To put weedkiller in a water pistol and nuke neighbours lillies?

Mumteedum · 15/07/2021 21:22

Obviously I won't. I just want to vent.

Next door neighbour is a gifted gardener. He grows monster lillies. Each plant is 7-8 feet high (it's above the fence). The plant nearest my house is right next to the fence and about 2 metres from my back door.

I can count over 20 budding flowers already in the bit above the fence. There are at least 6 of these plants..maybe more. So I would estimate that each plant must have up to 80 flower heads. That's 480 liliies.

Its hot and I need windows open but I'm sat wheezing and I've got a headache. I never have to take my inhaler apart from now.

My house stinks of them.

Can I nuke them? Please 🙏 😁

@1vandal2

They're seriously poisonus to cats too so y'know. I wouldn't be against this.
If I plant some lilies, will it stop all the local cats shitting in my garden?
Bin85 · 16/07/2021 15:09

I was given lilies once
DH threw them in the garden !

thelastgoldeneagle · 16/07/2021 15:17

Talk to him!

Maybe he could move them round the front of his house if they're in pots? You should be able to enjoy your garden too. And lilies do smell really strong. A lot of folk are allergic to them.

Eventually yes, as they will die!

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/07/2021 16:27

No the owners will buy new cats. The cat will die a painful death of kidney failure.

The owners will be devastated.

RampantIvy · 16/07/2021 16:36

Some of the responses from the cat haters on here are disgusting Hmm

HeavenHotel · 16/07/2021 16:39

Oh I do feel your pain OP, I get horrendous hay fever. But sadly think you're completely unreasonable to ask him to move them. It's his garden!!

What if you're allergic to dogs, should you tell him not to have a dog too. Oh wait ... that did happen on another thread!!

Have you tried the blue light things that go up your nose. I can not recommend them enough!!

Crispyturtle · 16/07/2021 16:58

There’s something so mumsnet about getting annoyed by someone growing flowers in their own garden

You get used to it - don’t take it personally!

To be honest I’m still amused at the thought of a cat being bold enough to harass several dogs in the same garden Grin

The birds they kill die painful deaths, but their owners don’t give two hoots about that. Will their owners be devastated enough to actually look after their cats and cat-proof theirs gardens? Probably not, most cat owners don’t care that much about their pets.
TSSDNCOP · 16/07/2021 20:39

Sorry mumsnetters I've got two cats, I grow lilies and keep cut ones in the house. Never killed a cat yet. You'll need to do better if you want to out cat the cat.

TSSDNCOP · 16/07/2021 20:41

I did once have a cat that liked to eat cut carnations. Nothing says I love you like having to pull a poo entombed carnation from a cats arse.

entropynow · 16/07/2021 20:58

@godmum56

Has he grown them before? I used to grow normal lillies but can't any more because of lily beetle which are disgusting things. I wouldn't wish evil on a fellow gardener but its being a dreaful year for them this year...maybe his lillies will get them too
I zapped mine with bug killer and the lily beetles didn't get em...

You have been lucky so far, but if one of your cats brushes against the lilies and then licks the pollen from their fur they can suffer kidney damage which can be bad enough to kill the cat.
TSSDNCOP · 16/07/2021 21:52

You are right, of course. Although my experience of lilies being quite a lot taller than cats does help.

DroopyClematis · 16/07/2021 22:05

Yanbu at all.
Lillies were spawned by the Devil, particularly Lilly trees.
They stink, cause breathing difficulties and are not native . Their anthers drop pollen which stains and is impossible to remove.
They induce Lilly beetle which is a dreadful beast.
I sympathise.

What product is this @HeavenHotel?

billy1966 · 16/07/2021 22:19

My husband has moved our lillies a few times and they have thrived.
They seem hardy.

GoWalkabout · 16/07/2021 22:20

'John, I have been dreading mentioning this because I don't want to be a bother at all - your beautiful lilies unfortunately give me an allergic reaction, this year and last year. I wonder if you know of any way to reduce the impact of the plants on me? Some people have mentioned removing the pollen for example, or different types, or different positioning, but not being a gardener I don't have your expertise. Would you let me know if you find out anything that might help me, or that you might be able to do when planning for future years? '

GreyhoundG1rl · 16/07/2021 22:24

@Mumteedum

Agreed *@Couchbettato*!

Look at the evil ones ... waiting to gas me. These are the nearest.

That doesn't look remotely antisocial to me Confused
Empressofthemundane · 16/07/2021 22:33

I don’t like lilies either. They smell too strong and make me sneeze. I have a cat who roams. I would have no concerns about my cat eating lilies. She’s not interested in anything that isn’t protein. She’s an obligate carnivore.

redfairy · 16/07/2021 23:01

Where are all these long legged cats that can brush up against lilies then lick their polleny fur? Tosh! Always had cats, always had lilies and no-one has died yet

Walking along the fence?

Walking underneath where the pollen drops down?

Notebooksarefabulous · 16/07/2021 23:15

Lilies make my mother very unwell. Just walking within a few metres of a bunch of them results in her being poorly. Shes not allergic to anything else. I would ask the neighbour if he is aware of the effect lillies can have on people.
If you and my mother were pals........ she visited you and you had your windows open you'd probably need to call an ambulance fairly promptly as he is growing so many of them. Not exaggerating. Whoever up thread suggested "taking a piriton" - no thats not going to work.

Tinpotspectator · 16/07/2021 23:29

I hope those are lillies and are not datura.
