To think its weird that Prince George, a 7 year old boy, came to a football match in a suit and tie?

Couldn't they put him in a casual t-shirt or a football shirt or even just a polo shirt? A full suit with a tie seems OTT especially as it wasn't an official engagement.

Of course it’s weird, but his whole lifecis and always will be weord. 🤷‍♂️

Comedycook · 13/07/2021 13:44

@RoseAndRose

Third in line to the throne and his father is president of the FA

I thought that went without saying!

Well you'd think
billyt · 13/07/2021 14:09

Personally, I'd ditch the Royal Box.

Bluntness100 · 13/07/2021 14:18

He looked like a happy healthy loved little kid. Who gives a shit what he was wearing. Such a judgey thread to start.

KingdomScrolls · 13/07/2021 14:19

I think it's weird so many people start threads about what a seven year old wears

RoseAndRose · 13/07/2021 14:20

That'll be the FA's call.

And even if they don't call it the Royal Box, there will still be a VIP box probably called the President's Box and with same dress code.

IcedPurple · 13/07/2021 14:27

This again? Really?

I thought he looked adorable. He's clearly a happy and much loved little boy. He was attending the match as the son of the President of the FA, in the VIP box. It would have been inappropriate for him to wear a tshirt.

And I don't get the fuss over the suit. As I said on one of the many other threads, little girls often dress up in miniature versions of adult dresses, and nobody thinks it's wrong. What's so terrible about a little boy occasionally wearing an outfit not that different from many school uniforms?

Username91 · 13/07/2021 14:29

Amazing how many mumsnet posters know the royal family personally as so many of you are sure that he wore a suit as he ‘wanted to look like his dad’.

Also, why bother commenting on multiple threads about a topic you think is ‘weird’? Interesting use of your time. I think much of what this family do is strange. Maybe he would have blended into the crowd too much if he’d worn a football shirt. The bank manager suit makes it clear that he isn’t the same as the rest of us peasants.

shouldistop · 13/07/2021 14:30

We've already had this exact same thread the other week

modurma123 · 13/07/2021 14:31

wearing normal clothes.

I suspect that the dress code will relax somewhat, when Charles becomes King, and more when William does. I think that the monarchy has got to change and modernise, if it wants to stay relevant and popular - and I know there are people who don’t think it is at all relevant or popular now - if it doesn’t change, their ranks will swell, and the move to get rid of the monarchy could become overwhelming.

I do think the monarchy has changed and modernised a lot during the Queen’s reign - but I suspect that, at her age, she doesn’t want to change much more, if at all, and feels she has made enough changes during her lifetime, so prefers to maintain the status quo, and leave more change/modernisation to Charles and William.

@Bloodypunkrockers - your question “what do you know that the rest of us don’t?” - about George becoming King - my answer would be that, unless something changes (the monarchy is abolished, he passes away, he decides to abdicate because he doesn’t want to be King) George is third in line to the throne, so after Charles and William die, he becomes King. Given that it would mean a big change in public opinion, and some major legislative change too, I would be surprised if we became a republic any time soon. That is just my opinion, of course, but I am not seeing a major public movement to abolish the monarchy.

I do think he could have worn an England shirt, and I suspect that would have been a very popular move. I wonder if his parents would have done this, but we’re constrained by the Queen’s rules - he was there as a working Royal, so had to follow the dress code.

ladygindiva · 13/07/2021 14:51

My mates sons 5 and 4 wore suits for her wedding to their dad. They loved it. This isn't any different imo. Just dressing up for a special event. Tbh, it's something he will be doing a lot of one day!

I think she meant how do you know he'll be the king of ENGLAND.

Binglebong · 13/07/2021 15:15

I read somewhere that he said he wanted to look like his dad (the scoring footage was adorable!) right down to finding a tie similar to the official FA one William wore. I think it also said the plan hadn't been for George to go but he begged!

I imagine it was the royal box dress code, but TBH I think it always looks odd, no matter the occasion, to see small children in a suit.

I actually thought it was cruel to take him, although maybe not thought through properly, rather than deliberately cruel. Obviously he enjoyed the goal, but poor thing looked devastated and fighting hard to hold it together at the end. I'm not sure you can ask for privavcy for your children and do that to them. At the very least someone should have taken him out of sight straight after the penalties

Okbye · 13/07/2021 15:24

You do know he's the future King, yes?!

Chippingbird23 · 13/07/2021 15:32

Disgusting! Doesn’t make him better than another human being does it. Got a long way to go before humanity realised bloodline isn’t a more important human being.

grapewine · 13/07/2021 15:37

He's not little Freddie from the local primary school - he's the future King of England!

Exactly.

  1. It was an official engagement, his father was there in his official capacity.
  2. There is a dress code.
  3. @MNHQ why are you allowing repeated criticism of a 7 year old’s apparel, not exactly in the spirit is it?

Don't be silly. It's not as though the TV cameras were panned on him. People's attention was on the players, not on a 7 year old.

And 'random' children are often filmed looking sad at events like these. It's a public venue. He did look disappointed, but he's only a kid. I'm sure he'd gotten over it by the time his chaufeur disgorged him at his palace.

jerometheturnipking · 13/07/2021 15:43

I imagine he'd be dressed rather formally if he attended Wimbledon in the Royal Box with his mum too. I honestly can't get worked up over it. His parents have been quite sensible as far as how they present the children publicly - it would make the children less recognisable when they're in public in their regular clothes with the nanny or whoever.

shouldistop · 13/07/2021 15:46

This is a good point, I bet no one would look twice at him when he's out wearing a marvel / Star Wars T-shirt as they only ever see him dressed very smartly.
It's a bit like the reason judges wear wigs and gowns. It makes them less recognisable in public.

KeepSmiling89 · 13/07/2021 15:51

He's a member of the royal family...it's what they do. What else would we expect...?
