Questions for white people: what is the problem with "taking the knee"

Flayn · 12/07/2021 17:39

  1. What is the problem with taking the knee
  2. How would you prefer athletes protest racism

I am a regular poster, under a changed name and speak 2nd language English - I know the passive aggressiveness some posters adopt for this topic.

Someone I know who isn't keen thinks it's "too American" and not something that comes naturally to Brits. He'd prefer standing with bowed head.

I have no strong feelings either way and think it should be up to the individual.

Nuffaluff · 12/07/2021 17:43

Answer from white person:

  1. There is no problem with taking the knee.

Please do not assume that all white people think the same.

Confusedandshaken · 12/07/2021 17:44

I'm a middle aged white lady. I've attended BLM demos and taken the knee. I admire the footballers for doing it.

BashfulClam · 12/07/2021 17:45

I’m whites and have no problem with it.

MaxwellsChocolate · 12/07/2021 17:45

I have zero problem with anyone taking the knee. I respect them for it.

Turdibacious · 12/07/2021 17:45

I think because historically, in Europe anyway, it's a gesture of subservience, like taking an oath of fealty to an overlord. So to me it seems an odd gesture to choose.

I would prefer to see people taking a stand against racism

Shapesorted · 12/07/2021 17:45

I don't think 'white people' have a collective opinion, we all have individual thoughts. I have no problem with it.

QueeniesCroft · 12/07/2021 17:45

I don't mind it at all, but I do have a tendency to forget what exactly it's about(I rarely watch any kind of sport and can be a little absent-minded). That's my problem though, and nothing to do with what the players are doing.

WhatTheFlap · 12/07/2021 17:45

Answer from a regular white person (me):
Absolutely nothing wrong with taking the knee and I judged those who didn’t above those who did.

Answer from my DM (who is a racist in denial):
Racism isn’t a problem in this country and they do it for attention.

🙃

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/07/2021 17:45

White person here. I have no problem. Anyone who does needs to have a word.

Birdkin · 12/07/2021 17:46

From my personal perspective there is no problem, in fact I support it!

However some white people don’t want to admit that we have a racism problem in this country

Saucery · 12/07/2021 17:46

I have no problem with it whatsoever. It’s clear and unequivocal and more prominent than bowing your head.
I’ve heard people complain it’s ‘too Americanized’ but I suspect that’s just an excuse. They’d rather not see it at all, then they don’t have to think about it.

Kanaloa · 12/07/2021 17:46
  1. There isn't a problem with taking the knee - I don't think so anyway.
  2. I think it would be great if more athletes - black and white - donated to charities and supported anti-racism campaigns. I sometimes feel, along with constant social media posts, celebrities think just saying something means they have helped. Often they could help in more practical ways. For example, I saw one celebrity who, while everyone else was posting black lives matter, black lives matter (with nothing else, just repeating that catchphrase) turned his instagram and social media over to different black activists to tell their story, using photos from protests and supporting black activists/photographers to tell their own story. It felt more meaningful, rather than just saying a catchphrase then moving on.
SoMuchForSummerLove · 12/07/2021 17:46

I don't think there is a problem with it.

ProfYaffle · 12/07/2021 17:47

I don't have the slightest problem with it personally.

I do wonder if Turdibacious's point, combined with a lack of awareness of how it came about, is why some people do.

GenderApostatemk2 · 12/07/2021 17:48

I wouldn’t ‘take the knee’ for any reason, under any circumstances, the thought of it stirs a visceral anger in me.
It’s a gesture of submission that doesn’t sit well with me at all.
No one could ever convince me that it’s a good thing to do.

It’s a platitude for the woke.

Lweji · 12/07/2021 17:48

Are you actually assuming that all white people have a problem with taking the knee?

White. About 50. Female.
No problem with anyone taking the knee. I think it's an excellent idea. A bit symbolic, but we all need to sign that racism is utterly not acceptable in any way we can.

FelicityPike · 12/07/2021 17:48

Nothing wrong with it.

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2021 17:48

I have no problem with people taking the knee.

Notimeforaname · 12/07/2021 17:48

I Have no problem with it at all

Ratalie · 12/07/2021 17:49

This meme seems to sum up the thought process of the fans who are booing.

Or they're just racist.

LittleRed53 · 12/07/2021 17:49

I've heard the argument that 'normal' working people aren't usually allowed to engage in protest/political activism during paid working hours, and while representing their employer or company, and therefore it should be the same for athletes. I can see the logic in this, and to be fair, athletes etc have plenty of opportunities off the field to express their personal views on any issue they like.

I guess it's down to each person's conscience, how they feel compelled to voice their feelings on any given issue.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 12/07/2021 17:49

It’s a powerfully passive defiance against racism and long may it continue. Goodness knows, the disgusting behaviour we’ve seen from racists shows it’s needed.

I can’t help with your questions though.

GetTaeFuck · 12/07/2021 17:50

No issue.

But like a PP said, with our long, long (too fucking long) monarchy history, it’s seen as a subservient pose.

MagentaRocks · 12/07/2021 17:50

No problem with it either.
