I'm glad the cat's ok but bloody cheeky buggers trying to get their vet's bill out of you! I'd like to have seen the reaction from the police if they told their story to them!

OP you need to film that cat jumping around and climbing all over your fence.

Oh and start putting your bins out early again Grin

Glittertwins · 16/07/2021 07:30

Just caught up and you do have an incredibly nasty neighbour.
Hope it settles down over the summer

Shelby2010 · 16/07/2021 07:47

The link that OP posted for 7News also shows a news item of 246 people dying from cucumbers. They sound way more dangerous than cats, dogs or badgers.

Mrstreehouse · 16/07/2021 07:49

@Bluetoybear the first two are exactly the same story! I think it’s a massive old wives tale and incredibly rare that it happens. Let’s not get started on dog attacks, which are not that rare and an extremely common occurrence. Not sure why you need to make it a cat verses dog scenario as you already know, most people, even cat owners have said it’s not your dogs fault.

RSPB Despite the large numbers of birds killed by cats in gardens, there is no clear scientific evidence that such mortality is causing bird populations to decline. This may be surprising, but many millions of birds die naturally every year, mainly through starvation, disease or other forms of predation. There is evidence that cats tend to take weak or sickly birds.

We also know that of the millions of baby birds hatched each year, most will die before they reach breeding age. This is also quite natural, and each pair needs only to rear two young that survive to breeding age to replace themselves and maintain the population.

It is likely that most of the birds killed by cats would have died anyway from other causes before the next breeding season, so cats are unlikely to have a major impact on populations. If their predation was additional to these other causes of mortality, this might have a serious impact on bird populations.

Sunbird24 · 16/07/2021 08:42

Evidence all points to Timmy not attacking the neighbours’ cat at all, and them just pulling a fast one to try and get OP to pay their vet bill from it having an eye infection!
No animals at fault in this scenario, only CF people.

Veterinari · 16/07/2021 09:00

Research has shown that dachshunds and chihuahuas are two of the breeds most likely to show unprovoked aggression to humans.

Does that mean dachshunds are savage killers - no. But can they bite or be snappy, yes absolutely.
Are they originally hunting dogs - yes and they will have retained some prey drive despite the extreme breeding that gives them their current problematic conformation and multiple health problems.
Does that mean the OP's dog is savage? No of course not.

Are the neighbours being pricks - yes it sounds like it. Does that mean all cats should be slandered as baby-killers? No - it's irrelevant whataboutery

I'm not really sure what the point of this seconds thread is?

The cat is fine, the dog is fine. It just seems to be an excuse to get goady.

ChainJane · 16/07/2021 09:26

I was with the OP until she started posting bollocks about cats killing people. Looking at those links, from reputable sources like The Sun, the common denominator is that the parent was not paying enough attention. The list of "killer cats" is ridiculous, sure a cat can have a disease (as with ALL animals) but someone getting run over because they tried to rescue a cat is hardly evidence of cats being killers.

Bluetoybear · 16/07/2021 10:05

I just posted links to 'the bollocks about cats' just to show people that you can Google anything and find 'facts' that show anything in a bad light!! Even as a pp said even cucumbers can kill you! I have been told on here my little dog needs putting down etc! Also I have had a couple of private messages on here telling me thatSad Anyway I now know my dog didn't do anything to the cat apart from chase it out of our garden after all, and next door neighbour was just trying it on!

No one on this thread has suggested your dog should be put down

I'd suggest if this issue is upsetting you and causing unwarranted abuse then disengage rather than starting new threads. You know what your dog is really like.

Yes you can google anything but it's not especially relevant or helpful to get into tit for tats. I'm sure your dog is lovely but that doesn't mean that dachshunds as a breed don't have issues - discussing those isn't a personal criticism of you or your dog.

I think there might be some confusion caused by two posters with similar names. The original thread had a NeonDisco who accused the OP of not training her dog and robustly defending the cat, so I think some anti-cat comments might be getting mistakenly directed towards you, NeonDreams.

I agree - I don't believe the smothering stories either.

I think it's possible a cat has jumped into a nice snug cot where a poor baby has already died os SIDS, or even (heaven forbid, but these things happen) and unwanted infant has been smothered by parents and the cat blamed.

The Indian one, where a baby was actually bleeding - I don't know . . maybe, if it was a starving feral cat, and perhaps the baby had possetted. The cat could have jumped in for the posset and perhaps hurt the infant - perhaps coinciding with a not-very-strong baby. Who knows.

But I don't believe that cats smother babies or (as me great-grannie used to insist), "catch their breath" and suck the air out of their lungs - and I will believe almost any evil of a cat (I have two - I know what the buggers are like)..

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/07/2021 15:43

@NeonDreams

The baby died of cot death, the cat was grieving and protecting it's family. You found ZERO evidence other than a false tabloid report. All that googling and you found 1 (one) example that wasn't even the cat. You failed.

I've changed my mind. You deserve everything you get. No one ever once attacked your dog or suggested it be put down. Everyone, everyone was on your side! So wtf was with your ignorant lashing out at cats, right out of the blue? YOU started attacking cats right out of the blue. It just proves to me how nasty and hateful dog owners can be. I hope your neighbour makes you miserable. Another thread where the OP shows themselves up to be an arsehole.

Oh - for heavens' sake!

You aren't coming out of this smelling of roses yourself Neon.

Just let it drop!

Whilst I appreciate that cats reading this thread may get miffed at the accusations Hmm

I'm not sure that massive sweeping statements against all dog owners, name calling or personally attacking the OP are remotely warranted.

Get a grip

Bath and hateful?! Two words I'd use for you outburst here rather than at the OP. You've just wished misery on a complete stranger via some gigantic over reaction on your part. I don't see any of that kind of thing from the OP about cats. Get over yourself!
