to be in tears because we've had to cancel our holiday?

Due to go to a lovely rental house in St Ives on Saturday, much anticipated, DC were both bringing friends. One DC tested positive this morning so we have to cancel.
Had a Tesco order set up there, had made and frozen food to take, and even a couple of restaurant bookings in place. Feel so gutted to miss out.

What a lovely idea @mrssmiling

I give you also thecornishpastystore.co.uk/ (pick your own pasty bakers - no bias on the suppliers there!) and some live music - sadly not live-live till the 20th but Cornish folk music from Davey&Dyer www.facebook.com/DaveyDyerDuo

Have a virtual weekend away!

Elphame · 07/07/2021 15:49
@grannycake - Thanks! I do think we might explore October half term. We won't have older DC in the country but might perhaps get another family to come with us.
That's always a REALLY popular week - if you want to move it to then do it sooner rather than later. I've been booked for that week for months now.

Such a shame, I'm glad you're not with a certain large company as you'd have a fight on your hands to rearrange .

lllllllllll · 07/07/2021 15:53

I'm so sorry OP, that is awful. I had to cancel a holiday once and cried for days! It's so hard when you've been really looking forward to something for ages.

ladygindiva · 07/07/2021 15:56

hugs to you op. And yabu; I cried for several days ( on and off) last year as our first holiday in 5 years (!!!) was booked for 23rd March; the day lockdown was announced. It's so disappointing.

ladygindiva · 07/07/2021 15:56

aaargh I mean YANBU ; definitely NOT being unreasonable!

osbertthesyrianhamster · 07/07/2021 16:00

@fiftiesmum

I wonder how many people will just not test because of this unless you are specifically told by government to do so
I don't test no matter what the government says. I'd only test if ill (and to go abroad and those are PCRs, LFTs are unreliable).
StayAGhost · 07/07/2021 16:11

YANBU

We had our holiday cancelled right at the beginning of lockdown
So kids 15, 13 and 11

Not been able to go this year (for obvious events reasons)

Next year looking increasingly unlikely due to post Covid finances

It really does look like that was our last chance at a proper family holiday :(

YADNBU OP

PeacheyPeach · 07/07/2021 16:12

YANBU its so disappointing but try and think that if the weather is grim like the other posters have said you might have had a real wet rubbish holiday and you might have felt really down while your away. Whereas you might be able to book a bit further down the line and it's something to look forward to and you will get the weather

Jessica60 · 07/07/2021 16:38

Yes exactly. The whole house has to isolate.

LondonJax · 07/07/2021 16:44

Fingers crossed the PCR tests come back negative. I work in a school and we've had 10 cases of LFT showing positive (with the close contacts then having to isolate). Two came back with PCR positives, the other eight returned a negative so came back to school.

warmfluffytowels · 07/07/2021 16:45

YANBU at all, that is monumentally shit!

But I would try and do a staycation in the house, if possible. Takeaways from your favourite places, cocktails or nice tapas in the garden, a lovely family BBQ, lots of lie-ins and lazy afternoons in the sun reading and chilling out.

Make it as special as possible and try not to get sucked into the idea of doing practical stuff or DIY just because you're off work!

I hope your DC doesn't get unwell and that you all manage to have a lovely week even if the circumstances are shit :)

LaMadrilena · 07/07/2021 16:48

It's awful OP. My brother and his family were supposed to come to Spain to visit this week to meet their new niece/cousin, but the flights have been cancelled. I cried too. I haven't seen any of my family since Christmas 2019, and now I have a 5-week-old who won't be meeting her grandparents any time soon. She'll probably never meet her great-grandma. It's all just so sad.

bigbluebus · 07/07/2021 16:51

My DB is in the same situation although he was going for 2 weeks to Scotland. Holiday rolled over from last year. His youngest (student) DS tested positive and they've all had to isolate and cancel the holiday.
We have just returned from a week away and were dreading anyone testing positive in the run up to the holiday (3 couples so quite a high chance).

Brazilianut · 07/07/2021 16:55

That’s awful sorry OP, anyone would feel the same Flowers

osbertthesyrianhamster · 07/07/2021 16:55

@LondonJax

The LFTs are very unreliable.
Blossomtoes · 07/07/2021 17:01

It’s a bugger. I really feel for you. Hopefully you’ll be able to bag a cancellation. 💐

clareykb · 07/07/2021 17:02

It is gutting, we have just had to do the same. Hadn't told kids we were going as was worried about this happening but still feel sad.

KaleJuicer · 07/07/2021 17:36

Good for you for following the rules. A great number of people would have still just gone and kept a distance from others and self catered or got deliveries. And a fair number would have just gone and done as they pleased.

Hoping the LFT is a false positive and the PCR negative for you

WellWoman · 07/07/2021 17:44

@clareykb - must have been a huge weight on you and your DP not to share with the DC. My heart goes out to you.

And to all of you who've had to miss/cancel/postpone these special meetings, treats and breaks.

I take a crumb of comfort in "doing the right thing". And from the fact that so many of you have also had to experience this. I don't mean this in a schadenfreude sense - more that it's actually sort of heartwarming that we can act sensibly as individuals to protest our broader community. Even if it hurts.

DarceyDashwood · 07/07/2021 17:46

Oh that’s absolutely rotten luck. I’d be bawling too. Have a good cry and hopefully tomorrow you won’t feel as down about it. Flowers

CruCru · 07/07/2021 18:02

@mytwocats

whatever happens, happens, fact of life sadly it's the truth,it hurts, but who would book a trip away at this moment, like I wrote, gamble & lost
Realistically the OP will have booked this months ago - as no one can go abroad, all the UK holiday places are really booked up. I don’t think this counts as a “gamble”.

I’m really sorry to hear that, OP. I hope you manage to have a nice break when you can go.

Cam2020 · 07/07/2021 18:40

Aw, of course youre not Flowers

Terhou · 07/07/2021 18:57

Goodness, I sympathise. St Ives is my favourite place in the UK and in your shoes I'd be absolutely gutted.

I'd suggest you book an alternative ASAP, and if one of your children can't make it, so be it. At least it will give you something to look forward to.

Madcats · 07/07/2021 21:01

We were hoping to stay v near St Ives (it was in the news a bit recently) in March 2020, then November 2020, then March 2021...maybe March 2022...)

I suspect that there will be 100's of last minute "availability" places this summer. Covid is ripping through my tourist city.

How flexible is your work?

I hope your PCR tests let you go away

areoplanecakerake · 07/07/2021 21:17

So was it only a lateral flow ? They are often false positives. Ha the same at school and the PCRs were clear. Has your DS any symptoms?
