To put weedkiller in a water pistol and nuke neighbours lillies?

Mumteedum · 15/07/2021 21:22

Obviously I won't. I just want to vent.

Next door neighbour is a gifted gardener. He grows monster lillies. Each plant is 7-8 feet high (it's above the fence). The plant nearest my house is right next to the fence and about 2 metres from my back door.

I can count over 20 budding flowers already in the bit above the fence. There are at least 6 of these plants..maybe more. So I would estimate that each plant must have up to 80 flower heads. That's 480 liliies.

Its hot and I need windows open but I'm sat wheezing and I've got a headache. I never have to take my inhaler apart from now.

My house stinks of them.

Can I nuke them? Please 🙏 😁

They're seriously poisonus to cats too so y'know. I wouldn't be against this.

LongTimeMammaBear · 15/07/2021 21:30

Have you told the neighbour you’re allergic?

Ponoka7 · 15/07/2021 21:31

Weedkiller kills off pollinating insects, so for that reason no. People should consider planting placement, lilies are an irritant.

AdultHumanWhale · 15/07/2021 21:34

Weed killer no good.

Destroy them with fire!!!

(for real though speak to neighbour about them)

LizzieSiddal · 15/07/2021 21:36

Go and tell him you’re allergic to them and they are making you wheezy!

Waspsarearseholes · 15/07/2021 21:37

I don't know if it will be any good to you but you can get 'hayfever screens' that fix to your windows (apologies, I can't remember the correct name of them). The idea is that they let the air in but keep the pollen out. I bought some for my sister who suffers every summer.

Ohh thanks. That might be worth a shot. I think it's the smell that triggers it. My hayfever has been non existent in recent years.

Yes of course I would speak to my neighbour but I just don't feel he'd be receptive. He's a nice man in many ways but his garden is his absolute pride and joy. I can't see him giving up his lillies or even moving them as it would ruin the arrangement. That said, the ones nearest haven't opened yet so I'll have to see. I may have to speak to him. I just don't want any bad feeling. He's quite opinionated.

Anything that overhangs a fence on to your side of the property you can cut down.

Unfortunately he can grow what he wants in his own side of the garden.

Mumteedum · 15/07/2021 22:09

Yeah I know, of course he can grow what he likes. He's too good at it! His garden is stunning...and sadly lillies grow straight upwards.

I'll just have to suffer and try not to choke when he ask me if I've seen his beautiful displays 🤐

OP posts:
godmum56 · 15/07/2021 22:19

Has he grown them before? I used to grow normal lillies but can't any more because of lily beetle which are disgusting things. I wouldn't wish evil on a fellow gardener but its being a dreaful year for them this year...maybe his lillies will get them too

Pbbananabagel · 15/07/2021 22:20

I hate lillies.
Stinky aggressively cheerful bastards. YANBU

daisycottage · 15/07/2021 22:23

Vinegar would kill them.

Couchbettato · 15/07/2021 22:35

Lilies always do me in. Even when people buy a bouquet of flowers for me, I cringe deep inside when I see it has a yet-to-bloom lily.

They're absolutely beautiful flowers, but they should also be kept only by those who have 40 acres of land around them.

Yanbu

A single lily does not have 80 flower heads, you’re exaggerating. And you can’t insist that neighbours appease you by not growing any flowers in their own garden. Take a Piriton or something.

Timeforabiscuit · 16/07/2021 08:27

Absolutely have a word, it's antisocial in my book alongside bonfires on a hot day, and I don't think op is suggesting no flowers, just ones that don't bloody stink and cause her an allergic reaction!

Love gardening but hate the scent of lillies!

Ooh that’s your opener OP!
‘Sadly I haven’t, John, I’m terribly allergic to the lilies and they’re so close to the door that unfortunately I have to give my garden a wide berth when there out, such a pity as I’m sure they look lovely.’

LettyLoman · 16/07/2021 08:30

You could try speaking to him and explain your allergies and ask that once they’ve finished flowering this year, can he move them away from your your side and maybe put them near the bottom of his garden.

Mumteedum · 16/07/2021 08:33

Agreed @Couchbettato!

Look at the evil ones ... waiting to gas me. These are the nearest.

While I sympathise with OP about the smell, and lilies do smell strongly, I fail to see why someone shouldn't be planting something in their garden because it's poisonous for cats which they might not even have.

LakieLady · 16/07/2021 08:35

Is it this one, OP:

www.google.co.uk/search?q=tall+lily+varieties&sxsrf=ALeKk024EJx4jfhNrBcFD2uz1Gt4bCvWTA%3A1626420325623&source=hp&ei=ZTTxYM_EI4r5gQaeuIngCQ&iflsig=AINFCbYAAAAAYPFCddXk3x99iCtYzi9NhgILKhLk3gd6&oq=tall+lily+variet&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAEYADICCAAyBggAEBYQHjIGCAAQFhAeOgQIIxAnOgQILhAnOgUILhCRAjoFCAAQkQI6CAgAELEDEIMBOg4ILhCxAxCDARDHARCjAjoKCC4QxwEQowIQQzoECAAQQzoFCAAQsQM6BQguELEDOgIILjoKCC4QsQMQgwEQClCXGFijPWCTUGgAcAB4AIABd4gBgwqSAQQxNC4ymAEAoAEBqgEHZ3dzLXdpeg&sclient=gws-wiz

It looks amazing, but I can see how the scent could get to you. Some lily scents used to give me a headache and sometimes trigger a migraine.

Maybe ask him if he'd mind moving them to the other side of the garden next year, or a further down the garden so the scent has dissipated before it gets to your house.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/07/2021 08:37

My hayfever has been non existent in recent years.

I've had it for several weeks this year - normally only a day or so, and nowhere near as sneezy - and a lot of friends that get it regularly have said its been tons worse this year.
Hope the screens work if you try them - but still puts your garden out of use, which is a shame.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 16/07/2021 08:40

Urgh I hate lillies. They stink of piss. Couldn't bear it in the hot weather if they were stinking the place up. So for that yanbu.

TheQueef · 16/07/2021 08:41

Not sure it's relevant, I snip the pollen out when they flower it seems to help DS allergies.
Still honks like a hot funeral parlour though.
And it may piss neighbour off.
