others. Delightful. No wonder rates are shooting.

Seasidemumma77 · 19/07/2021 09:22

Those of us working in most retail settings still have to wear a mask for our entire shift, unlike customers who just need to wear it for the time they are in store.

heidipi · 19/07/2021 09:22

There are loads of things you're legally allowed to do that are also selfish - push past people in the street, queue jump, leave toilets unflushed etc etc. People who are in hospital including on ICUs now are mainly young enough to be unvaccinated or partly vaccinated - just like lots of staff in retail, hospitality and public transport, so if you wear a mask you'll help protect them. But y'know, you don't have to. Simple as that.

Not to mention every NHS doctor and nurse whom I have asked.

JackGrealishIsMyNewManCrush · 19/07/2021 09:23

@Wheresmrpenguin

This is absolute madness, the fear, the guilt tripping. Its not normal. How long can this be expected to go on for, what if cases never go down and this is life now, we need to get on without living in fear. I need to go out today and all of a sudden I'm absolutely dreading it. Judged for wearing one, judged for not. It reminds me of earlier lockdown where if you didn't clap you didn't care about the NHS, or if you don't report your neighbours you're directly the problem. Feeling trapped and judged isn't a life worth living anymore.
I'm sorry you feel like this, but I certainly don't, and I doubt many others do either.

And to suggest (as someone did further back,) that mask wearing (or not) is linked to education and class is ludicrous. Why do people always come out with this drivel on mumsnet? Confused

echt · 19/07/2021 09:24

And no, mask wearing has nothing to do with educational attainment, what a thick comment

You know this do you? Unless you can provide proof against their question, which was asking about research, then you're no better than they are.

@H65447788888 what a sad world we live in that people ignore scientists and experts that perhaps might know a little more than we do.

But like shops, not legally enforceable.

What you're saying is you wouldn't kick up a fuss in a hospital but will in a supermarket. Why is that? Do you have so little respect for shop workers?

Wolfiefan · 19/07/2021 09:24

Businesses are perfectly entitled to ask you to leave the premises for all kinds of reason. Not dressed appropriately. Inappropriate behaviour. Not wearing a mask.
Plus if they feel they want to protect staff by asking you to wear a mask it’s not reasonable to refuse.
They are a PITA. I have asthma and anxiety and fucking hate them. But I shall continue to wear one whenever it’s requested.

trancepants · 19/07/2021 09:24

@vixeyann

I just don't understand the absolute fuss people make about wearing a mask. It is the most basic thing and takes seconds and might just help cases from rocketing off the scale. My 7 year has always managed fine, never had a moan, yet grown adults revel in moaning or refusing to wear them. I also don't understand someone posting about it when you are going to do what you want regardless.....
I don't know. I'm 42 and I feel mask wearing may be accelerating my fine lines and wrinkles. I feel I have to be more careful with my skin because it feels more irritated by the masks. I find I need to use way more moisturiser and then that leads to more need for cleansing to avoid clogged pores, etc. I do also wear one for indoor exercise which is honestly dire, especially in this weather.

I hate, hate, hate mask wearing. And realistically as I had Covid and two shots of Pfizer, at this stage mask wearing is more performative than anything. But I do understand that with the unknowns of Delta, it just makes sense to keep wearing them for a little while longer.

I really can't wait to ditch them when it is genuinely safe though.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 19/07/2021 09:25

@snowqu33n

Can’t get a vaccine here, supplies are limited to the elderly for now. UK posters amaze me.

It’s all “What?! I can’t go on holiday abroad?!” And then “How dare people suggest I wear a mask in moderately warm weather!”

It’s a global pandemic and you’re part of that. Why not make a little effort for the sake of everyone?

We are dealing with the Kent variant already on the other side of the world. It’s on people like you if you incubate another one.

Please don't confuse the minority of posters that put their own comfort/happiness before the safety of others.

Hopefully you mean 'SOME UK posters'.

I hope the vaccine supplies in your country increase soon.

Twoforthree · 19/07/2021 09:25

@Marimaur

I don't think there’s a legal requirement but I’m still wearing one in shops/public transport cos I can, I’m not an arse and can also read a line graph
Exactly

Your choice, I’ll stick to wearing mine for now.
