to be in tears because we've had to cancel our holiday?

Due to go to a lovely rental house in St Ives on Saturday, much anticipated, DC were both bringing friends. One DC tested positive this morning so we have to cancel.
Had a Tesco order set up there, had made and frozen food to take, and even a couple of restaurant bookings in place. Feel so gutted to miss out.

OP I would contact the company and ask them to get in touch with any cancellations as there might be other people in your situation in the next month or so.

WellWoman · 07/07/2021 14:10

@MrsRussell - that's very helpful! thank you

Perhaps ask them to contact you if there are any other last minute cancellations this summer. It seems likely there would be and maybe you could use that week?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/07/2021 14:11

@mytwocats that’s not very sympathetic!

Brookes99 · 07/07/2021 14:14

Aw, that is really bad luck, and I would be very upset (or pissed off maybe) in that situation! Perhaps you can try and have a vacation at home? See if you can hire a hot tub for a few days. Rent some just out movies on the telly. Order in some fancy food a couple of nights. Enough to make things a bit different and feel like you've all had a good stay home break!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/07/2021 14:15

@mytwocats

you went full throttle on the premise that all would be ok,sadly as for millions of others,it all went horribly wrong you gambled & lost, you'll get over it in time.
You can't really go half throttle. "Can I half book holls, pls?"

Fucking hell. We just had a trip canceled to vistit family (after number of deaths this past year including a parent) and even I am more sympathetic to OP.

mrsdolittle · 07/07/2021 14:15

I am so sorry OP. I absolutely feel your pain. I think we have all been pinning so much on holidays this summer that it is devastating when it goes tits up.

We are potentially in the same boat. DS tested positive yesterday and we are supposed to be going on holiday next Saturday. Our self isolation ends the day before but I'm not getting my hopes up - obviously if DH get symptoms it's game over.

I hope your DC is ok. Mine is actually really quite poorly - they've been saying it's a mild disease in young people but I've rarely known him to be so ill.

Sending you hugs, Thanks and Winexx

Poor you. Flowers

Juniper74 · 07/07/2021 14:19

Yanbu. How gutting. I would be really upset too.
Really hope you get to go away another time.

Maremaremare · 07/07/2021 14:21

if it was just a lateral flow test I would get a PCR test as I know someone who tested positive on two lateral flow tests in a row, then went for a PCR which came back negative

mytwocats · 07/07/2021 14:21

whatever happens, happens, fact of life sadly it's the truth,it hurts, but who would book a trip away at this moment, like I wrote, gamble & lost

ThursdayWeld · 07/07/2021 14:21

Can your family not go, without friends, and your DC self-isolate there?

DanceToTheMusicInMyHead · 07/07/2021 14:21

We had the same at half term- DH tested positive and had to cancel the holiday. Must admit I had a very very glum first day and cried a couple of times- really needed that holiday! What helped me was then refocusing on how to use the time positively. For me, I focused on making our garden nice- properly tidied it, weeded, jet washed patio, repainted fence, garden centre delivery and finally ordered the patio furniture I had been dithering over. It gave me something to do to feel a little less glum, made the rest of isolation better (I isolated for bloody ages because tested positive a week later) and actually has had a long term benefit. Still would have preferred my holiday though... Flowers OP!

I've just been away two weeks ago (england only). Millions of people are booking... And going...
tara66 · 07/07/2021 14:22

Would you do another test? Someone who had to travel from France did 3 tests - some were positive -some, perhaps one - was not. She used the negative test to travel. she said they weren't accurate there.

Hont1986 · 07/07/2021 14:23

Can't the 17 year old stay at home while the rest of you go?

BastardMonkfish · 07/07/2021 14:23

Sorry OP Thanks hope DC doesn't feel too poorly. Not their fault at all - viruses gonna virus!

Babyroobs · 07/07/2021 14:25

How awful for you. We are booked to go to Cornwall in two weeks time, currently isolating due to eldest ds having covid. just desperately praying no-one else in the household comes down with it before we go ( we are a largish family ).

TonytheDog · 07/07/2021 14:25

That's shit, I'm sorry. Lots of other people will be in the same situation throughout the summer - if you can afford to pay for a new holiday and 'bank' the existing/cancelled one - it might be worth contacting as many holiday companies as possible to ask for any cancellation notifications from 2 weeks, by which time, hopefully, your DC will be well and Covid free. Classic Cottages cover Cornwall and Devon and very often have last minute places available.

Crunchymum · 07/07/2021 14:27

I'd be gutted too.

Thankfully we made our holiday (went in May / June half term) but I spent the days leading up to in a panic something would go wrong.

I hope you manage to get something else booked for later another time.

It is so shit.

motogogo · 07/07/2021 14:28

How horrible! Have some GinGrin

In all seriousness it seems everyone with school age kids is isolating at the moment, we have banned our 20 somethings from being in close proximity with others because we need to be at work (own offices zero risk).

MargosKaftan · 07/07/2021 14:31

Do you have travel insurance ? Have you checked if they will refund you ?

Scaredycat87 · 07/07/2021 14:37

Would have gone and isolated there
Restaurants delivered

actiongirl1978 · 07/07/2021 14:45

That's awful OP we go on Friday and I'm holding my breath that we manage to get on the road. I made my boss sit 3m away from me for our very brief meeting this morning so I won't be track and traced.

doorornottodoor · 07/07/2021 14:51

Gutting. We’ve had to cancel three trips so far in the last few months. It’s such a kick in the teeth. Flowers
