Walking with my dogs and children and saw a dad and I assume older sibling swinging 3/4 year old by her arms.

I mentioned in passing that it’s advised not to swing young children by their arms until at least 7 as there’s a risk of dislocation of elbows.

I try not to interfere with other people’s parenting generally but I would have hated them to accidentally hurt her.

Should I just have left them to it?

@Italiangreyhound

You were right to say something.
yes, parents become public property and a free target for any busy body to give their unwanted opinion Hmm
Morgoth · 17/07/2021 15:59

What is it with these kind of threads today?!

MisterMeaner · 17/07/2021 15:59

I once had a neighbour (not a stranger, but not someone I knew well) warn me not to carry my child on my shoulders, as there is a risk of neck injury to the parent (she had firsthand experience of this). I was glad she told me.

Why shouldn't we look out for one another? OP as long as you were polite and spoke up out of concern, not judgement, I think you did the right thing.

Trying to weigh up how you “mention in passing” to a complete stranger and how you then follow up with “I try not to interfere with other people's parenting”

I generally (99.9%) of the time mind my own business but when you see something dangerous do you just ignore it?

A couple of days ago.

And you’ve been thinking about it ever since? Confused even though the man was very nice and didn’t react badly?

I’d have told you you were being a shit dog owner by walking them in the worst heat of the day... Or just to fuck off, depending how I felt. 😌

No not thinking about it ever since, how weird! Just thought about it now and wondered what others thought. I’m currently trapped under a breastfeeding baby so got time on my hands!

Try harder.

Could have been a very petite 7 year old.

Butt out.

It was like 16 degrees the other day. What the fuck are you talking about?

I didn’t see your post. I assumed it was contemporaneous. I can’t imagine why you’d post about this days after the event. Confused
Comeondoit · 17/07/2021 16:20

This is such a non event it's hilarious.

OP stuck beak in.
Other parent wasn't fazed.

No drama

ivfgottwins · 17/07/2021 16:24

And how many children have actually had their elbows dislocated 🤔 because I've seen parents doing that to children under 7 for decades?!🤷‍♀️

Uramaki · 17/07/2021 16:24

I wouldn't give it any more thought if he thanked you.

FunTimes2020 · 17/07/2021 16:26

Nasty people on here today. Mumsnet didn't used to be like this. OP, you didn't commit a crime, ignore the playground bullies.

Want2beme · 17/07/2021 16:26

Wouldn't've minded you telling me OP. I'm a wiser person for knowing.

It’s really common apparently. I used to do it with my older daughter and stopped after I was told it was dangerous.

@supersonicginandtonic

I wouldn't have been as polite. How I parent my child has absolutely nothing to do with a nosey 🐄 in the park. Concentrate on your own children and I'll concentrate on mine 🙄
Only a really terrible parent puts their own pride/ego above child safety.

Since when did child safety become a parenting choice? If you noticed someone feeding a baby dirt from the floor would you also keep quiet because no one needs told how to parents? Absurd.

Twinkie01 · 17/07/2021 16:33

Is it really super dangerous?? Jesus I'm surprised my DCs or I for that matter don't just have bloody stumps. The fun we used to have swinging them and I remember walking up the front of my favourite uncle until I could tip all the way over whilst he held my arms!!

GettingUntrapped · 17/07/2021 16:33

Nothing to worry about. Totally normal. Sometimes joyous.
