@Bluetoybear the first two are exactly the same story! I think it’s a massive old wives tale and incredibly rare that it happens. Let’s not get started on dog attacks, which are not that rare and an extremely common occurrence. Not sure why you need to make it a cat verses dog scenario as you already know, most people, even cat owners have said it’s not your dogs fault.
I agree - I don't believe the smothering stories either.
I think it's possible a cat has jumped into a nice snug cot where a poor baby has already died os SIDS, or even (heaven forbid, but these things happen) and unwanted infant has been smothered by parents and the cat blamed.
The Indian one, where a baby was actually bleeding - I don't know . . maybe, if it was a starving feral cat, and perhaps the baby had possetted. The cat could have jumped in for the posset and perhaps hurt the infant - perhaps coinciding with a not-very-strong baby. Who knows.
But I don't believe that cats smother babies or (as me great-grannie used to insist), "catch their breath" and suck the air out of their lungs - and I will believe almost any evil of a cat (I have two - I know what the buggers are like)..
