Ditching my mask from today except for in hospital settings

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:46

Clearly this is fine legally speaking but AIBU to expect not to be asked to wear a mask from today onwards? I’ll wear one when attending hospital/doctors appointments but that’s it that’s were i draw the line. I shouldn’t be expected to explain myself right? I’ve wore a mask from the beginning and stuck to every rule. I won’t be rushing out to go to nightclubs as I didn’t do that before covid and i don’t suddenly feel the need to surround myself (closely) with lots of other people but I am looking forward to taking my daughter shopping and going to the cinema without having to wear a mask.

I think you still need to wear them on public transport

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:51

I drive so I rarely need to take public transport thankfully.

Coldilox · 19/07/2021 06:51

Plenty of shops, public transport etc will still require them.

ILoveYouILoveYouIDo · 19/07/2021 06:52

I was just out shopping and a safety Marshall for that store, stopped a girl who wasn't wearing a mask. Explaining to her the dangers etc which I thought was wrong.

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:52

But they’re not a legal requirement and if I am asked to wear one in shops I will gently remind them of that.

Each to their own but I'll still be wearing mine. Rates are going through the roof.

CovidCorvid · 19/07/2021 06:53

Most shops have asked that people continue to wear them to protect the staff. I feel sorry for staff who may feel quite vulnerable over this so am happy to wear them still.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 19/07/2021 06:53

Supermarkets are asking that you wear one, but I don't know if others will.

Purplestorm83 · 19/07/2021 06:54

I think the shops have the legal right to refuse to serve you if you refuse to wear a mask

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:54

Yes I think it was wrong too. A friend of mine has bipolar and she was stopped some time ago now by a covid marshal who demanded she explain herself so in other words tell him why exactly she was exempt. She was rather upset and didn’t go back for a while.

Gently remind the staff? How unpleasant for them having to deal with you

There shop there rules

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:55

But they’re not a legal requirement so how can they do that? If I really wanted to I could simply lie and say that I’m exempt but why should I have to do that.

You can refuse but then they can refuse you entry.

So yes it’s your decision but it will limit where you can go.

I would personally prefer to put on a mask and go wherever I want/need

Coldilox · 19/07/2021 06:55

They are not a legal requirement, but any shop can refuse you entry if you decline to wear one.

CovidCorvid · 19/07/2021 06:56

@Frittataz

You’re right, but if someone is concerned enough to remind you I think it’s fairly arsehole behaviour to say no, I don’t have to do it. 🤷‍♀️

I just think it isn’t hard to do, I’ve managed to do it for months I can carry on doing it again. One local business to me was begging people on fb to carry on wearing masks when visiting their shop. She said if she or anyone in her small team needs to isolate again the shop will shut due to lack of staff and it won’t survive. This is someone’s business which could be ruined.

LordEmsworth · 19/07/2021 06:56

Well obviously YABU to expect everyone to tell you it's fine, your desire not to wear a mask outweighs other people's desire not to catch Covid from you. I mean if you're going to do it anyway, not sure why you need us all to know about it?

User5827372728 · 19/07/2021 06:56

@Frittataz

But they’re not a legal requirement so how can they do that?

No, but businesses can make up and enforce their own rules to enter

pastabest · 19/07/2021 06:56

I don't particularly like wearing them either but will continue to wear them as a courtesy to staff in places I need to visit if they want me to.

DisgruntledPelican · 19/07/2021 06:56

Shops can have individual policies on how they wish their customers to present and behave, though?
GnomeyGnome · 19/07/2021 06:56

I was having this discussion with DH this morning. We'll both continue wearing wherever we're asked to, not a problem for us. But I said I feel sorry for the staff that are probably going to be abused even more now if they try to enforce their companies rules because it isn't "the law". But I think I'm correct in saying that stores can have in place any policy they like regarding who can enter their private business? Just like when places require a certain dress code etc. So if a shop requires a face mask to be worn to enter their premises then that's what I'll do. No big deal.

drpet49 · 19/07/2021 06:56

* But they’re not a legal requirement and if I am asked to wear one in shops I will gently remind them of that.*

^Hopefully they will gently remind you that they don’t have to serve you.

Beendownthisroadmorethantwice · 19/07/2021 06:56

But they’re not a legal requirement and if I am asked to wear one in shops I will gently remind them of that.

And they can gently remind you that it’s their shop and their rules.

I hate wearing a mask, but in shops I’m considerate of the people who have to work there. While you may be in and out in ten minutes they are stuck breathing in everyone else’s droplets.

I’m totally for restrictions lifting but wearing a mask in a shop is no big deal

Coldilox · 19/07/2021 06:56

They can refuse you entry because they can have whatever they want as a condition of entry. Just like a nightclub can say no trainers, no jeans etc.

Frittataz · 19/07/2021 06:57

I wouldn’t be at all unpleasant I’d simply remind them that face masks are no longer legally enforceable. Or would it be better if I lied and told them I’m exempt? As either way from today I won’t be wearing masks except for in clinical settings.

They may gently remind you that you're on private property and they have a legal right to refuse you entry.

But they probably won't, they'll just mutter "Fucking 'Karen'." and bitch about you on social media.
