To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

Yeh I agree with you, definitely includes veg usually broccoli!

PickAChew · 12/07/2021 15:41

I find it weird to not have veg with any meal. That's how my beige food loving autistic ds eats.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/07/2021 15:41

"A jacket potato definitely needs some veg or salad with it otherwise what a disappointing meal!"

Well, that's just your taste. I find other fillings better on jacket potatoes. It needs to be something 'sloppy' in texture.

"Pasta - I always chuck peas and spinach in with pesto, tomato sauce is obviously made of tomatoes but I would probably serve broccoli or something on the side and I put mushrooms and peppers in my ragu."

Veg on the side is not the usual way to eat pasta, is it? You'd normally cook the veg into a sauce or with the pasta. And even if you don't, you must know that other people eat pasta and cheese.

NotMyCat · 12/07/2021 15:42

@Gwenhwyfar I would have tuna on a jacket potato with salad
I'm honestly astounded - and I'm not from a privileged background, but every time I read on here different threads about beige food etc people are "where is the veg?"
I don't particularly like it but I eat it because well, nutrients and also bulks out meals

A typical day for me would be
Breakfast with no veg Grin
Snack - apple
Lunch - with salad
Snack - banana
Tea - pasta bake would have onion, peppers, tomatoes, courgette etc, or meat and veg or jacket potato and salad or chicken salad
Pudding usually yoghurt and berries or an apple if I haven't had one earlier

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 12/07/2021 15:42

For clarity - I am including legumes, fruit, veg based sauces etc. in the broad category of 'veg'.

I can't speak to what people eat when I'm not there, but I've never been served a totally veg-less meal by friends/family.

I usually bung some salad on the side of tuna on baked potato. Or stir sweetcorn and onions in to the topping - makes it tastier.

This thread has shown me that I obviously eat differently to lots of people. I thought my diet was pretty normal, heavier on the sugar than it should be, but otherwise fairly standard. Obviously that's not the case.

And I grew up WC btw. My parents were always very hot on eating lots of veg.

Blossomtoes

it's competitive under-eating to find a normal portion of bangers and mash filling enough to make a meal? Confused

Ok then

DartmoorChef · 12/07/2021 15:43

We have cauliflower cheese with our bangers and mash

HarebrightCedarmoon · 12/07/2021 15:44

Yes, of course it implies veg. If someone asked me what I'd had for dinner I'd say sausages and mash and not necessarily say that I also had gravy, broccoli and peas! Or "We had some pasta," it doesn't just mean I cooked some pasta and we had it plain!

PattyPan · 12/07/2021 15:44

I just can't believe none of your friends would ever have something like tuna on baked potato. Must be how the other half lives I suppose...

It just doesn’t seem like a meal without splashing out the extra 80p for a lettuce and a cucumber 🤷‍♀️

I just typed it into google images. There were a few images including peas, none including broccoli thought the first ones were just bangers and mash.
Bagamoyo1 · 12/07/2021 15:46

I would expect veg with any main meal. It's a good idea to get kids into the habit of eating veg with main meals. It's all very well saying you can hide veg in smoothies and given them carrot sticks as a snack etc, but adults don't necessarily have carrot sticks after school or an apple at morning break, so it can be difficult to get your 5-a-day if you don't routinely have veg with a meal.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 12/07/2021 15:46

I have veg with all meals. Salad or frozen broccoli but fresh carrots! Apart from at the moment where I'm at my mum's caring for dad. He's eating like a king with his special frozen meals. (Specialist supplier) I'm living on toast, crisps and chocolate as I told mum I'd sort myself out with food but I can't be arsed to go shopping. At home every meal I do for ds has veg unless I can't be arsed it's a treat and I say, as a special treat no veg!! He's 18 and he's sorting himself out this week as I'm here at mum's. I doubt there'll be a veg in sight!

FlumpyPoodle · 12/07/2021 15:46

One of my favourite dinners when I'm all alone is cheese and crackers.

WaspRelatedEmergency · 12/07/2021 15:47

I'd be disappointed if my main meal didn't have veg. I do love vegetables though. When I had gestational diabetes I was told that half my plate should be veg, 1 quarter protein, and 1 quarter carbs and it kept the GD under control. I don't always do that now I'm not pregnant but I do try and keep it in mind.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/07/2021 15:47

My father, from a mining town, grew up eating lots of veg, and potatoes, with a little bit of meat as veg was grown at home or on the allotment and was cheap. Meat was expensive. Even mince and sausages.

Garfunkle · 12/07/2021 15:49

I always do some sort of veg with bangers and mash. I’m not bothered if others don’t but I would find it a bit odd to be served just sausage and potatoes with no veg 🥴

When I have fish and chips I like something with it. Either curry sauce or mushy peas.

You put the salad/veg next to the potato, not on top of it! It’s an accompaniment not as the filling.

Putting cheese on top of pasta dishes is normal but I don’t think just cheese and pasta is a proper meal. I have had side dishes of veg with pasta at other people’s houses or out too. I’m pretty sure I’ve had lasagne with a side dish of broccoli at a restaurant.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 12/07/2021 15:50

Growing up I don't think we had veg with every meal though and there was certainly loads of convenience food. I remember having a discussion about what makes a "square meal" in food tech and lying that I'd had some veg with my Dalepak grill and oven chips or whatever as the penny dropped that it wasn't a square meal without the veg!

Even now my DM sometimes starts to pick up the plates from the side before I've put the veg on.

Not being a meat eater (I do eat fish) I often plan what vegetables I'm having first and build the meal around that.

PurpleDaisies · 12/07/2021 15:51

Toast is not a meal. Maybe beans on toast would count as a meal, but again - it contains veg!

People are so snobby about toast for breakfast for lunch.

Scrambled or poached egg on toast is a great meal. Not a vegetable in sight.

I can't imagine someone putting a lettuce on top of their tuna. I'm just amazed that the poster has not seen a friend eating any of these common meals.
FlumpyPoodle · 12/07/2021 15:52

An egg is a true superfood. Goji berries be damned.

PattyPan · 12/07/2021 15:53

I don’t usually have breakfast but when I do I sometimes have toast with peanut butter and sliced banana, it’s a great combo and proves you can have toast and fruit Grin

Yep, and as I mentioned, with salmon a pretty healthy one. And nothing wrong with eating it in the evening either!
TableFlowerss · 12/07/2021 15:53

Peas with bangers and mash here too!

Of course you can, but you don't HAVE to.
