To waste my weekend hiding from the baking hot sun?

Moaned about the weather and the sunshine is here by the bucket load this weekend. Am I having a day out somewhere lovely, taking a walk somewhere pretty or enjoying the garden. No. I'm indoors trying to keep cool avoiding the sun until the garden gets some shade.

Am I the only one wasting their weekend avoiding the sun?

Weather doesn't bother me one way or the other. I wouldn't go out in heat unnecessarily but it's nice for people who are near a beach, especially those with children.

VickyEadieofThigh · 18/07/2021 16:03

We have a dog recuperating from major spine surgery - we have to stay indoors for his benefit (only brief wee trips in the garden for most of the day - 15 minute walks on grass at either end when it's cool), unfortunately.

And we are a 5 minute walk from the beach!

DahliaMacNamara · 18/07/2021 16:04

Urgh. Had to take the car down for petrol just now, so that we can drive the dog to the woods later this evening. Fuck, that was hot. Dog is loving the heat and wants me to go outside and keep him company. Sorry, Dog.
I've left my cold drink out in the kitchen so that I get some exercise.

@SpongeBarb

There is no middle ground in our country though. I don't want November-like wind and rain, but I also don't want 30 degrees.
100% agree!

Why does it have to be like this?? Why can’t it be gently sunny and 22 degrees?

Rainy weather for ever and then the only alternative seems to be this shit, desert like temperatures. I’m in the South East and it’s like the depths of Hades out there today.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 18/07/2021 16:10

I live in the south east and the garden and back of my house faces full on south. I hate getting in a sweaty mess, too much sun gives me a headache and I get fed up applying greasy sun lotion - can you guess where I am? Yep, hiding indoors with the windows and curtains shut at the back and me hiding out at the front of the house keeping cool.

HackAttack · 18/07/2021 16:11

I've been wild swimming that helps with managing the heat

HyggeTygge · 18/07/2021 16:17

@PuppyMonkey

Another one hiding in a dark room.

Why does it have to be either pissing it down or 35 degrees in the shade in summer now?

Who can actually enjoy this kind of heat? I can’t eat, can’t sleep at night, can’t relax, it’s hideous.

Agreed! Would love months of pleasant 20-22c, minimal rain (maybe at night) and a gentle breeze, not flood/heatwave/flood/heatwave.

I've been waiting to go to the beach for ages but there's no shade, and constantly applying sun cream on small kids in the (too hot to walk on) sand does not appeal.

Luckily we have trees in the garden that provide decent shade so we just stay at home but it does seem like a waste when it's like this for a whole week. Local park has zero shade as well.

Meruem · 18/07/2021 16:20

I’m in my room with a blackout curtain and portable air con. I did go in the garden from 7pm until 10pm yesterday but it was still baking hot. I’m in London so evenings are just a build up of the day time heat! I did sit under my tree though which was nice but had to shower after as I was hot and sweaty.

I have my desk in my room (for wfh) and an armchair so it becomes my bed sit during heatwaves. I venture out for the bathroom and supplies. Downstairs is open plan so would need the proper built in air con, a portable one isn’t powerful enough. So I am confined to the one room.

I don’t see it as wasting the day. I would get no pleasure from being out in this. As horrid as it feels at the time, we don’t get many weeks a year where it’s 30+ so if on those days I just lounge, I don’t feel guilty.

StarCourt · 18/07/2021 16:23

32 degrees here

SweatyBetty20 · 18/07/2021 16:23

I’m too fair and it’s too hot. Plus it’s the last stage of the Tour De France, so I’m watching that and will head down to the allotment later to water things.

wildthingsinthenight · 18/07/2021 16:29

I'm with you. Watered garden at 7 and will do it at 10. But will be indoors all day curtains drawn and fan/air con on.
I don't think I'm wasting the day though. I'm preserving my sanity and preventing bursting into flames!
Hate Summer

Tereseta · 18/07/2021 16:32

I should be hiding with a fan in my knickers but instead I'm trapped in a sweltering car on the m5

Cheeseismymiddlename · 18/07/2021 16:34

I’ve hidden in the house all day because there is no escaping the heat in the middle of the wide open countryside that surrounds us. And I’m sulking hard because this time last week I was in Cornwall and it rained hard all day with no let up. Next two days drizzly rain then the fucking sun came out the day we left. Angry

Jenasaurus · 18/07/2021 16:34

I think people that look forward to the sunshine only do so if they are on holiday and can take a swim to cool off or have air con to retreat to in a hotel, if you are having to do housework or other things, what to exercise etc all of that is more painful in the heat. My DD and her BF went on a picnic yesterday and there is a triangle on her back that she missed with sun cream and now has a painful sunburnt back. My DS told me his GF is also sufferring with sunburn despite applying suncream. I always prefer the cold weather as you can add layers to keep warm but when your hot its not normally acceptable to strip naked while mowing the front lawn.

Thebookswereherfriends · 18/07/2021 16:35

We went out at 9am, got back at been at 10 ish, been home since, going down to the beach shortly now it’s not so boiling. It’s not wasting the weekend if you wouldn’t enjoy being out in it.

Cheeseismymiddlename · 18/07/2021 16:35

I didn’t add, the poor dog has developed kennel cough ( I assume) and his honking cough is getting on my nerves now. Angry

BoredZelda · 18/07/2021 16:36

I hate sunny weather. I’m not a fan of outside unless I actually have something to do but being inside on a sunny day I can hear my mother saying I should be outside on a day like this.

lynsey91 · 18/07/2021 16:36

I really hate the weather in this country. Wet, windy and cold for months and months, a couple of nice warm sunny days and then wham red hot blistering heat.

I hate the cold rainy days. I detest windy days. I like it warm and sunny but as soon as it goes over about 24 degrees it is too hot for me.

I have barely moved from the settee all day and on the couple of occasions I have I have been sweating like a pig.

I would still rather have this than snow or constant rain

Cheeseismymiddlename · 18/07/2021 16:39

@Tereseta, hope you are headed somewhere nice and get to enjoy the sunshine when you are there. Smile

JustMeAndWheatley · 18/07/2021 16:40

Very sensible to hide. Anyone out in this is crazy imho.

Mogloveseggs · 18/07/2021 16:40

I don't cope with heat.
Add in I'm having a rough time after my second jab yesterday and it's the time of the month Sad
I made it to Ds cricket match this morning but I've bowed out of the football presentation his dad's taken him as it's in the park.
Just put more cold water in the paddling pool. Going to get the chairs out and go out my feet in.

Manzanilla55 · 18/07/2021 16:43

I find it far too hot to be outside. I am enjoying The Good Witch on Netflix which will probably take longer to watch than however long the heatwave lasts!

CrowdedMouse · 18/07/2021 16:46

YANBU - and my dog agrees with us!

Doubledoorsontogarden · 18/07/2021 16:49

I booked cinema, 2 hours in the cool, bliss!

chaosrabbitland · 18/07/2021 16:49

i was alright yesterday . but its too much for us today , dd and i had a quick dip in the pool , but shes not good in hot sun and it didnt last long , iv got a huge garden that gets all the full sun until at least 6 pm when it starts to move around to front of house , had a headache most of the day so we have apart from the dip stayed in the shaded house with fans on
