to be in tears because we've had to cancel our holiday?

Due to go to a lovely rental house in St Ives on Saturday, much anticipated, DC were both bringing friends. One DC tested positive this morning so we have to cancel.
Had a Tesco order set up there, had made and frozen food to take, and even a couple of restaurant bookings in place. Feel so gutted to miss out.

The DC who tested positive is 17? Have you considered just going without them, assuming they're not actually ill?

Ouch. That would not be nice.

Plus aren't peopel suppose to stay put in tese cases?

MrsMariaReynolds · 07/07/2021 15:01

Aweee, that is disappointing Op. You have my sympathy.

What if they got really ill once the rest of the family were off having a jolly?!

The whole family has to isolate in case they've got it too.

WellWoman · 07/07/2021 15:01

Just popped back to say thanks again for such a lovely lot of sympathetic messages. I felt guilty about feeling upset - now I feel ok about it.

We all went for PCRs this morning. I would be amazed if they come back negative, but Maremaremare gives me a tiny ray of hope....

And to other posters, yes I will definitely tell the lettings company to call me night or day if they have a cancellation. They have been lovely to deal with since I first made the booking so I get the sense they'll be as helpful as they can be.

If it's self contained and no one is actually properly poorly, why not go? You have a tesco delivery and can go for walks away from others. Don't take the friends.

In a months time you'd be able to do this legally anyway.

doorornottodoor · 07/07/2021 15:02

@TheOccupier not the OP but my 16 year old currently has Covid and he really feels pretty dreadful with it. Not breathing issues but hot and cold and very weak. No way would I leave him to go off and have a holiday. Shock

TheOccupier · 07/07/2021 15:03

I know it sounds really mean, and I don't know what the rules are so this is assuming it would be allowed. But when I read the OP I thought it was about a much younger child. A 17yo who isn't actually ill might not mind being left at home with a full fridge and Netflix! Could always go for a shorter time if you don't want to leave them for the full week.

Melitza · 07/07/2021 15:03

@MrsRussell

OP, I'm just outside Truro and the weather is shite. It's not even raining consistently, it's up and down like a bride's nightie, it's dark by about half past eight, it's too bloody cold to go in the sea and everything's soaking. Come back in October. And tell the DC they're not currently missing owt and not to feel bad.
I love your turn of phrase.

If it’s any help to any pp’s I’m in SW France and the weather is shit and has been for 2 weeks. My swimming pool has been open 5 weeks and I’ve used it 4 times.
It was thundering earlier.

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 07/07/2021 15:04

Ah that’s rubbish OP. YANBU at all.

Madcats · 07/07/2021 15:10

That is SUCH bad luck. I hope it is just a mild case and the rest of you stay well too.

We're hoping to go on holiday in 10 days' time and I am just keeping my fingers crossed that DD's school can get through the next week without (too m)any getting ill. Loads of places are having to shut round here and entire schools are closed.

TheOccupier · 07/07/2021 15:11

That's totally different @doorornottodoor - I wouldn't leave a family member who was ill regardless of their age! But a lot of young people are testing positive with no symptoms at all and it sounds like that's what's happened in the OP's case.

Abetes · 07/07/2021 15:18

Surely he can't be left. If there is a definite positive case in the house, the whole household has to isolate?

Sparrowsong · 07/07/2021 15:24

We’re in n. Cornwall and the weather is bad now (16c, raining, grey and foggy) and all next week! If it helps, you won’t be missing too much.

Sorry but you can't do that, assuming they live together then the other family class as close contact and have to isolate.

The fact they don't feel ill at this point is irrelevant.

Shame because as PP have pointed out this could be different in a months time.

This.
BreathingDeep · 07/07/2021 15:30

Oh OP, I feel for you. We're off to St Ives on Friday and I had the call yesterday to say DD's class had a positive case of Covid... Luckily, DD wasn't one of the children classed as 'close contact' so we've been given the thumbs up to still go, but it was horrendous knowing we could lose the holiday and all the costs too.

Hopefully you can go at a later date and have a wonderful time - we struggled to find any availability for restaurants etc as its so busy, so maybe it'll be calmer and quieter when you're able to go?

I so hope you're able to have a decent time next week, and if it makes you feel better, I can send you pictures of it raining and pictures of my children falling out?

fiftiesmum · 07/07/2021 15:33

I wonder how many people will just not test because of this unless you are specifically told by government to do so

LJC1234 · 07/07/2021 15:35

I'm so sorry! It's totally fine to be upset! Holidays are important ! Get yourself plenty of treats on your weekly shop 😊

mrssmiling · 07/07/2021 15:36

I really sympathise - what bad luck. St Ives is so lovely, and watching the waves on the Porthmeor webcam has been a pleasure during lockdown! I agree that staying home is the right thing to do.
As slight consolation, I’d be tempted to order a case of cider
www.cornishorchards.co.uk/ order a Porthminster Cafe cookbook for some cooking inspiration www.porthminstercafe.co.uk/product/porthminster-cookbook/
and order these for all the family!

Oh, and buy lots of scones, clotted cream and jam! 😀

Grenlei · 07/07/2021 15:40

I'd wait and see what the PCR test says, lateral flow are unreliable.

We recently went away, one of our group had a positive LF test (followed by 2 negatives), PCR test was negative. So thankfully we were all able to go.

mrssmiling · 07/07/2021 15:41

And St Ives is lovely throughout the year - you will have a great time whenever you book again. 😀

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 07/07/2021 15:41

It is gutting and I really feel for you. However, in the scheme of things, and you've mentioned it yourself.....perspective

MikeHat · 07/07/2021 15:43

We have booked/ stayed in some large luxury self catered places. I follow the companies on social media and at least once a week they are posting about last minute cancellations. I'm guessing people in your situation. Could you get them to ring you if they get anything suitable?

WellWoman · 07/07/2021 15:45

@mrssmiling - great ideas, thanks!

Thanks also for all the creative ideas about how we might still go - unfortunately the regulations are clear about staying at home and self isolating, although it is tempting to try to find a more helpful interpretation.

I did buy some books to read on holiday so I hope I can carve out time to read next week.
