To take an iPad to a Nice Meal on Sunday?

EngSun · 09/07/2021 19:01

Football related, obviously.

We've got a very fancy day planned on sunday.

It's not changeable.

We will most likely be eating at kick off time, not quite sure of timings.

Even it we're not eating at that time, we're at the table till 9.30.

Wibu to take some means of watching the game?

I'm sure many of the other people in the room will have some means of following the game, so it would be impossible to hide from any scoring. I think it'd be impossible to just record it and watch it at home at 10.30ish.

We'll be discreet as possible, and obviously not the only people at the meal interested.

Wibu?

If you are hosting, your guests are keen to see it & rest of diners are doing likewise, then fine. So bring it & check the vibe on the day. Is the special occasion for 2 of your party, their special occasion or yours? If it is theirs & the trip is their treat/gift to celebrate...then I'd leave the decision about the screen up to them though.

If rest of diners are just dining like normal, then I wouldn't be inclined to whip out the screen. And if you were a guest of the others, which I see you are not...but if you were, no way would I even suggest it as I would think it extremely rude.

Mamajunebugjones · 09/07/2021 20:55

I wouldn’t be surprised if the atmosphere/ ambiance of the experience is fundamentally affected by the match being on- but not in a bad way- and because people appreciate that the match is important for a lot of people.
Perhaps you could feedback to us?

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2021 20:57

Just watch it, if the volume is off you’re not disturbing anyone and you can do as you please. Enjoy.

Dentistlakes · 09/07/2021 20:57

It would be extremely rude if there are other passengers who are nearby and who have presumably paid for the experience. If someone was to watch football on an iPad in an expensive restaurant whilst I was eating, I would request they be asked to stop or asked to leave. If you would rather watch the football then cancel and stay at home.

Couldhavebeenme2 · 09/07/2021 20:57

It's the flying Scotsmen isn't it op? Exceptionally unreasonable.

I get it, I really do. But there will be people me and my family on that train that don't give a shit about the football, and have paid a FUCKTONNE for an exceptional once in a lifetime experience with family that really won't be around for more than another few months. If you spoil their my day with your football celebrations or misery on the next table/same carriage please be prepared to be offloaded at York, or your ipad retrieved trackside.

Jk987 · 09/07/2021 20:58

It's probably a once in a lifetime match! It's so exciting! I would not want to miss it and I bet most people round the table will be desperate to see it too.

Ignore the stuffy, patronising people who tell you otherwise. Have fun and enjoy!

Bluntness100 · 09/07/2021 20:59

@mindutopia

If I paid a lot of money for a meal that had been booked nearly a year and the adults at the table next to me were glued to their iPad like a 5 year old in Pizza Express, I’d be pretty pissed off. Just check the score on your phone or re-schedule.
Really! Why do you remotely give a shit what others are doing if they don’t disturb you, focus on your own table and not anyone else’s. I’d be mighty pissed if someone at the next table was sitting watching me instead of getting on with their own stuff.
SoapboxFox · 09/07/2021 20:59

If I was nearby, I would be irritated by someone else's distracting screen on a trip like that. Also unless you are watching the match fully you would most likely miss the goals and other interesting moments, so it seems pointless just half watching.

HeronLanyon · 09/07/2021 21:00

Get a 4 way headphone splitter or use wifi ear buds and prop the iPad up maybe somewhere other diners won’t see. As it’s a train meal (who knew) I kind of think it is less objectionable than a restaurant setting. The four of you will have to decide what to do when (yes when!) we score. Good luck and have fun.

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2021 21:01

Depends how visible the screen was

This. You're being so rude to your guests and to those around you. If you're that desperate to watch England lose just cancel so someone else can enjoy the experience instead.

@Itsprobablynotcominghome

Take a portable projector. Full kit, plus shin pads. If you can get your hands on some air horns? Maybe fireworks for the final whistle?
Vuvuzelas? Grin

I agree. I hope you have a lovely time which isn’t ruined by inconsiderate twats who think their need to watch a bloody game trumps the right of all the other passengers to enjoy the experience they have paid a huge amount of money for. There’s a time and a place for football this isn’t it.
RovenderKitt · 09/07/2021 21:04

Other people will definitely be watching, op. I’ve been on a business dinner with a supplier before on a big Champions League night and was delighted when he whipped his phone out to check the score, once we had established we were both itching to find out what was happening the phone stayed on the table 😆 . It’s the England mens team’s biggest night in 55 years, people are going to want to know

It's my SomethingZero birthday.

Abd my friend's.

So I'm treating us as a 4 to celebrate.

The only problem I see is that the Wi-fi or phone signal may not be good enough for streaming. I have no idea, maybe those that watch tv on a train would know if you know anyone that does.

Yes I'm hoping it might be some common cohesive experience for a good propagation of people on the train.

But also not intrusive on those who are not fans.

It's going to be a fine balance, I think, thars why reading the vibe of the day will be essential.

Orient Express? No.

Agree completely - not sure I would even look at other tables. Would hope the diners on my table were interesting enough for me!

sonjadog · 09/07/2021 21:07

It won't be enough to have sound off. There will be people there who are planning to watch it on catch up and you will ruin it for them if they see the screen, hear you discuss any play, make any expression of joy or disappointment. Have you never watched someone watching sport on a train before with ear-plugs in? It is really obvious when things are going well or badly for the team they support. All four of you will need to be stellar actors to pull it off.

I would leave the ipad at home and enjoy conversation with your friends over dinner, rather than all staring silently into an ipad screen while avoiding any expression or comment to give the score away. Or else risk ruining both the dinner and the game for everyone eating around you, which would be a real selfish arsehole thing to do.

GrandmasCat · 09/07/2021 21:08

I bet your friends are having the same conversation at home 😁

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2021 21:09

A screen is distracting. If it’s hidden away fine but if you have it up it will be harder for people not to glance

It would irritate me

3Britnee · 09/07/2021 21:09

Is it the Pullman Express or whatever it is?

Aren't tickets for that at least 650 each?

I wouldn't be taking an ipad to that.

And I'd be pissed off if I was on an adjoining table.

At my brothers wedding a few years ago, there was a big rugby match on.
It was obvious 4 guests were listening -during service.
After the service but before the meal (Same venue) the guests got out an ipad and watched.
It was rude and disrespectful and all the guests commented disaproovingly.
It is rude, regardless of event tbh
