Ok so maybe it's this muggy weather but I'm reliving my youth club years asking Alexa to play tunes circa late 80s\early 90s and DM popped up. Now whilst I only know and love a handful of their mainstream albums I've been reminded of how horny a combo his voice and some of their lyrics were.

goes to sit in garden and cool down <

Just me?

@AngelsWithSilverWings thanks for the insight! I also think those sort of environments increase creativity and that’s why many amazing bands are from small towns.
I do love British music and culture , one of the reasons I decided to come and study here Smile

SoftDay · 17/07/2021 10:13

"Home" is another favourite of mine. It's sung by Martin. Just exquisite.

Agree that they are superb live. This thread is so lovely. Thanks, OP!

NoWordForFluffy · 17/07/2021 10:21

I love Depeche Mode and concur with all the Dave - and Martin! - love! 🥵🥵

I passed my driving test wearing a Depeche Mode t-shirt, back in the day!

If anybody has plans to go to Tallinn, this bar is a must!

Piffle11 · 17/07/2021 12:35

First band I saw live, when I was 16. Utterly incredible, and his voice is perfect. Sounded exactly like the records. He has such charisma on stage, he truly is amazing. A very underrated front man.

AutistGoth · 17/07/2021 14:38

@cheermonger Do you mean Fletch? He's still around. He celebrated his 60th birthday this month.

EyesOfABlueDog · 17/07/2021 14:48

I love DM too. Never Let Me Down Again is my favourite DM song & one of my all-time favourite concert moments 🖤 🎶 I have watched the best live version YouTube clip so many times.

episcomama · 17/07/2021 14:58

Songs of Faith and Devotion is one of my favorite ever albums. Dave Gahan's voice is criminally under-recognized.

Looubylou · 17/07/2021 15:37

Seriously not sexy, but I was lusting over Terry Hall, Robert Smith, David Sylvian. Each to their own. Depeche Mode music was OK but not top 10 for me.

KarlMaldensNose · 17/07/2021 15:48

Aaaw just look at that little face❤️❤️

This thread had stirred up feelings I thought were long dormant. 😂 must be the weather (goes for cold shower)

David Gahan + (many of) Depeche Mode lyrics = Hot
KarlMaldensNose · 17/07/2021 15:57

@NoWordForFluffy
That’s interesting

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 17/07/2021 15:58

@UnitedRoad

Get Alexa to play ‘A question of lust’

So hot

That’s Martin Gore. His voice is so plaintive on that and also Sometimes. Stirs your heart. Dave Gahan otoh stirs somewhere else Grin
MarieIVanArkleStinks · 17/07/2021 16:02

I thought Martin Gore was the main lyricist, although I think his words suit Dave Gahan's voice perfectly. But you're right, his lyrics are SO sexy and sometimes really tortured and dark. ('In Your Room' - wow). I have to confess it did make me wonder what he might be like ...

Finally saw this band live a year or so before lockdowns started, and I'm so grateful I did. Absolutely worth waiting three decades for! And I agree with the PP about 'Faith and Devotion': sterling album.

I'm liking this thread.

QueSeraSarah · 17/07/2021 16:06

I'm so in love Halo Never let me down again is probably the best song ever

KarlMaldensNose · 17/07/2021 16:09

@QueSeraSarah
Just listened to the Eric Prydz remix
I love a remix but I’m not I impressed, it doesn’t capture the essence of the original at all

Wishingwell75 · 17/07/2021 16:29

I have noticed over the years that women who fancy him are particularly evangelical about him and extremely loyal and long term lovers of DG.
Whilst I fully admire this commitment I have to say I don't get it.
Sorry, I know it's sacrilegious to admit this.
What bothers me is that on paper he really is my type, dark, handsome, talented and (formally?) troubled.
I am also the right age!
So, what recommendations can you give me - music wise and also any standout interviews or does he really need to be seen live for the magnetism to translate?
Yours hopefully, WW 75 😁💙😂

Floisme · 17/07/2021 17:02

He looked about 12 when he started out and then next thing I know, he's like the necromancer.

KarlMaldensNose · 17/07/2021 17:10

Just found this following my renewed DM rabbit hole thanks to this thread

Fantastic remixes, superbly mixed - get it on LOUD and party

KarlMaldensNose · 17/07/2021 17:12

@Floisme

Hotter than Venus though 🔥

@Looubylou

Seriously not sexy, but I was lusting over Terry Hall, Robert Smith, David Sylvian. Each to their own. Depeche Mode music was OK but not top 10 for me.

My main loves were the Batt brothers: David Sylvian and Steve Jansen. I'm 50 now and I still swoon over those two like I did as a teenager. They're musically gifted, still beautiful in their older years (Steve especially makes me want to weep he's so attractive), arty, etc... I listen to David's voice and he melts me.

David Gahan makes me want to jump him.

It's possible to appreciate them differently.

KarlMaldensNose · 17/07/2021 17:53

Roddy Frame too, especially when he’s singing ‘how men are’
Think we need an 80’s men thread (if that’s not too controversial) ?

KarlMaldensNose · 17/07/2021 17:55

@elp30
Heartbreaking about Mick Karn Japan were a brilliant band - Quiet Life what a song

mathanxiety · 17/07/2021 18:16

I do think they are one of the UK’s most underrated bands too! They are massive globally

YY they play DM all the time on a local very good rock/prog station (US).

CuriousaboutSamphire · 17/07/2021 18:29

I know I'm late but Barrel of a Gun runs through my head a lot. That extended note...

... and I met him/them way back when they were still very 'preppy'. Our social circles overlapped a little for about a year. He was one of those young men that young women would have condemned as 'nice'. Oh, how wrong I was 😁

CatsForLife · 17/07/2021 18:37

Violator is my favourite ever album. World in my Eyes Star
